KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Julie Steele – July 20, 2:00-3:00 PM
Julie Steele, Dip Teach, BPE (Hons), PhD, FASMF Professor, Biomechanics Director, Biomechanics Research Laboratory University of Wollongong, Australia
Julie's research focuses predominantly on the biomechanics of injury prevention with a specific interest in mechanisms of lower extremity dysfunction, particularly anterior cruciate ligament injury during dynamic landings. Her current research interests also include intelligent textiles as biofeedback systems, breast movement and brassiere design, safe footwear for elderly women for falls prevention, and the effects of obesity in childhood on musculoskeletal structure and functional performance.

Geoff Fernie – July 21, 4:30-5:45 PM (Labarge Public Lecture)
Geoff Fernie, PhD Senior Scientist and Director Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) University Health Network, Toronto
Geoff develops technologies for two broad purposes:
To prevent injury and disease;
To help individuals and their family caregivers continue to live in their own homes as
they age.
He has maintained a focus on the reduction of falls through the development of innovative
mobility products, non-slip winter footwear and improvements to accessibility and building
codes. He has made significant advances in preventing hospital acquired infections by improving
hand hygiene. His recent involvement in the development of a disposable instrument for home
diagnosis of sleep apnea has the potential to significantly reduce the prevalence of cardiovascular
complications resulting from untreated sleep apnea. Geoff has been responsible for many
products that assist people's independence, including innovative wheelchairs and bathroom aids.
Many of his inventions have reduced the physical burden of caring for people, including the
prevention of back and shoulder injuries in professional nurses and family caregivers caused by
lifting and moving people.

B.J. Fregly – July 22, 8:30-9:30 PM
B.J. Fregly, PhD Knox T. Millsaps Professor, Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering University of Florida, Florida
Imagine a world where neurorehabilitation and orthopedic interventions are custom tailored to
the patient, similar to the way suits can be custom tailored to the business executive. Rather than
receiving an "off the rack" treatment, each patient receives a personalized treatment fitted to his
or her unique clinical needs using a patient-specific computational model. Each model is
constructed from the patient's pre-treatment movement, neural control, and imaging data and is
used to perform state-of-the-art simulations that predict the patient's post-treatment function.
Clinicians combine subjective clinical experience with objective computational predictions to
determine which treatment and associated parameters will maximize the patient's functional
outcome. In some cases, common treatment options are rejected. In others, less common
treatment options are modified to improve their effectiveness. In yet others, entirely new
treatment options are designed. The end result is millions of patients whose quality of life and
longevity are greatly improved through the use of computational technology.
The goal of the Computational Biomechanics Lab at the University of Florida is to make this
futuristic scenario a reality. The current emphasis of the lab is on using computational models to
improve walking function in individuals with stroke, Parkinson's disease, or knee osteoarthritis.
The primary technical fields used for this endeavor include multibody dynamics, numerical
methods (especially optimization), contact mechanics, and computer programming (primarily
Matlab and C++).
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Hamilton and the 19th biennial conference of the Canadian Society for Biomechanics / Société Canadienne de Biomécanique hosted by McMaster University. We hope you enjoy the program. The program reflects the organizing committee member backgrounds of engineering, rehabilitation science and kinesiology. In addition to the stimulating scientific sessions, keynotes and symposia, we have developed sessions for career preparation, teaching, and funding. We have packed the schedule with numerous opportunities for social and research time to renew old friendships, create new friendships and research opportunities.
For many, Hamilton has long been known as Canada’s “steel town” but has been recently been called “Canada’s Brooklyn.” It is home to Tim Horton’s coffee, the Tiger-Cats, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, the Thomas brothers – Dave and Ian, and Kenesky’s Goalie Pads.
McMaster University was founded in 1887 and is one of only four Canadian universities consistently ranked in the Top 100 in the world. A medical-doctoral, research-intensive university, McMaster is dedicated to teaching, learning and service. McMaster pioneered “problem-based learning” used around the world. The University is home to more than 62 research centres and institutes and six faculties: The DeGroote School of Business, and the Faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences. McMaster also hosts the Labarge Optimal Aging Initiative, which funds research and knowledge translation activities that aim to keep older adults healthy and active as long as possible. This initiative inspired a public event to showcase the critical role biomechanics can play in aging research. With a total student population of more than 30,000, McMaster welcomes students from 80 countries. In recent years, McMaster’s athletics teams have been in the spotlight with the
Marauders winning National Championships in football, women’s rugby, and wrestling.
We hope you enjoy CSB/SCB 2016!
