NortonCancerInstituteofficialsbrokegroundonanewdowntownradiationcenterJan.14.Thecenterwillbebuiltona1.1-acresiteat676S.FloydSt.andwillfeaturesomeofthemostsophisticatedtechnologiesavailableanywhereintheworldtotreatadultandpediatriccancersandtumors. “Ournewcenterwillbringtogethercomprehensive,personalizedcancerservicesinonelocationfortheconvenienceofourpatientsandtheirfamilies,”saidRobertN.Shaw,president,NortonCancerInstitute.“Mostimportant,eachpatientwillhaveanimprovedchanceoflivingabetter,longerlifeafteracancerdiagnosis.” The65,000-square-foot,three-storyfacilitywillfeatureafirst-floorradiationcenter,second-floormultidisciplinaryspecialtycentersandathirdfloorforfuturegrowthofcancer-relatedservices.Theradiationcenterwillofferfaster,moreprecise,morepowerfulradiationtherapyto

treatdeep-seatedtumorsmoreeffectivelywhilesparingsurroundinghealthytissue.Thecenter’snewpowerfulVarianlinearacceleratorwillincorporatetheNovalisTx®StereotacticRadiosurgerySystem. ServiceswillbedirectedbyAaronSpalding,M.D.,Ph.D.,afellowship-trainedradiationoncologistwhotreatsadultsandchildrenandwastrainedatSt.JudeChildren’sResearchHospitalbeforejoiningNortonCancerInstitute. “Sophisticatedradiationtherapyservicesareavitaltoolinthefightagainstcancer,”Dr.Spaldingsaid.“Ourabilitytobringthisleading-edgetechnologytoNortonHealthcare’sdowntowncampuswillhavealife-changingimpactforadultandpediatricpatientsandtheirfamilies.ItcomplementstheexistingsophisticatedradiationtherapyservicescurrentlyavailableontheNortonSuburbanHospitalcampus.” Thecenterwillbringtogetherregionalexpertsinneuro-oncology,neurosurgery,orthopaediconcology,radiationoncologyandbehavioraloncology.Inadditiontomedicalandradiationtreatment,thecenterwillhousecancerresearch,suchaspatientclinicaltrials,andeducationservices.ItisscheduledtoopenaroundJuly2011.

The Cancer Care and Renal Center atKosairChildren’sHospitalhasreceivedathree-yearaccreditationwithcommendationfromtheAmericanCollegeofSurgeons’CommissiononCancer.Theprogramhasbeenaccreditedsince1959–longerthananycancerprograminthecountry.

Combined Giving Campaign exceeds $1 million

ThankstothecommitmentandgenerosityofNortonHealthcareemployees,donationstothe2009CombinedGivingCampaigntoppedthe$1millionmarkforthefirsttimeinthecampaign’shistory.Employeedonationstotaled$1,018,779. “Ourorganizationhasalonghistoryofgivingtime,resourcesandservicetoourcommunity,”saidRussellF.Cox,executivevicepresidentandchiefoperatingofficer.“Demonstratingstewardshipofresourcesisoneofourorganizationalvalues,andstewardshipisoneofourPillarsofExcellence,whichhelpprovidetheframeworkforallwedo.Donatingtothecampaignisanexampleofemployeeslivingthesevalues.” ThroughtheannualCombinedGivingCampaign,employeeshelpsupporttheWHASCrusadeforChildren,MetroUnitedWay,FundfortheArts,Children’sHospitalFoundation,NortonHealthcareFoundationandKosairCharities.

