“HOW SWEET IT IS” is a very familiar quote to most of us - and I’m using it to describe the activities of our Unit during the past two months. We have been busy with either putting on tournaments or preparing for the next one across the Florida panhandle. Did you make it to Panama City? Great people, good food and a well-run tournament. Many snowbirds were playing away and all were so positive about where they were and how much fun they were having. Pensacola also enjoyed a great event. Because of the new venue (very helpful for the wheelchair bound or for those using walkers) along with the excellent support they had from sponsors, they were able to provide a few extras which enhanced the playing experience for all of us. The Pensacola Club did something a little different - they partnered with the City of Pensacola Department of Parks and Recreation by moving the tournament into one of their facilities and gained two business sponsors, Wells Fargo and Roberts Chiropractic Center. Tallahassee will hold their spring event in May. They always come through with a huge success story. Thanks to all of our clubs, Unit 219 is doing well. As your President I continue to learn on the job. (Don’t let anyone tell you that this is a “walk in the park!”) I receive reports concerning our Unit that I didn’t know existed, but that will be helpful to the leadership to do a better job in representing you. Also, ACBL supports our efforts in many ways. Pensacola is in the middle of an EasyBridge program (very successful so far) and we have received so much support from ACBL, in both human and monetary resources. Roger Reff is in charge and is doing an excellent job. At present he has 97 students registered…This is amazing! Armand Grassi reports that Panama City had moderate success with their EasyBridge program. The number of tables at their club games has increased by one table per game during this first quarter. Tallahassee’s EasyBridge program is also doing very well – Amy Reznik still routinely has 5 tables every week, all the way into the third section of the class! We thank all of our EasyBridge teachers for your efforts. A note to all: the average age in District 9 is 72 years! If our game is to survive, we must support all activity which will bring younger players to the table. EasyBridge is just one of the many ways we can do this. Read, listen, and think about it. Spring, at last has arrived here in Florida. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough cold weather. Now we find ourselves saying goodbye to our snowbirds as they head back to their northern nests. We wish them a wonderful summer and look forward to their return next season.
May is the time for honoring our new Goodwill Committee members. This year Unit 240 will honor two wonderful ladies who have given generously to the bridge community. They are Jamie Portell and Jane Davis. They will be honored at a reception during the PGA Regional in Palm Beach Gardens. Please congratulate these two ladies for their well-deserved appointments.
The Unit 240 annual meeting will be held on Saturday, July 10 at the Orlando Sectional. If you are a member of Unit 240, please try to attend this meeting. OVERCALLS There are two common ways for the Opener’s opponents to enter the bidding, the overcall and the “Take-Out Double.” An overcall is a direct bid after the opponent has opened the bidding. When the same bid is made in the “balancing seat” its meaning is a bit different. Remember the “passing a Queen” concept where partner borrows a queen to make his bid? It applies to the balancing overcall as well as the balancing double. An overcall of a suit-bid generally shows a five-card suit that has enough quality that the overcaller wishes partner to lead it, when he gets in. In modern bidding style, the point count is not critical. If you satisfy the above requirements, a low point count should not deter you. Nevertheless, with a six-card (or longer) suit and less than opening count, one makes a pre-emptive jump overcall; otherwise a one-level overcall may be made. A one-level overcall may be made with a four-card suit when the following requirements are satisfied: First, one must have length in the opener's suit, at least three cards, such that a take-out double is not appropriate. Second, the suit must be “chunkier,” that is, of higher quality. For example, I would overcall A J 9 8 2, a five-card suit but I would not overcall A J 9 8. On the other hand I would overcall A Q 10 9 if I had three or more of the opener’s suit. Note that a two-level overcall must have five cards. To make a two-level overcall, one should have a good, five-card suit and almost an opening hand. We can’t mess around at the two-level, it is too easy to go set. Your left-hand opponent who stands over your suit will pass and the opener will double. The left-hand
opponent leaves it in and thus establishes a penalty double with his cards over you and the opener controlling the other suits. Other than the four-card overcall, which in fact does not arise too frequently, you are probably comfortable with overcalls as they are part of the elementary bidding sequences. Remember that a simple overcall can show 7 to 16 points. (With more than 16, we double and then bid our suit.) The real meat of this lesson is in the response to an overcall by the overcaller’s partner whom we shall call the “Advancer.” What you are about to hear may surprise you!
With less than “a limit-raise point-count” 1. close your eyes and bid based on how many cards you have in partner’s suit. With three make a single raise to the next level, even if this would be a “free-bid.” With four-card support jump raise to the three-level. With five-card support, jump to the four level, even if you have no points at all! With three or more card support and 2. “limit-raise point count” cue bid the opponent’s suit. If both opponents have bid different suits, bid the one in which you have a control, that is an ace, king-queen, singleton or void, but not if it takes you over the level of partner’s suit. In such case, make the lower ranking cue-bid. Partner will return to his suit at the minimum level if he had less than an opener and will make a “help-suit game try” bid if he has an opening count or greater. You then answer his help request by returning to the trump suit at the lowest level to answer no or raising to game to answer yes in the help suit.
With three or more card support and an 3. opening hand yourself, make a jump cue-bid. (Does not happen very often.) A change to a new suit is NOT forcing 4. and is corrective. It says, “I can’t stand your suit and my suit is at least as long, please pass." (“drop dead”)
There is much more that can be said about other overcall bids but the above covers 85% of the situations. I hope that you will like knowing partner’s card count when he makes a single raise or double raise of your suit. Remember than when he passes, he has less
than three cards in the suit. If you assume two, you can get a pretty accurate count of the declarer’s hand when the dummy goes down and you may wish to lead your suit to get a ruff. Frequently, in this case, your declarer will have three or four cards in your suit and you will thus know the length of two of the four suits. Assume the other two suits divide equally until you hear otherwise and remember the point-count that declarer has indicated. You may know so much about him that he will think you have looked at his hand!

I am glad to hear that most of our clubs are flourishing in this economic environment. Special notice to be given to Jeanni Blume who has done a terrific job with the Pompano Bridge Club. Kudos to her spirit and energy. Of course our snowbirds are flying north for the summer and we wish them a healthy summer and an early return in the fall.
Our next order of business is to see everyone at our Regional (Gold Points) Tournament at the Hilton in Deerfield Beach from June 28 to July 4. Your Board of Directors would like to see more of the “newer” players join us at OUR Tournament and have decided that players from Unit 243 with less than 100 points will be given special introductory discounts of 50% when playing in the “299er” games. A list of those players will be posted on our web site. We want to encourage those players who may not have played in a Regional to come and enjoy the experience.
As a last note, as much as we take this GAME seriously, please let us not forget ZERO tolerance.
