PRE-CONSTRUCTION CHECKLIST
The excavation limits and the location of the R-Tank® System should bestakedout.Thedesigndrawingsshouldbeused todetermine theselocations.Iftheexcavationlimitsarenotshownontheplans,thenadd2’on each side of the R-Tank®systemtodeterminethelimits.
Excavate thedesignated surveyedareaaccording toplans followingallrelevantlocal,stateandOSHAguidelines.Typicalexcavationsshouldinclude:- Two foot perimeter around R-Tank® to allow for proper compaction of backfill.- Enoughdepthtoaccommodateaminimum3”base(ifrequired)below the R-Tank®.
Level the bottomof the excavation (Fig. 4) as shownonplans.Mostexcavationshaveaflatbottomwhilesomewillslopetowardtheoutletpipe.

If R-Tank®unitsarriveonyourproject inflatpanelstheywillneedtobeassembledon-site.Buildingtheunitsshouldtake2-3minutespersegment.This is a conservative estimate used to approximate the total man hours neededforassembly.Theestimateincludestheworkersdoingtheassemblyaswellasmaterialhandlerstokeeptheassemblyworkersmoving.

AssemblyInstructions–Usingthecorrectnumberofsmallplates(R-TankLD® = 4, R-TankHD® = 5, and R-TankSD ® = 5), connect small panels into one large panel(Fig.2A)inlocationsshowninFig.1.R-TankLD® modules will use the pinholelocationsmarkedwithreddotsinFig.1,whileHDandSDunitswillusepinholelocationscircledingreen.Use4-plateLDmodulesonlyfornon-traffic,greenspaceinstallations.
Next, working from one end to the other, attach a second large plate on the oppositesideofthefirst(Fig.2B).

STEP 2 - ASSEMBLE R-TANK® UNITS
Figure 2 Follow these steps to assemble a 5-plate R-TankHD®.
TIP: To increase the speed of the installation, many contractors choose to assemble the R-Tank®unitspriortoorduringexcavationandbasepreparation(Step1). Othercontractorswaituntilthesestepsarecompletedandthenperformthe assemblyINTHEEXCAVATION(Fig3)allowingcompletedunitstobeplacedinto theirfinallocationastheyareassembled.Considerwhichoptionwillworkbest foryourproject.

CompletedR-Tank®unitsshouldbestagedasclosetotheinstallationareaaspossible.
Preparethesubgradeaccordingtoplans.Baseofexcavationmustbeuniform,levelandfreeofdebrisandsoftoryieldingsubgradeareas.Compacttoatleast95%StandardProctorDensity(orasrequiredbyEngineer)unlessinfiltrationofstormwaterintosubgradeisdesired.Aminimumbearingcapacityof2,000psf(perspecsection3.02D)mustbeachieved prior to beginning installation of R-Tanks®.
Ifthesubgradeispumpingorappearsexcessivelysoft,thedesignengineershouldbeconsultedforadvice.

STEP 3 - PREPARE BASE
TIP: Creatingasmooth,levelplatformwillallowforfasterinstallation of R-Tank®modules,astheywillfittogetherevenly,eliminating detailworkthatcandelayyourprogress.

In regions with sandy soils meeting the requirements noted and where the subgrade elevation is above the groundwater table, imported base materials maynotbeneeded.(Formoreinformationseespecificationsection2.03A.)
Standing water in the excavation will prevent proper base preparation and mustberemoved,ifpresent.
Installbasematerials.Basematerialsmustmeetspecsection2.03A.
Grade and level base as shown on plans with no more than 1/2” variance (+/-1/4”).Basemustbefreeofdebrisandlargerocks.
Geotextile will be required below the R-Tank®onmostprojects,butnotall.Checkyourplanstoensurethatgeotextileistobeplacedbetweenthebaseand the R-Tank®units.
Cutfull-widthstripsofGeotextiletotheproperlengthandplacethemoverthebase,coveringtheflooroftheexcavation.Thegeotextileshouldextendat least 2’ beyond the edge of the R-Tank®footprint.
TIP: Some contractors choose to cut the geotextile strips long enough to wrap up the sides and over the top of the R-Tank® inasinglepiece(Fig.5).Ifspaceallowsandthefoldedflaps of geotextile will not slow your progress, you may want to considerdoingthis.Ifalinerisrequiredonyourproject,this methodshouldbeusedtoprotecttheliner.

