New construction project: Casa Passiva, Mariano Comense
An avant garde low-energy house – with environment-friendly solar technology by ELCO
Something completely new and innovative with regard to ecological technology and domestic comfort – that was the central idea around which the “passive house” in Mariano Comense, a small town near Lake Como in the region of Lombardy, was built. At the same time, this project was a great challenge to all those involved in its planning, because it was unique with regard to energy-effi ciency and energy saving. At the start of the planning phase, there were as yet no buildings of this kind in Lombardy – and therefore no reference data.
ELCO’s contributions to this low-energy house project were an AQUATOP T heat pump for heating and warm water processing, and a solar installation on the roof of the house to heat the swimming-pool and for warm water. For this

purpose, 5 SOLATRON fl at collectors with a total area of 10 m² were installed. To optimally catch the sun’s rays, the collectors were installed at an angle of 30°.
BENEFITS Effi ciency• Maximum yield, thanks to highly effi cient
full-surface copper absorbers• Maximum energy effi ciency – corresponds
to Energy Class A • Long lifetime
Convenience • Self-supporting collector housing with
closed aluminium tray
• Hydraulically optimised modules, mounted vertically or horizontally
• Simple transportation and easy installation through low weight of modules
• Long-lived and reliable, made of high-quality components
Savings• Energy requirement lowered to approx.
10 kWh per m² per year • Heavy reduction in general energy costs • Signifi cant lowering of the CO2 emissions • Short “running warm” time; no wastage of water

AQUATOP T heat pumps with free energy
The operating costs of the AQUATOP T heat pumps are well
below those of conventional heating systems. They exploit the
energy stored in the surroundings (e.g. in the ground water) to
generate warmth for heating. In addition, AQUATOP T heat
pumps relieve environmental stress, because they produce no
CO2 emissions. AQUATOP T heat pumps are characterised by
their top quality and reliability, and bear the “Geprüfte Qualität”
(“Certifi ed Quality”) heat pump seal of approval, which is re -
cognised in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The new system
The upper limit for energy consumption in the villa was set
very low: 10 kWh per m² per annum. For sake of comparison,
90 to 110 kWh per m² per annum is the standard value accor-
ding to Italian legislation. The heating and warm water pro -
cessing are taken care of by an AQUATOP T heat pump – an
innovative solution for house-builders who want to make
themselves completely independent of fossil energies within
their own four walls. AQUATOP T heat pumps generate con-
venient heating warmth with free energy from the surrounding
air and from the soil.
An ELCO solar installation, consisting of 5 SOLATRON A 2.3
fl at collectors, is used to heat the swimming-pool and to supple -
ment the warm water processing. The fl at collectors deliver high
energy yields. This permits savings of up to 60 % in the amount
of energy needed for warm water in a single-family dwelling-
house in the course of a year. SOLATRON A 2.3 combines
quality components and effi cient technology with ease of use
and environmental acceptability.
New construction project: Casa Passiva, Mariano Comense
Energy saving on a large scale: with leading-edge ELCO technology
The project was born of the idea of a family who wanted to
develop something completely new and innovative in the way
of house and home comfort. The objective was to achieve
maximum comfort with environmentally friendly technologies,
both for those who live in the house and for the community.
The house has 3 storeys: a ground fl oor (130 m²) with kitchen,
living-room, 2 bathrooms and 1 bedroom; a 1st fl oor with
2 rooms and 2 bathrooms; and a basement with a garage
and an equipment-operating room.
