YSA Sailor of the Year.
During a recent committee meeting, representatives
from Yachting SA presented the 2014 Sailor of the Year
award to Peter Dunk (Sixth Element skipper). The
committee was honoured and delighted to witness the
acceptance of this prodigious award by the current
MCASA president. (Peter’s Facebook posting) Thank you to the SA Mosquito
association for putting my nomination in, especially Phillip
Pearce and Peter Hallsworth for doing it all. It’s a great
honour to be nominated by fellow sailors. Tops off the great
season we had last season. Thanks to Jaimee Broekers for dealing with all the sailing stuff,
Kirsten for being no1 crew; wouldn't have won nationals or states without her, and Kate Hyde for being an awesome
substitute crew for the Vic States win. (See following in MossieNet for the MCASA submission for Peter’s nomination.)
But wait, there’s more!!
Congratulations to Kirsten Thomas (Sixth Element crew) for being
nominated as a finalist in the 2015 Riverland Sportsperson of the Year for
her sailing and netball achievements.
Also to Peter Dunk (Sixth Element skipper) for not only being nominated
as a finalist, but also for being the
overall winner, and now holding the
title of 2015 Riverland Sportsperson of
the Year (amongst all his other
achievements).
Stalwart Lake Bonney YC member,
Dorothy Dunk was also a finalist in the
2015 Steve McFarlane Contribution to
Sport for all she has done for the Lake
Bonney Yacht Club.
We are being watched.
It was great to catch up with ‘Olde Mossie Salts’ Alec and Mary Stevens at the Wallaroo states. Alec is a life
member of MCASA and past owner of many a mossie, his last being Allan Pettman’s current boat, The
Ultimate. (Alec was proudly wearing the gold mossie tie-pin presented to him by the association in recognition
of his past dedication to the class.) He was excited to watch the racing, appreciating the quality and closeness
of the competition. He is very pleased with the strength of the class, the way it is being supported and
promoted, particularly in the country clubs.

Steve Thomas on his new boat Cat-titude
South Ossie with Mossie
States: Conducted at Wallaroo SC in November: Saturday had strong
winds with only 3 Mk1 boats venturing out to the start. All boats and crew
completed the three-lap race with some relief. Whilst waiting for the second
start, the RO cancelled any further racing and the subsequent shy reach into
shore was an exhilarating experience, putting smiles back onto all three faces!
Dinner Saturday evening in the new and expanded clubrooms was a most
enjoyable evening. WSC are justifiably proud of their recent upgrade, not to
mention the quality cuisine presented to the diners.
The wind abated over night as promised with rigging Sunday morning being a
relaxed atmosphere but filled with restless anticipation. The start was off-
shore so boats left the beach early allowing sufficient time to reach the
start area by 10am. Whilst all boats gathered an ideal breeze saw
many crews exercising prestart warm-ups. But the
breeze was fading and by start time, all crews were gunwale
bumming. With Mk2 fleet starting first, all boats managed to
complete their two lap race along with Mk1 Cat-titude before the
wind collapsed. The remainder of the Mk1 fleet finished eventually
but, as it happened, well outside the 20 minute limit.
The race officials decided to tuck into their cucumber sandwiches and
pumpkin scones whilst the wind ‘boxed the compass’ with it
eventually settling into a SW sea breeze. Wind strength gradually
built during the afternoon topping out at ~18kts. What a difference fair,
consistent wind makes to the sailing. All crews
were ecstatic with the close, competitive racing
that resulted in a further three races being
completed before the 2pm close. As the Mk2
fleet had completed four heats on Sunday, they
had the minimum number of races for the
championship. Peter Dunk and Kirsten Thomas
were clear winners with 3 firsts.
With some Mk1s sailing Saturday, 5 races were
recorded so one could be a discard. There was
some confusion on the beach if any other boats
had finished that drifter. The fleet calculated
Mark Pfenning had the better score than Phillip Pearce.
Celebrations and congratulations took place on the beach during de-rigging and
continued in the club house during farewells.
But the official results told a different story!

Nationals: Season 2015 – 2016:
Competitors from South Australia are in their final stages of preparation for this season’s championships. All
participated in the States recently at Wallaroo and had a solid work-out in varying conditions. If you know a
club member who is travelling to Rye, wish them well for their week of sailing. If you are a participant, best of
luck from the SA association and may you all have fair winds.
Accommodation: several committee members are active in organising accommodation as the Rye district is
booked out years in advance. Greg Hackett (0428 292 315

Opening Day, Lake Bonney

Club Events:
Adelaide: Opening day was a beautiful day to be on the water. The fleet had its
usual sail-past-the-
officials course. Repeat
laps until told to stop.
What fun! Two
mossies gave polite
cheers to the
commodore as they
sailed past the official guests on
catamaran Temptation.
Pt. Vincent: On October 11 2015, over 100 sailors, invited guests,
members and family gathered to officially open our new clubhouse
extensions and open the sailing season. It was an incredible day on and
off the water for all involved. A very proud moment for the entire club.
Special thanks to Mark Pfenning The Matrix (LBYC) for reciprocating
and supporting our season’s opening.
Lake Bonney: LBYC held its opening regatta over the past long
weekend. The weekend was set off with the official season opened by
former long-time member and past Commodore Mervyn Dunk. Apart
from our local sailors, visitors came from as far as Mildura, Lake Boga,
Adelaide and Port Vincent.
Nineteen boats hit the water over the two day regatta for all five scheduled races. Conditions were perfect for
sailing and although the temperature was hot, the wind on both days averaged 15 knots gusting into the 20's
which caught out quite a few sailors over the weekend resulting in them testing the water temperatures.
There was a lot of close racing across the four divisions with several
finishes coming down to metres. Thanks to the 18 foot skiffs from
Adelaide, local monos, cats and visiting mosquitos.
Mosquitos:
1st- Bear Talk - Garry Johnstone (Lake Bogga)

Normanville: Opening day had 5 mosquitoes on the water: club boats Rebel without a Clew, Spot and Zapper, supported by visitors Both Barrels and
The Ultimate. Normanville continues to a popular location for the Mossies to sail. Although club facilities are minimal, visitors are
always made welcome by the regular members. Try Sunday sailing at Normanville.