NortonHealthcareemployeeshelpedprovidecountlessholidaymealstocommunitymembersinDecemberbydonating7,336poundsoffoodduringtheorganization’ssecondyeartopartnerwiththeDaretoCareFoodBank.Thiswas61percentmorefoodthanemployeesdonatedin2008. “Whentheprogramstarted,thefacilityServiceExcellenceteamswerejusttryingtooffsetsomeoftheneedcausedbytheeconomy’sdownturn,”saidChuckPatyk,systemmanager,ServiceExcellence.“DaretoCareexplainedthefoodpushreallydropsafterThanksgivingwhenthetoydrivesbegin,sowechosethetimebetweenThanksgivingandChristmastocontribute.” Hopingtosurpassthepreviousyear’s4,500poundsoffoodcollected,organizerssetagoalof6,000poundsforthe2009drive.EmployeesandmembersofthecommunitydroppedofftheirdonationsatDaretoCarecollectionboxesat30NortonHealthcarelocations,includingmanyofthephysicians’offices. RecipientsofDaretoCarefoodincludetheworkingpoorandolderresidentsof13countiesinKentuckyandSouthernIndiana;50percentofrecipientsarefamilieswithchildren. “Inatimewhentheeconomyisdown,itreallyshowsthecompassionandcaringofNortonHealthcare

Witharecentreportfinding60percentofAmericansusetheInternettoaccesshealthandwellnessinformation,thedecisionforNortonHealthcaretojoinpopularsocialmediaoutletslikeFacebook,TwitterandYouTubewasaneasyone. “Inearly2009westartedevaluatingemergingonlinecommunicationtoolsavailablewiththegoalofcreatinganopenstreamofcommunicationforpatientsandemployees,”saidGabeRiggs,eBusinessmarketingcoordinator. NortonHealthcareandKosairChildren’sHospitalnowhaveFacebookfanpagesthatdisseminateinformationaboutrelevanthealthissues,regionalandnationalhealthnews,andeventshappeningonthecampuses.TheChildren’sHospitalFoundationhasaFacebookcausepage,wheredonationscanbemadeandpeoplecanreadamazingstoriespatientsandotherspost.Andtherearegrouppagesforsuchtopicsascancersurvivors,weightmanagementandwomen’shealth. “Recently,thesepagesprovedtobeausefuloutletforgettingthewordoutaboutfluvaccineinformation,”Riggssaid.“Weneedtobringthemessagetoourpatientsandemployeesratherthanexpectingthemtocometous.”

DebbieHall,R.N.,andherdaughter,KristinPickerell,R.N.,sharethesamepassionforhealthcare.HallbeganworkingatNortonAudubonHospitalasasurgicalserviceseducatormorethansixyearsagoandworkedherwayuptodirectorofthedepartment.PickerellisanursemanagerintheneurologyintensivecareunitatNortonHospital,whereshe’sworkedsince2003. InJanuary2007,PickerellenrolledintheMasterofScienceinnursingprogramatBellarmineUniversityandconvincedhermothertodothesame.Thenursingadministrationmaster’sprogrampreparesprofessionalnursestofunctioninmanagementpositionsinavarietyofhealthcaresettings.Studentsfocusonfinancialandeconomicaspectsofhealthcare,humanresourcemanagementandorganizationalleadership.Selectedclinical,administrativeandresearchexperiencesprovidestudentswiththeopportunitytofunctionasnurseadministrators. “Iknewthatcompletingmymaster’sdegreewouldopenmoredoors,”Pickerellsaid.“Beingabletodoitwithmymotherdefinitelymadeitmorefun.Werodetogether,sattogetherandevenworkedonprojectstogether.” ThroughouttheirnearlythreeyearstogetheratBellarmineUniversity,thismotheranddaughterwereabletoattendallofthesameclasses. “Thebestpartofgoingbacktoschoolwasgoingwithmydaughter,”Hallsaid.“Mostmothersdon’thavethe

AfterservingasmedicaldirectorofNortonPsychiatricCentersince1983,JesseWright,M.D.,hassteppeddownfromthatpost.Butdon’tgettheideahe’sretiring.Thispracticingpsychiatrist,writerandlecturerisbusierthanever.Dr.WrightiscontinuinginhisroleasaprofessorandvicechairoftheDepartmentofPsychiatryandBehavioralSciencesattheUniversityofLouisville.HehastakenontheroleofdirectoroftheDepressionCenteratUofL,andheisintheprocessofwritinghiseighthbook. Dr.Wrightrecentlyreflectedonthemanychangesinthefieldofpsychiatrysincehebeganpracticingin1975. “Tremendousadvanceshavebeenmadeinunderstandingmentalillnesses,”hesaid.“Wehaveallkindsofnewtreatmentsthatofferadvancesoverwhatwehad30yearsagoandamuchbroaderpalateofdrugstotreatmentalillness.

