Israel said Friday its hope to reach zerogreenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as thousandsof protesters gathered in Tel Aviv to demand actionahead of next week's U.N. summit on climatechange.
As a small country, Israel contributes little to globalwarming, but officials say it has much to offer theworld in terms of green technologies. Israel, whichhas already had to adapt to life in a parchedregion, is widely considered a world leader in areassuch as solar energy storage, sustainable proteinalternatives, agriculture technology anddesalination.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced thepledge in a statement Friday, saying it was a
continuation of efforts already underway to combatclimate change.
"With the new goal, Israel is lining up alongside the developed countries that are already taking actionto attain the goal of zero emissions," he said. "Weare responding to the global challenge, findingtechnological solutions and joining in to achieve thisimportant goal."
Israel had previously said it would fall short of thegoal of the international community to reach zeronet emissions by 2050, expecting to reduceemissions by 85% by that time. Environmentalistshave cited a lack of political will by previousgovernments and the country's reliance on newlydiscovered natural gas for energy for the lowertarget.
