Dear Brethren,

the pace just a little. S chls clse, ldges g dark and vacatins begin. A
gd time r mst. Gardens are planted and awaiting the change time
r the harvest resh ruits and vegetables. Aristtle said “Change in all
things is sweet.”
Well i that is t be believed, I hpe yu like ur newest change in Te
Rite News. We listened t yur suggestins and cmments and the result
is tw magazines in ne nice new water pr package. Te Scottish Rite
Journal and Te Rite News: the same tw great magazines r yur reading
pleasure.
Tis issue is dedicated t Masonic Unity –that raternal bnd between
cllateral bdies in Maryland. Te glue that binds begins with ur GrandLdge, namely ur Mst Wrshipul Grand Master Tmas M. Velvin and
ur Right Wrshipul Deputy Grand Master Stephen J. Pnzill, III. Tese
men have wrked tirelessly t help strengthen the Blue Ldges thrughut
Maryland. Nw we all stand t reap the rewards their erts. Did yu knw that EVERY Ldge
in Maryland has a candidate at sme stage becming a Master Masn? Tere are nw ver 600
men in that prcess.
Every cllateral bdy depends n the Symblic r Blue Ldge r their membership. Masonic
Unity at its best.
Te Symblic Ldge is the basic undatin r ur gentle cra. We must never rget that it is the
undatin upn which every ther bdy in Freemasnry depends. We shuld always remind each
ther that we are Masns rst ur Blue L dge and any additinal degree r hnr nly expands
ne’s hrizns and pprtunities. Tey d nt change the bligatins we tk in ur very rst three
degrees.
Nr des the impact Masnry stp here. Te pprtunity r ne t participate in ther Ma-
snic appendant bdies is almst unending. Each these is truly utstanding in its wn way. In
Maryland, yu may cnsider the Scttish Rite, the Yrk Rite, the Shriners, the all Cedars Lebann,
the Grtt, the Natinal Sjurners and many ther equally imprtant Masnic rganizatins r
clubs. Tey all cntribute t the betterment mankind and this great natin. Tese Masnic bd-
ies wrk in their wn unique way t help meet the needs thse wh might therwise g unaided.
In Maryland, I am prud the act that we all wrk tgether in a diversity ways t achieve a
cmmn gal. Divided we wuld weaken the whle Freemasnry.
May we always lk t ur Blue Ldge and build upn the ideals established therein. Each urwrks are great and accmplish great things, but we must all wrk tgether t achieve true success.
United r the cmmn gd Masnry, ur brther and ur cuntry. Remember that ur strength

Iwas reading a talk given by a Past Grand Mas-
ter the state Calirnia a while back. He
was addressing a grup newly raised Master
Masns. He started “Yu are nw Master Ma-
sns. Yu must be gd, every day, r the rest
yur lie.”
Tis statement has stuck in my mind as I have
thught abut its ull meaning. I knw what it
means t me when I meet a brther Freemasn.
I knw he is hnest, truthul and will help me
i I need assistance. I have und this t be true
thrughut my lie.
But what des it mean t smene wh is nt
a Freemasn? I they meet smene wh identi-
es himsel as a Freemasn by
the ring n his nger r
the pin n his lapel,
what can that per-
sn expect rm thisstranger?
When I was a
yungster living in
East Baltimre, I trav-
eled all ver the city n my
bicycle. My ather, wh was nt
a Freemasn at the time wuld tell
me, “I yu have a prblem, nd a plice
cer, a reman r a man wearing a Masnic
ring, yu can trust them t help yu.”
When I reached the age twenty ne, my
ather and I became Freemasns tgether. We
were raised n the same night. He preceded me
and helped raise me. I miss him, nt nly as my
ather but as my brther in Freemasnr y. We
traveled many places tgether as ather and sn
and as brthers.
When a man wears a ring r pin identiy-
ing himsel as a Freemasn, he represents every
Freemasn in the wrld and every Freemasn in
the wrld will be judged by the way he cnducts
himsel.
S, t restate the wrds the Past Grand
Master Calirnia: “Yu are nw Master Ma-
sns. Yu must be gd, every day, r the rest

