Veteran muso Brian May is fiercely opposed to Britain’s badger cull

Badgerbacker’sgenocidegaffeLONDON: Queen star BrianMay has publicly apologisedafter he upset Jewish leadersby comparing Britain’s bad-ger cull to genocide.

The veteran musician isfiercely opposed to pest con-trol measures used to stopthe spread of bovine TB tocattle, and described a pro-

ject to cull 5000 badgers fromBritain as ‘‘genocide inthe countryside’’.

The remark sparked out-rage among the UK’s Jewishcommunity leaders, whosaid it was wrong, ridiculousand terrible, as the word ismore commonly associatedwith the Holocaust.

May posted an open letteron his website apologising.

‘‘My sincere apologies, ofcourse, to anyone who feltupset by this,’’ he said. ‘‘Itwould never be my intentionin any way to slight the Jew-ish community. So many ofmy most loved and respectedfriends are Jews.’’

Rowlinghits onawizardfilm idea

JK Rowling

LONDON: Harry Potter auth-or JK Rowling is writing aseries of spin-off films set inthe magical world of the Brit-ish boy wizard.

The first film will be calledFantastic Beasts and Whereto Find Them.

It will be based on a text-book of the same name usedby Harry and his classmatesat the Hogwarts School ofWitchcraft and Wizardry,Rowling said on her Face-book page.

Set in New York andfeaturing magical zoologistNewt Scamander — the auth-or of Harry’s school textbook— the Warner Bros filmmarks Rowling’s screenwrit-ing debut, two years afterthe final movie releasein the eight-part seriesspawned by her phenomenal-ly successful novels.

‘‘I always said that I wouldonly revisit the wizardingworld if I had an ideathat I was really excitedabout — and this is it,’’ the48-year-old said.

She pitched the idea her-self after the US studio ap-proached her about makingFantastic Beasts into a film.

‘‘I thought itwas a fun idea, but the idea ofseeing NewtScamander —the supposedauthor of Fan-

tastic Beasts — realised byanother writer was diffi-cult,’’ she wrote.

‘‘Having lived for so longin my fictional universe, Ifeel very protective of itand I already knew a lotabout Newt.

‘‘As hardcore Harry Potterfans will know, I liked him somuch that I even married hisgrandson, Rolf, to one ofmy favourite charactersfrom the Harry Potter series,Luna Lovegood.’’

Rowling said the story wasneither a prequel nor a se-quel to the Harry Potterseries, but an extension ofthe wizarding world.

‘‘The laws and customs ofthe hidden magical societywill be familiar to anyonewho has read the Harry Pot-ter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will startin New York, 70 yearsbefore Harry’s gets underway,’’ she explained.

ALL IS FORGIVENSYDNEY: Jessica Rowe is re-turning to the Ten Networkalmost a decade after it triedto sue the TV presenter. The channel yesterday an-nounced Rowe would be thefourth host of its new morn-ing program, Studio 10, join-ing Australian of the Year ItaButtrose and journalists JoeHildebrand and Sarah Harrison the panel program.