“Whenpeoplecometomenowwithdepressionoranxietyorevenapsychoticillness,I’mveryoptimisticthatwecandoawholelottohelpthem.” Apioneerinthefieldofcognitive-behaviortherapy(CBT),Dr.Wrightwasinstrumentalindevelopingthefirstcomputerprogramusedtotreatpeoplewithdepression.AnotherofhisaccomplishmentswastheimplementationofCBTforinpatientsatNortonPsychiatricCenter.Inpatientspreviouslywerethoughttobetooseriouslyilltobenefitfromthetherapy. “IfeelgoodaboutallthethingswewereabletodototreatNortonHealthcare’spatients,”Dr.Wrightsaid.“Ihaveenjoyedworkingwiththereallyinspiredgroupofnurses,socialworkersandothermentalhealthprofessionalsthroughouttheNortonHealthcaresystem.Ittakesaspecialpersontoreachouttosomeonewho’sbeentraumatizedandtoseethatpersonasahumanbeingwithgreatpotential.Icouldtellthousandsofstoriesaboutthedifferencethesecaringemployeeshavemadetotheoutcomesforpeoplewhowereinreallydesperateshape.” TheRev.Dr.WilliamJ.Schultz,whohasservedontheNortonPsychiatricClinicCouncilformanyyears,wassadtoseeDr.Wrightstepdown. “Hehasbeenanexcellentleaderinthefieldofpsychiatry,”Schultzsaid.“Hehasabrilliantmindandexcellentcommunicationskills.He’sabletobreakitdownandmakeitunderstandableforalaypersonlikemyself.” Dr.WrightreceivedhismedicaldegreefromJeffersonMedicalCollegeinPhiladelphia.Becomingapsychiatristwasnotinhisoriginalplan,buthebecamefascinatedbythefield. “Thereseemedtobesomuchtobedone,somanyunansweredquestions,somanypeoplesuffering,”hesaid. Dr.Wrightconsidershiscareera“gratifyingandrichexperience.”Heisproudthathissonanddaughterbothbecamephysicians.Heandhiswife,Susanne,alsohavetwin9-year-oldgranddaughtersanda6-month-oldgrandsonwhoishisnamesake.

NortonHealthcarehasacquiredDXPImaging–Watterson,afree-standingdiagnosticcenterat3430NewburgRoad.ThecenteropenedforbusinessJan.4underthenewname,NortonDiagnosticCenter–DXPImaging. Thefacilityisafull-service,7,825-square-footoutpatientdiagnosticimagingcenterfeaturingMRI,CT,digitalmammography,bonedensity,nuclearmedicineandX-rayequipment.Ithandlesabout7,500proceduresannuallyandemploysninestaffmembers,whonowareNortonHealthcareemployees. StaffintheNGoodHealthDepartmentandNortonDiabetesEducationServicessuggestedWenteconsiderparticipatinginaYMCAdiabetespreventionprogrambeingpilotedinLouisville.Theclassmetforonehoureachweekfor16weeks. “Itwasn’tatypicaldietorweightlossprogram,”Wentesaid.“Ihadapersonaltrainer,BarbaraMillhollan,whohelpedmecreateanexerciseregimenwithweightliftingandtreadmillusetobuildmystrengthandendurance.” Thetraineralsoprovidedhealthyrecipesandencouragedparticipantstokeepadailyfoodjournal. “Iate1,500caloriesadayandkeptalogofeverythingIate,”Wentesaid.“Ialsoworkedmywayuptoweighttrainingtwoorthreetimesaweekanda45-minutecardioworkoutonthetreadmillandellipticalsixdaysaweek.” Wentelearnedtomakehealthierfoodchoices,suchaseliminatingfriedfoods,eatingmorefruitsandvegetables,switchingtoskimmilkanddrinkingmorewater. “Istartedtheprogramthinkingthatitprobablywouldn’twork,becausenothingelsehas,”Wentesaid.“Nowmyrestingheartratehasdroppedfrom80to67,Ihavelostnearly42pounds,andInolongerhaveanybloodsugarproblems.” Wentealsohasbecomearolemodelforhertwocollege-agedaughters,whoaremoreactiveandmakinghealthierfoodchoicesfollowingWente’ssuccess. “I’venoticedtheyaremorethanwillingtoreachforayogurtinsteadofacandybar,”Wentesaid. TheYMCAisreceivingfundingfromtheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionforthepilotandanticipatesexpandingtheprogramtomorecitiesstartingthisyear.