Saturday, the Seventeenth April in the year
w Tusand and en was a histric
ccasin. on that day I was given the ppr-
tunity t represent ur Scttish Rite in the ori-
ent Maryland and our Grand Ldge at a very
special event. I, alng with Past Grand Master
Rnald Gerge Belanger, his lvely wie Karen,
and my lady Rena Kay Wilsn, were the distin-
guished guests Scttish Rite Masnry, Prince
Hall Aliatin. Te ccasin was the Samuel .
Daniels, Sr. Cuncil Deliberatin. It was held
at the Clarin Htel and Hager Hall Cnerence
Center in Hagerstwn, Maryland. We were re-ceived a little aer nn with the mst gracius
ceremny alng with Mst Wrshipul Grand
Master Shelden Redden, PHA. Te receptin
was mst dignied and gracius. Aer Grand
Master Redden had made his pening remarks,
bth Past Grand Master Belanger and I were
asked t share ur wn remarks abut this his-
tric day. Tis is the third recrded visit in ur
Suthern Jurisdictin. We were inrmed that
bth Calirnia and Virginia have enjyed simi-
lar invitatins during the past year.
Shrtly aer we were cially received, the
Cuncil Deliberatin was called rm busi-ness t rereshment and their Ladies rganiza-
tin, Te Lyal Ladies Te Glden Circle,
were admitted and intrduced, alng with ur
ladies. We were curse asked t say a ew
mre wrds t their lvely ladies.
My brethren, as this day prgressed and as
Freemasnry was practiced, I can truly say I
have never elt such an utpuring riendship
and brtherly lve as was exhibited by the kind-
ness thse present. Te Deputy r the ori-
ent Maryland, SGIG Lery Lassiter and Grand
Master Redden made us eel as i we were truly
distinguished guests.
Each brther and each lady present were s
charming and delightul. I wish that I culd
prperly share with yu the dignity and decrum
that they practiced n that ccasin. As hard as
we try, they exceeded ur ndest dreams. With
a start like this, ur Scttish Rite relatinship
with ur Prince Hall brethren can nly grw and
imprve bth rganizatins.
Aer the meeting, Past Grand Master Be-
langer and I were arded the hnr attend-
ing the installatin Te Lyal Ladies Te
Glden Circle. Yu wuld have been very prud ur “old Grand Marshal” as he escrted these
lvely ladies t be installed. Te installatin
was presided ver by Te Deputy rm Virginia,
SGIG Gerge M. Ellis. It was a beautiul cerem-
ny and dne with the utmst taste and nesse.
Te day cncluded with a great banquet in
the evening with nt nly their usual tasts, but
als tasts t ur Grand Master, Grand Cm-
mander, and Deputy Mills. o curse we were
arded the usual speeches and were required t
speak again at the banquet. I must cness that
the kind remarks by bth Deputy Lassiter and
Grand Master Redden were designed t make us
very welcme and t hnr the histric ccasin
that this truly was. I am lking rward t the
time when we can entertain the Scttish Rite in
Te orient Maryland, PHA, in the same man-
ner that they entertained us.
I eel a special privilege that Brther Belanger
and I were an integral part in ur recgnitin
r Prince Hall Grand Ldge and again t be a
part this histric rst. May ur assciatin belng and ur actins cntinue t be avrable. Is
it nt wnderul that we teach the same lessns
and have the same gals and can wrk tgether
with the same brtherly lve and aectin that
is necessary r ur raternity t grw and be
prsperus.
Tank yu my brthers Maryland Scttish
Rite r this inspiring pprtunity. I wish that
every brther in the orient Maryland culd
have elt the warm aectin that I was arded
April 17th.
I can truly say I have never
elt such an outpouring o
riendship and brotherly
love as was exhibited by thekindness o those present.
