ACBL Volunteer of the Year - 2011 by Muriel Altus 22 ACBL District 9 Charles Gill, long-time president of and tireless volunteer at the St. Petersburg Bridge Club, has been named ACBL Volunteer of the Year for 2011. ACBL President Craig Robinson, who visited the three Tampa Bay area bridge clubs in May, returned to present Charlie with the award. Charlie was surprised by the award, in fact having prepared an "award" to present to President Robinson. All three Tampa Bay clubs (Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Tampa) are member- owned and run by dedicated groups of volunteers. Charlie's award to Craig was affectionately (and of course incorrectly) referred to as the first-ever Google Caricature Map, showing Craig driving around the country visiting various locations, with amusing artwork. President Robinson made his presidency the Year of the Bridge Club and visited 100 clubs during his tenure. A few clubs were also in Canada, including Toronto, where Charlie first learned bridge (on the internet!). Incoming ACBL President Sharon Anderson, a frequent visitor to club games and sectionals in Florida, has designated 2012 to be the Year of the Volunteer , making the award to Charlie particularly meaningful. As President- Elect Anderson will tell you (and as new ACBL CEO told you in the December ACBL Bulletin), the ACBL couldn't function as effectively and efficiently as it does without all the voluneer energies and efforts. Charles Gill is but one example of the outstanding volunteers throughout Florida and the entire ACBL. What Makes Charlie Special? I hope that you remembered to turn your clocks back. If you didn't, the worst thing that could happen would be to spend an extra hour at the bridge club, selecting bridge books or back issues of magazines to read. Things return to normal at the club this week after the second tournament weekend in a row. Clearwater did a great job and had a great turnout.

Congratulations! In terms of future events, we are looking forward to the following:

Friday December 16 at 6:00. Sign up for bringing a food contribution to the club.

5. The big three in bridge teaching are all going to be gracing the club with their presence in the new year. Barbara Seagram is joining us January 20-21. Audrey Grant is coming March 6-7. Flyers are at the club. To register, email [email protected] or [email protected] On top of this, we are delighted that Leslie Shafer has agreed to be a visiting teacher for the months of January and February. Her exciting schedule of classes will be available shortly.

6. There is much more in the new year also. Look at the list of upcoming events posted at the club. It will keep you coming back to the club again and again.

Ok…that's it…you can go back to whatever you were doing. As for me, I am going to have a back rub.We look forward to having you back at the club this week.

As you may have noticed from this email Charlie sent out a few weeks before Craig Robinson's visit, the Clearwater club rents the SPBC space for its sectional each year, as do two other clubs. This was part of Charlie's grand plan for being able to support the large location in 2004. Starting new games on days where none existed, plus adding a popular Swiss team game every Thursday evening also added to the financial well-being of the club, and of course those 299er events, as you can tell, are thriving. On a recent Friday (an afternoon where Tampa has a healthy-sized game, south St. Petersburg has a huge game, and Clearwater has a growing game), the SPBC's game was 24 tables. From zero tables a few years ago, to 24 tables, now. Talk about the value of an aggressive volunteer! Yes, Charles Gill is the Volunteer of the Year. SBNx

Happy New Year to all! I hope you have had wonderful holidays, and are ready for a terrific season of great bridge. Our January Sectional at Sahib Shrine January 19-22 is the kickoff event. Please be prepared to come and play, and also to vote for the members of our Board of Directors. Voting will be Thursday evening, Friday morning and afternoon, and Saturday morning before the Annual Meeting at 9:15. It is very important that we have your input. Then the biggie is our very own Regional at the Manatee Convention Center February 20-26. The Convention Center has been completely renovated, with new airconditioning, lighting, flooring, restrooms, etc., so it will be better than ever. Of course, we plan on providing wonderful Hospitality to accompany our great Bridge schedule. Lots of Gold Points, great special games for Novices and Intermediates, and two special Youth Games with free entries and refreshments on Saturday! We need your support, so plan on being there. Your Board of Directors is trying to provide some new and different ideas for the new year. We have plans in the works for some special Unit games in the evenings and also on Sunday afternoons. We would also like to promote more special events from the ACBL calendar, such as Charity Pairs and Instant Matchpoint games. Any other suggestions will be gratefully received. Please help us to give you the best in bridge in Unit 102! Our Youth 4 Bridge program is doing well. Students from our three different school programs got together at the Fall Sectional, and had a great time playing bridge and eating pizza! I really enjoy watching them getting involved and having fun playing the game we all love. If you have the time, come out and help with our teaching program. You will have as much fun as they do.

