OMSCO’s time-tempered, tough products arethe drillstring components of choice for toolpush-ers the world over. It’s been that way since the1930’s. It will be that way in the 21st century! Why?
Our dedication to QUALITY, TECHNOLOGY,AND CUSTOMER SERVICE has made OMSCOone of the most respected names in the drillingindustry. Our loyal customers know thatOMSCO offers drillstring components and acces-sories unmatched for reliability and performance. In today’s “faster, cheaper, deeper” drilling envi-ronment, the value of that performance translatesto LOWER COST PER FOOT.
QUALITY is more than just a word atOMSCO. Our tubular steel products aremachined from the highest quality steel availableand heat treated in our own custom-designedfacility, giving us an outstanding quality assur-ance capability. Our heat treat facility wasdesigned specifically for the treating of oil coun-try tubular goods and drillstring components.Nothing exceeds its accuracy, reliability and pre-cision. What’s more, this special heat treat capa-bility is augmented by one of the most compre-hensive in-house metallurgy laboratories in theindustry.
All of OMSCO’s products are manufacturedunder process controls that assure the highestdegree of accuracy and insure conformance toAPI specifications as well as established industrystandards. All welds are processed with state-of-the-art equipment and are 100% inspected using

blacklight magnetic particle inspection andultrasonic inspection techniques. Each kellyvalve is pressure tested to meet all API specifi-cations and to assure maximum reliability andlong life in the field.
OMSCO’s dedication to quality is furtherdemonstrated through our traceability programfor all products.
OMSCO leads the pack in product andmanufacturing TECHNOLOGY. In 1947, weintroduced the most dependable upper kellyvalve ever. Our simple, successful designestablished the standard of the industry.
Later, OMSCO pioneered a unique trepan-ning system, ideal for the precision machiningof drill collars and kellys...a system whichremains unsurpassed today! The result?OMSCO drill collar and kelly bores are thestraightest, most uniform in the industry.
More recently, OMSCO developed MIR®
(Maximum Internal Radius) that dramaticallyreduced stress on drill pipe by increasing theradius at the junction of the I.D. and the transi-tion area. Less stress means longer drill pipelife!
Finally, unsurpassed CUSTOMER SERVICEhas always been the central part of OMSCO’sbusiness philosophy. Each employee, whetherin manufacturing or service after the sale, understands that the most important element ofour business is you! Drill Pipe is the primary, and most important,
drillstring member, since it has the most influence on
reducing the total cost per foot. OMSCO has always
been a quality leader in the manufacture of drill pipe.
We have been an API licensee for rotary-shouldered
connections longer than any other drill pipe assembly
manufacturer. OMSCO is ISO 9001 certified under
both the Dutch and British schemes.
OMSCO offers you a complete drill string prod-
uct line including a full range of jointed drill pipe
from from 2-3/8” to 6-5/8”. All standard API grades
(E,X,G,S,) and specialty grades meet sour service
requirements and are quickly available. This includes
Range II and Range III pipe with the appropriate
upset.
As a standard, OMSCO offers our patented MIR®
(Maximum Internal Radius) upset with a longer tran-
sition which reduces maximum pipe stress (20% over
API designs). To achieve more consistent heat treat
for better life, the pipe upset is machined––ID, OD
and end faced––prior to heat treating. OMSCO’s sin-
gle pass upsetting eliminates stress cracks and ele-
phant hide created by multiple heats. We offer the
most advanced state-of-the-art EMI inspection to
insure quality products. OMSCO’s 100% Charpy
testing at -20°C, exceeding API specifications which
require only ambient testing. Our unique higher
molybdenum steel provides superior wear character-
istics, assures you that you are receiving the “tough-
est” pipe available thus increasing drill pipe life and
reducing your drilling cost per foot.
OMSCO meets the most stringent world specifi-
cations including Shell SQAIR, Alberta Recommend-
ed Practices (ARP) specifications as well as all rele-
vant API specs.

A great deal of conversation and specificationshave been devoted to drill pipe “Miu lengths”. Verylittle attention has been given to the radius at thejunction between the drill pipe I.D. and the transi-tion area.
OMSCO asks, “Why not have the whole lengthof the transition be one continuous radius?” This isexactly what you get with the new OMSCO MIR®
UPSET.
Extensive research and development has shownthat the length of the Miu, coupled with theMaximum Internal Radius (MIR®) will provide theuser with the maximum possible fatigue life for drill
Compare Omsco’s MIR® with traditional upset radius for stress factors.
pipe. OMSCO’s extensive finite element analysis, manufacturing, engineering and product testing haveshown that the larger the radius at the transition, thelower the stress on the inside diameter of the pipe.In fact, it might surprise you to know that this largeradius transition lowers the stress in bending of theoutside diameter of the pipe also.
These lower stresses translate into longer pipelife which means lower dollars per foot of holedrilled! Isn’t this what we are really after? TheOMSCO MIR® UPSET comes standard on all yourdrill pipe in 4”, 14.00 lbs./ft. and larger sizes.
The two Finite Element Plots above (5”, 19.50 lb./ft.IEU) dramatically display the stress reduction in theupset due to the MIR Upset. Figure 1 shows thegeometry and stress levels of the OMSCO 7” longupset with full radius. The maximum stress level inthe I.D. of this upset is 33,068 psi. Figure 2 is a
comparable display of a traditional “long Miu” upset4-1/2” long with a 1-1/2” radius. The maximumstress level in this upset I.D. is 39,723 psi. The MIRupset wins again by over 20%. (Both models loadedto give 2-3/8” deflection at 120”. Equivalent to 33degree/100 ft. dogleg.)
Figure 3 shows theincreased life gainedwith the MIR upset.Note that the fatiguelife more than doublesthat of other acceptabletransition designs priorto failure initiatingfrom the internal upsetsurface.