Fannie Bumphus: 50 years on the job

Chancesare,ifyougototheNortonHealthcarePavilioncafeteriabetween2:30and7:30p.m.,orifyouvisitedtheNortonHospitalcafeteriabefore2005,you’vebeenhelpedbycashierFannieBumphus.Acharmingwomanwhodeclinestorevealherage,BumphusbeganhercareerwithNortonHealthcareonFeb.20,1960,workinginthecoffeeshopattheoldChildren’sHospital.Bumphusrecentlyrecalledahumorouseventfromherfirstdaysonthejob50yearsago. “Theladywhowastrainingmetoldmetofixaneggsaladsandwich,andIfixedapotatosaladsandwichbymistake,”shesaid,laughing.“Itwascomical.Thecustomersaidittastedprettygood.” AnativeofAthens,Ala.,BumphusmovedtoLouisvilleaftergraduatingfromhighschool.ShetooksomebusinesscoursesatJeffersonCountyCommunityandTechnicalCollegewhileworking,butshefoundherheartwasnotinthecollegecurriculum. “Businesstomewasallmachines,”shesaid.“Ilikeworkingwithpeople,andIseemtogetalongwithpeoplereallywell.” Afterthecoffeeshopclosed,Bumphuswenttoworkhalf-timeinthehospital’sformularoompreparingbabybottlesandhalf-timeasacashierinthehospitalcafeteria.ShethentransferredtotheNortonHospitalcafeteria,wheresheworkedasacashierformanyyears. “I’veenjoyedworkingwithallthepeople,”Bumphussaid.“Wegrewtobesuchafamilywithourdoctorsandnursesandotheremployees.Ijustlikeworkingwiththefamily.IfIhadtodoitagain,Iwould.”

Aloyalemployee,shebelievesNortonHealthcarehasmuchtooffer. “Thereissomuchpossibilityhere,”shesaid.“Ifyoustartatthelowendofthetotempole,youcanadvanceifyouwantto.Personally,thewayIfeel,it’sagreatplaceandalsoagreatandwonderfulplacetowork.” Herstrongworkethicisevident. “Sometimesitmightseemalittlerough,”Bumphussaid.“Youmightevengetyoureyesrighttearybecauseyoufeelthatithasbeentoorough.Butitonlymakesyouintowhatyouare.” Afterraisingfivechildrenoftheirown,sheandherhusband,James,adopteda6-year-oldgirland3-year-oldboy.Theyalsohaveeightgrandchildren. Bumphusnowworks25hoursaweekatthepavilioncafeteria.HerhusbanddriveshertoworkfromtheirhomeinShivelyandpicksherupintheevening.Outsideofworkshestaysbusywithheradoptedchildren,now19and16,andherchurch,whereshesingsinthechoir.Despitesomearthritisinherknees,sheneverthinksaboutretiring.