Geotextiles are flammable. No smoking should be permitted on thegeotextile.Adjacentpanelsofmaterialshouldbeoverlappedby12”ormore,asshownontheplans.
Use pins, staples, sandbags or other ballast to hold the geotextile in place, preventingitfromblowingorslidingoutofposition.
Patch any holes made in the Geotextile by placing a small patch of fabric over thedamagedarea.Thepatchmustbelargeenoughtocoverthedamagedareawithatleast12”ofoverlaponundamagedmaterial.
If a liner and/or additional geotextile is required per plans, install these now asshownontheprojectplans.
Determinethestartinglocation.Itisoftenhelpfultouseaninletoroutletpipetoguideyou.Usingastringline,establishtwoadjacentedgesoftheR-Tank®footprint.Ensurethatyourcornerissquare.Markthesetwoedgeswithmarkingpaintandremovethestringline(Fig.7).
IMPORTANT: If using a liner, be careful not to puncture it withstakesorpinswhileplacingyourstringline.
Begin placing R-Tanks®inthecornerofthemarkedarea.DoNOTplaceunitsontheirsides,asthiswillvoidthewarranty.Checkyourplanstoensurecorrect orientation of the R-Tanks®(Fig.8).
ChecktheplanstoensuretheR-Tanks® are running in the correct direction (North/Southvs.East/West)tomatchthefootprintshownonplans.- R-Tank®Width–15.75”- R-Tank®Length–28.15”
TIP: Moving R-Tank® units into the excavation quickly is essentialtoaprofitableinstallation.Manycontractors fabricate a platform that can be lifted by their forklift to quicklymovealargenumberofunitswitheachtrip.

STEP 6 - INSTALL INSPECTION / MAINTENANCE PORTS
R-Tank®unitsshouldfittogetherevenly.Occasionalminorgapsbetweenunits(<½”)orvariationsintheheightoftheunits(<½”)areacceptable(Fig.9),butreasonableeffortsshouldbemadetominimizethesevariations.Ifgaps or height variations persist through 3 or more adjacent units, remove themodulesandpullbackthetextiletorepairbase.
No lateral connections between adjacent R-Tank®unitsarerequired.
IMPORTANT: Anyonewalkingdirectlyontopoftheunitsshould be instructed to keep their weight over the vertical supportsofthetanktopreventdamagingtheunits.
The large side plate of the tanks should be placed on the perimeter of the system.Thiswillrequirethattwoendsofthetankareawillhavearowoftanksplacedperpendiculartoallothertanks(Fig.10).
Option1:Endcolumnshouldcover75%ofthefinalmodule.Option2:Endcolumnmayextendbeyondthefinalrow.
Allportsshouldbemadefrompipelongenoughtoextendfromthebottomof the R-Tank®tofinishedgrade.TheyaretypicallySchedule40PVCpipe,butcanbeformedfromothertypesofpipe,aswell.
Identify the location of all ports and remove the R-Tank®fromeachlocation.
Inspection Ports (if required):Typicallymadefrom6”Schedule40PVCpipe,cutthepipetolength,leavingenoughexcesstotrimthetopwhenfinalgradeisreached(Fig.11).
If the pipe is not already perforated, cut several horizontal slots in the pipe startingatthebottom.Perforationsshouldextendashighastheheightofthe R-Tank®unitsbeingused.Noperforationsshouldbevisibleabovethetop of the R-Tank®oncetheportisinplace.
Using your reciprocating saw, cut the horizontal R-Tank®plates(Fig.12)toaccommodatetheport.Ifthepipewillnotfitbetweentheverticalinteriorplates,removingthecenterplatewillcreateadequatespacefortheport.Ifspace allows, shift the two remaining internal plates to the inner connection points(shownasreddotsinFigure1)tobalancetheunit.

For all units larger than a Single R-Tank®, you will need to disassemble the R-Tank®inordertocuttheinteriorplates.ReassembletheR-Tank® when cutting is completed, and replace the R-Tank®intotheproperlocation.
Install the pipe into the R-Tank®unit.
Seal the opening on top of the pipe with a cap or temporary lid to prevent debrisfromenteringthesystem.
Maintenance Ports:Typicallymadefrom12”Schedule40PVCpipe(checkplansforactualsizeand type of pipe), cut the pipe to length, leaving enough excess to trim the topwhenfinalgradeisreached.
Using your reciprocating saw, cut several 8” triangular notches into the bottomofthepipeasshownonplans(Fig.14).Drillseveralairventsintothe pipe just below where the top of the R-Tank® will be once the pipe is installedintothetank.

For all units you will need to disassemble the R-Tank® in order to cut and/ormovetheinteriorplates.
Reassemble the R-Tank®whencuttingiscompleted.Remembertoinsertthe non-corrosive anti-scour pad in the bottom of the R-Tank®(shouldfitdirectly below the Maintenance Port), and replace the R-Tank® into the properlocation.(Fig.15)
Install the pipe into the R-Tank®unit(Fig.16)andmakesureitisplumb.
Temporarily seal the opening on top of the pipe with a cap or temporary lid topreventdebrisfromenteringthesystemduringconstruction.
Cleanoffanydebris thatmaybe lyingon topof theexposedgeotextilearound the perimeter of the R-Tank®.
CutstripsofgeotextiletofitoverthetopanddownbothsidesoftheR-Tank® withatleast2’ofexcessmaterialoneachsideofthesystem.This2’flapshould overlay the geotextile placed below the R-Tank® units, creating a clean24”overlaptosealthesystem.