Primary External Rotary (torque)Shoulder
ThreadsInterchangeable With API
SecondaryInternal TorqueShoulder
Recent technological developments in the drillingof oil and gas wells have resulted in a significantincrease in the application of extended reach and hori-zontal drilling and in overall footage drilled per well, particularly offshore. These shorter radius and deeperwells require the use of drill pipe that has higher tor-sional yield strength and greater torque capacity tooljoints than is afforded by standard API connections. In fact, high grade drill pipe (e.g. S135) often has pipetorsional yield strength that is significantly greaterthan the torsional yield strength of the API threadedconnections. This sometimes results in tool joint fail-ure if the connection is subjected to the higher torqueloads found in deeper, more deviated wells.
OMSCO’s TuffTorq TM rotary shouldered tool jointconnection offers a high-performance alternative to astandard API connection where higher makeup torqueis required. The TuffTorq connection is a double-shouldered design where the primary external shoulderis the sealing surface and a secondary internal shoul-der acts as an additional friction surface and stop. Thus, additional torque capacity is added to the con-nection. The TuffTorq connection is also interchange-able with standard API connections, which enables thedriller to utilize standard accessories as well as con-ventional API drill pipe.
The OMSCO TuffTorq connection is also recom-mended for sour well drilling due to minimal hoopstress in the box and lower tensile stress in the pin.

Directional-Wate®
Directional-Wate® is a patented product designed byOMSCO especially for the following applications:
• Weight member in directional holes• Curved section of horizontal holes• Transition member in vertical holes
The design employs many of the same features asour Heavy-Weight Drill Pipe. All sizes are manufac-tured by friction (inertia) welding tool joints on eachend of a specially manufactured heavy wall tube. Thetube section has an enlarged center section which hasthree spiral grooves, each decreasing in depth as theyreach the midpoint of the tube. This causes the tubeto be more flexible toward the ends and more rigid inthe center. This unique design provides the followingadvantages:
Advantages/Features• Heavier - more weight per joint• Full diameter center providing:
––Better “bearing surface”––Better wear resistance (more wear area)
The no-wall stick design reduces the chances of differential sticking, mimimizes tubewear, and provides more uniform bending through the length of the tube.

The OMSCO precision machined kelly is thefinest, most consistent quality kelly in the industry. Most machining operations are accomplished onequipment designed specifically and only for kellymanufacture.
Straightness is the key to OMSCO’s manufactur-ing process. Straightness is checked before, duringand after each machining operation. Kellys are roughturned, straightened, bored with specially-designedtrepanning equipment, drifted, straightened again, fin-ish turned on specially designed full length kelly turn-ing lathes, and straightened once again. Joints arethreaded on CNC equipment and phos-coated, and thekelly is straightened one more time. The next processis the critical milling operation. All milling is per-formed on specially designed, rigid kelly mills.Smooth radii are machined on both ends of each flat toassure the least possible stress concentration. The flatsare precision milled to API specifications. The kelly isstraightened once more prior to serializing, paintingand inserting in OMSCO’s standard kelly scabbard forshipping and storage.

In 1947, OMSCO set the standard by which all otherupper kelly valves have been judged. This dependable, proven flapper-type valve design has remained virtuallyunchanged and unchallenged over the years due to itssimplicity of operation and field-servicing ease.
Below the valve body a special threaded sub offerslong wear and easy replacement should lower threadsbecome damaged, and, when removed, allows easyaccess to the valve cavity for repair. The valve must bemanually closed. It can be partially opened by startingup the mud pumps, but must be fully opened manuallyto prevent mud cutting.
Features
• Proven flapper-type design for simple operation andeasy servicing
• Monel steel ram shafts to prevent corrosion and sticking
• Sealed lubrication packing• Complete stainless steel valve parts available
for H2S service• Available in 5,000; 10,000; and 15,000 psi.

The OMSCO lower kelly valve body is manufactured from 4145Hmodified fully heat treated alloy steel. This valve is a two piece designand is a positive opening, ball type valve. When installing the valve inthe drill string, the same amount of torque should be applied in the makeup of the valve as is used in making up tool joints.
By closing this valve before breaking a joint, you will save mud andkeep the drilling floor cleaner and free of excess mud. The heavy dutybody design enables the contractor to use this valve above and/or belowthe kelly.
The OMSCO lower kelly valve comes complete with a hex-typeoperating wrench and pressed steel thread protectors.
Features
• Self-lubricating, ball-type valve• Stainless steel ball and non-corrosive seat are standard• Two piece design with fewer replacement parts for easy, economical

OMSCO hardbanding increases tool jointlife and is applied prior to the tool joint beingwelded to the pipe body. It is applied undervery closely controlled conditions resulting in auniform, low porosity wear-resistant surface.
OMSCO hardbanding is available in eithera flush or raised configuration, using fine, stan-dard or large spherical tungsten carbide pellets. With the flush design (F-1000, F-3000 or F-5000), the tungsten carbide surface is flushwith or slightly above the tool joint surface. With the raised configuration (R-1000, R-3000or R-5000), the tungsten carbide surface israised to approximately 1/32” above the tooljoint surface.
OMSCO’s special hardbanding, “Super-Smooth” (Series 5000), is a non-abrasive hard-banding in which the tungsten carbide pelletsare buried below the joint surface and are cov-ered over with a layer of hard metal. This special hardbanding is recommended when casing wear is a problem.
OMSCO offers other “specialty” hardband-ing applications upon request such as ARNCO200XT, or ARMACOR–M.