NOTICEFROM THE ACBL HANDBOOK OF RULES AND REGULATIONS When a sectional (excluding STaCs) or higher rated event is being conducted within 25 miles of a club game’s playing site, the club is permitted to hold only its regularly scheduled club masterpoint games (i.e., no special games).

TOURNAMENT ATTENDEES Please summon a director should you encounter a deck of cards which is very far past its prime. Every once in a while we miss replacing a really icky deck, but we are happy to do it if we know about it at the time. Please also call about bidding box cards which need to be replaced.

RUSH PAIRS event which is fully detailed in a special handout prepared by tournament planners and will be available at the upcoming Orlando Regional and also our January Sectional. FREE ENTRIES are available as part of a District 9 Voucher Program. A flyer explaining this program will also be available at the already mentioned tournaments. Under the leadership of volunteer Jane Huerta, Saturday will feature two sessions of play for Youth Players who will earn master points. Lunch will be provided for them. Prominent speakers from the world of bridge will offer lessons and discussion to I/N players each day between sessions. On the schedule as of this writing are Gloria Bart, Harriette Buckman and Mike Cappelletti and Marietta Huggard.

YOUTH FOR BRIDGE The Youth For Bridge program has continued running smoothly under the tutelage of new chairman, Jim Russell. Over 50 students in three schools are participating under the able leadership of Jane Huerta, Iris Wilson and Patty Chiszar. A Youth Tournament was held on Saturday, Nov.19 , during the November Sectional, Twelve young players participated, four from Booker Middle School, three from St. Martha’s and five from Gocio. Winners were Michael Guttierrez and Cloey Schoener with a 72% score, and Austin Rozelle and Joey Worthley came in second with a 65.75% score. Based on the success of the sectional Youth Tournament, two more Youth Tournaments have been scheduled. The first will be at our January Sectional on Saturday, January 21 at 3 p.m., and at the February 2012 Regional on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Also worthy of note is the 2nd place finish in the A stratum and 1st in the B stratum of Evan Berman and Asya Ladyzhensky in the Thursday evening Open Stratified Pairs of the November 2011 Sectional. They scored a 63.76% against the “big guys”. Evan began playing bridge through the youth program and Asya has been volunteering as a teaching coach. Because this program is so successful, there is a real need for more volunteer coaches. If you love bridge and would like to pass on your very special knowledge to the young people of our community, please contact Jim Russell at (941) 592-8117 or [email protected].

JANUARY SECTIONAL AND ELECTIONS STILL AHEAD This issue of SBN will reach you in plenty of time for you to plan to attend Unit 102’s January Sectional at the Sahib Shrine, January 19-22, 2012. It is important that as many Unit members attend as possible. Elections will be ongoing until the Membership Meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 21. Aside from playing bridge, participate in the process of choosing and supporting those volunteers who give so much of their time for you. The Board of Directors is made up of people who want to give back to the game they love. It is not just an honorary job – it is hard work. The November issue of this publication offers both pictures and biographies of this year’s candidates. Read what they say and who they are, and VOTE!