WherethegeotextileintersectsanInspectionorMaintenancePort,cutan“X”intothegeotextileandpullitoverthepipe.Theflapsofthe“X”shouldpointAWAYfromtheR-Tank®(Fig.19).Useafabricbootandastainlesssteelbandclamptosealtheflapstothepipe.
Fold geotextile for outside corners similar to sheets on a bed, and lay excess materialflatagainstR-Tank®(Fig.21).Leavecornersloosetoavoidcreatingweakspotsinthematerial.Temporarilysecureexcessfabricwithducttape.
ConnectInlet&Outlet Pipes
Where the inlet and outlet pipes connect to the R-Tank®,cutan“X”intothegeotextilesothatthepipemakesDIRECTcontactwiththeR-Tank®.Pulltheflapsofthe“X”overthepipesothattheflapsofthe“X”pointAWAYfromtheR-Tank®.Useastainlesssteelbandclamptosealtheflapstothepipe.
If used, adjust all pipe boots so that the fabric lays snug against the R-Tank®.Tightenthebandclampswithascrew/nutdriver.Useducttapetosecurethebootflaptotheoutsideofthegeotextileenvelope.
Walk bottom edge of geotextile along the sides of R-Tank to eliminate gaps between the fabric and the bottom corner of the R-Tank®.

DumpbackfillmaterialadjacenttotheR-Tank® and, using your LGP Skid Steer or Dozer, push the material over the R-Tank®system(Fig.24).Backfillmustmeetrequirementslistedinspecificationsection2.03B.

Lightlycompacttopbackfillto95%standardproctordensityorasshownonplansusingyourwalk-behindtrenchroller.Alternately,aroller(maximumgrossvehicleweightof6tons)maybeused.Rollermustremaininstaticmode until a minimum of 24” of cover has been placed over the modules (perspec,section3.05AS).Sheepfootrollersshouldnotbeused.
Geogridisrequiredforallload-bearingapplications(Fig.25),suchassystemsplacedbeneathparkinglotsandroads.Itisnotrequiredabovesystemsusedinopenspacewheretrafficisprohibited,suchassportfieldsornaturalareas.
Geogrid must be placed 12” above the R-Tank®.Overlapadjacentpanelsby18”minimumorasspecifiedinplans.RolloutGeogridoverthetopofthesystem, with the edges of the grid extending 5’ from R-Tank® footprint or 3’beyondtheedgeofexcavationormoreasshowonplans(refertoCADdetailHS20loads).

TIP: WhenpushingbackfilloverR-Tank® units, work in the direction of the geotextile overlap to avoid shovingmaterialbetweenthefabriclayers.
WARNING: Aminimumof12”ofmaterialmustbemaintained between the Dozer tracks and the top of the R-Tank®. For best results, push at least 14” (or more if needed) ofbackfillovertheunitssothatasthematerial compacts beneath the dozer, a 12” minimum lift is maintained.Itisrecommendedthatthedozer drivestraightonandthenbackstraightoffofthe systemduringbackfillplacement.Turning movementsarelikelytoshovethebackfill material, reducing the thickness of the lift and potentially damaging the R-Tank®modules.
WARNING: Somematerialswillcompactsignificantlywhile othersmayshoveexcessivelyasyouwork.Never allow your lift thickness to compact to less than 12” withoutaddingmorematerial.
WARNING: Dump trucks should not drive over or dump material on top of the R-Tank®.

If additional cover or pavement base is required by the plans, begin placing andcompactingmaterialinthesamemannerasdiscussedinStep9.Pushcovermaterialparalleltothegeogridforbestresults(Fig.26).Allcovermaterialmustmeetrequirementsofspecificationsection2.03.
ConstructionloadsareoftentheheaviestloadsthateverdriveovertheR-Tank® System, and there are many construction vehicles that exceedtheHS20standardthatmostdetentionsystemsaredesignedtomeet.Toprevent damage from these vehicles, the installation should be securedtopreventunauthorizedtrafficfromdrivingoverthesystemonceithasbeeninstalled.
Projects nearing completion (within three months) should use warning tapeortemporaryfencingtosecuretheinstallation(Figure27).
For larger projects with ongoing construction activities, consider a more durablemethodforpreventingunauthorizedtrafficfromaccessingthesystem(Figure28).
