The Middle Cedar River Watershed is a 1.5 million-acre watershed that spans parts of 10 counties in Eastern Iowa. It includes some of the richest farmland in the nation. Seventy-three percent of the land is dedicated to row crop agricul-ture. This watershed includes Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Cedar Falls.

Now through the spring of 2019, project partners are working to create a plan for the Middle Cedar River Watershed. This plan will include an analysis of the landscape and strategic implementation priorities. Volunteer landowners may be eligible to receive up to 75% cost-share assistance on flood control and water quality practices.

What is a Watershed?

A watershed is the area of land that drains to a common waterbody, such as the Cedar River. Watersheds can be as small as a footprint or large enough to encompass all the land that drains water into a river. Understanding what a watershed is helps us manage flood water, keep drinking water clean, and safeguard recreational experiences.