BEHIND THE SCENES So you think a regional bridge tournament just “happens”? Well, think again and learn! A regional bridge tournament is the result of careful planning and a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated volunteers without whom there could be no tournament. The Sarasota Manatee Regional, to be hosted in 2012 (as it is every second year) by Unit 102, will be held at the recently renovated and redecorated Manatee Convention Center in Palmetto, Florida February 20-26. Plenty of free parking and a spacious playing area provide an outstanding backdrop for this annual event that grows in popularity each year. At least 13 hotels, all within easy driving distance of the Convention Center, are offering discounted bridge rates, and The Courtyard by Marriott will serve as the host hotel with free daily shuttles from the hotel to the playing area. Major events will begin at 10:00 am and 2:30 pm each day, with evening games beginning at 7:30 pm. Unit 102, already well-known for its Florida hospitality, will continue the tradition by providing daily free coffee, Florida orange juice, bagels and pastries at the Convention Center. Additionally, free lunches will be provided on two separate days, and there will be free ice cream sundaes in the afternoons of the other three days. Sunday’s lunch during the Swiss also will be subsidized by Unit 102. And the volunteers…Chairman Russ Delaney has made the job his own with many new ideas, great organization, and many hours of careful attention to detail. He is aided by his Assistant Chair, Sandi Murray, who has taken on the major responsibility of lining up hotels for visiting players at great rates . The extremely difficult job of partnerships will be handled by Cynthia Murphy and Sheila Pies. The enormous job of providing our excellent hospitality falls again to Carol Hamilton. Caddymaster will be Elaine Bowers, assisted by Judy Bronstein, Prize Chair is Jane Huerta, and the Information Desk will be manned by Jack and Mary Hawes. An up-todate restaurant booklet will be available, thanks to the efforts of Dennis Kovach and David Logan. World renowned Eric Rodwell will speak in the open room on Wednesday between sessions in a Q&A session designed for advanced players. His new book "The Rodwell Files" will be available at the tournament. Visit the unit website at www.unit102.com for the list of hotels and additional details about the events. Email or call us with any questions—this tournament will be a highlight of your bridge year.

AND FOR THE INTERMEDIATE NOVICE PLAYERS The I-N players have not been forgotten, which is why the plans for their tournament deserve a separate article. Chaired by volunteer Marietta Huggard, the schedule for I-N players is full, educational and competitive. Opportunities to participate in new events abound. Intermediate/Newcomers (I/N) games will be held every day, with trophies as well as master points being awarded to the winners. There is the 0-750 GOLD

INTERCITY BRIDGE CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY The oldest continuous bridge club in Sarasota, the InterCity Bridge Club, recently celebrated 50 years of life with a party and special games. Incorporated on November 1, 1961, the anniversary date of November 1, 2011 just happened to fall on a Tuesday, the Club’s regular playing day The venue has changed over the years, but for many years South Gate Community Center has hosted the weekly games, offering a light bright playing room with large windows overlooking Philippi Creek. Not only has the venue changed, but so have the directors. Current director, Margaret Tominosky, handles many tables each week, which include some of the top players in our area. Over the winter months, an average of 26 tables per game is a common occurrence. Current president, Harriette Buckman, has guided the club over the past two years and has been instrumental in increasing the size of the game. She offers free well attended mini-lessons before each game. If you have never played at the InterCity Bridge Club, why not give it a try one Tuesday afternoon and enjoy the special experience?

FIND A PARTNER VIA COMPUTER A new method of finding partners has recently made its debut with the goal of simplifying partnership match-ups. It will allow players to self manage their postings on the partnership desk and locate compatible players. The design makes it possible to manage your preferences from one screen rather than multiple clicks at other sites. This can be used by players pre-tournament, or in an assisted mode where partnership chairs manage the entries for those computer challenged, and during the tournament where the volume is quite high. Clearly, a number of our players will need someone else helping them with input, but the load could be reduced by allowing others to self-serve… ala the plane reservation process. Click on http://bridgefinesse.com/D9PDeskIndex and give it a whirl.

