Disappointed by the slow speed of independence many Kenyans joined the Mau Mau movement in the 1950’s.

Actively fought the British for Kenya’s independence.

More than 14,000 died during the Mau Mau rebellion.

Kenyatta was arrested as a leader of the Mau Mau rebellion despite his advocacy of non-violence.

To this day many consider Kenyatta’s trial to have been rigged by the British authorities.

Kenyatta served nine years in jail before emerging as Kenya’s first President.
