Kenya was a British colony in East Africa given independence in 1964.

Jomo Kenyatta a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi is considered the father of modern Kenya.

Disappointed by the slow speed of independence many Kenyans joined the Mau Mau movement in the 1950’s.

Actively fought the British for Kenya’s independence.

More than 14,000 died during the Mau Mau rebellion.

Kenyatta was arrested as a leader of the Mau Mau rebellion despite his advocacy of non-violence.

To this day many consider Kenyatta’s trial to have been rigged by the British authorities.

Kenyatta served nine years in jail before emerging as Kenya’s first President.

Freedom Fighter: Someone who fights for his peoples right to be free.

  Terrorist: Someone who uses terror

to achieve a political goal.  One man’s freedom fighter is

another man’s terrorist