It is great seeing all our snowbird friends back at the table here in Florida. Our last two Regionals – Naples and Daytona - experienced large table counts. Part of this success is clearly the buy one get one free voucher program which gets new players and those Life Masters with less than 500 masterpoints a free play. The voucher program is one part of a three stage effort to bring out the novices up to intermediate players to our Regional tournaments. Our new regional format will include a Professional two session seminar on Monday mornings and afternoons. This will be subsidized by the Unit and will include lunch in the discounted registration fee. Speakers at these seminars will include our great professional players here in Florida – Larry Cohen, David Berkowitz, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Michael Seamon, Janice Seamon, to name a few. These seminars will be geared to the novice up to intermediate level player and will cover many topics. They will be followed during the week with an upgraded I/N lecture series delivered by many of our fine professional teachers. That will then lead in to our Florida Gold Pairs sessions where novices to intermediates can rack up the gold points needed for Life Master. The week will end on Saturday with a free two-hour lecture from 10 am to noon, followed by a free duplicate session for the 0-5 players, wherever space allows. My goal has always been to keep bridge "great in Florida Unit 128” and now to help throughout our District 9 when possible. We have just purchased 200 Bridgemates for use in scoring at our tournaments. We plan in the future to augment this system with instant access to results and hands from your smart phones. Your thoughts and suggestions are of great value to us and have led to much of what I have talked about here. Please keep your input and feedback coming. I promise we will respond. Friend and fellow Board Member Jay Whipple always ends his correspondence with “What’s Next?". I challenge each of you to jump in and help in this effort. As ever, may all your finesses be successful and I look forward to seeing you at the table in the coming new year, 2012.

Barnet Shenkin’sIdeas about Logical Thinking

Here is an idea, I would like the reader to consider. When you are defending, try and think beyond the next trick. That is, always try to defeat the contract. You are in the West chair on the deal below. Declarer has shown a strong balanced hand. As you have no spade control, it is possible, he may take the first nine tricks. So you choose to lead the ♣A. Your methods are, A for attitude, K for count. Partner plays the 9. Now this may be from Q9x or J9xx. If he has Q9x you would lead a low club but if he has J9xx you must play the K next. It appears there is no answer to this problem or is there one? Choose your play before looking further below.

West North East South1♠

You-West East ♠853 ♠94 ♥985 ♥J104♦654 ♦AJ1092♣AK84 ♣Q92

South ♠AKQ72♥KQ7♦K3♣763

Were the contract 4NT you need to score just four tricks to defeat the contract. It may be necessary to make a decision in the club suit at trick two, lest declarer take his ten. In 3NT you need five tricks, and they all cannot come from the club suit. As Declarer may have nine winners in Spades and Hearts, it is surely correct to play a diamond at trick two. If partner has the ♦A, he will clear up the club position by either playing the ♣Q from three or low club from four. You will now take four club tricks and the ♦A. Should partner by chance hold the ♠A and not the ♦A, this defense works well also, as he clears the clubs after winning the ♠A. Declarer cannot have nine winners. It also may be critical to switch to diamonds, when partner holds ♦KJ and ♥Q JX, lest a squeeze develops later in the hand. Regardless, a diamond switch at trick 2 can rarely if ever fail to defeat the contract, if defeat is at all possible.

UNIT 128 INCENTIVE FOR TEACHERS/CLUBS TO TEACH BEGINNERS Unit 128 would like to see more people taking Beginner bridge classes. In order to encourage reasonably priced initial lessons, we are implementing the following program, effective January 1, 2012.

1. We recognize that the ACBL pays 75% of advertising cost for beginner lessons up to $750 reimbursement for $1000 expenses. For details, see http://www.acbl.org/marketing/coopAdvertising.html

2. In order to maximize participation in these lessons, it is felt that lower cost lessons are important. Therefore, Unit 128 will pay the teacher or club $5 per student per week for advertised lessons that cost $5 or less per lesson for the first 4 weeks. Each lesson must be at least 45 minutes in length.

3. This reimbursement is limited to $50 per week for 4 weeks per advertised lesson series and is not available if the club/teacher receives any other reimbursement for teaching these lessons.

4. Examples: (a) if you offer 4 lessons at $5 each and 8 people sign up, the club/teacher would be reimbursed $160 – 4 weeks times 8 students times $5

(b) if you offer the first lesson free and 20 people sign up, the club/teacher will be reimbursed $50 – the maximum per week.

5. To receive reimbursement, the club/teacher must submit a request by US mail the Unit 128 Controller:

Unit 128, c/o Adrienne Muslin 4510 W. Fig St. #E

Tampa, FL 33609Your request must include both, proof that the lessons were advertised and a list of students registered in the lessons, including name, address and email address.

6. When a person on the list of students joins the ACBL, the club/teacher will receive $2 if they are in Unit 128.

All reimbursements are subject to the approval of the committee, Charles Gill, Chair. For questions, please contact Charlie at (727) 363-1136 or [email protected].
