UW School of Music – Modern Band and Studio Jazz Ensemble
On Monday, March 11 I attended Uw School of Music’s Modern Band and Studio Jazz
Ensemble performance. I was truly impressed by both of the band’s performances and the
experience really brought me back to my days of performing in high school. One of my
favorite experiences when watching live music, especially when performed by young
musicians, is seeing them being comfortable on stage. While not everyone on stage was
comfortable I still enjoyed seeing the band and ensemble at least trying to “fake” it. The
modern band had some really interesting music that I was unfamiliar with, specifically
Ungetüm. I enjoyed that piece quite a bit. The Jazz ensemble, which was my favorite part of
the night played Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love which is a piece that I have played, and
really enjoyed in the past. Once we moved on to the vocally focused piece I was able to
enjoy Anne Kane’s voice. She has an extremely emotive timbre to her voice and I really
enjoyed how much of herself she put into the performance. I could definitely feel that as
she was singing she was giving it her all and really living the music instead of just singing it.
I think that is truly the essence of what Jazz art is and she portrayed it in a way that was
inspiring to me.
Below is a picture of my ticket and the program from the show.
