Dear Parent/Guardian
I hope you enjoy reading this festive edition of Hotline. This last week has seen several events that
have started to get us all in the
festive mood. Monday 14th December saw our Year 8 pupils welcome over 100 Grandparents into school for the afternoon. On
Tuesday 15th December we all enjoyed a Christmas lunch
prepared for us by our kitchen staff from Chartwells. Wednesday 16th
December saw some of our extremely talented pupils take to
the stage for our Christmas Performance and the term
concluded with tutors hosting small
parties for their tutees.
Earlier in the term, we again had lots of individual and year team
successes at the District Swimming Gala. The pupils represented the
school in an exemplary fashion and overall finished an excellent second (by only the smallest of margins).
Tragic incidents that have happened in Paris and in schools in America recently have impacted on
decisions we have made at Healing School recently. In early
December we cancelled the Year
11 trip to France and have now taken steps to further safeguard
everybody in school by introducing a new electronic gate system to
prevent any strangers from entering the school. We know this
may cause inconvenience to parents who come into school
during the day, but I am sure you will accept our priority is to protect
our pupils.
I would like to finish by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and look forward to working with you in
the new year to ensure the continued success of every pupil at
Healing School.

Hotline
New Security Measures Now in
Operation to Access School.
In order to further improve the safety of
pupils in the school and to safeguard
everybody, we have introduced two
electronic gates.
Visitors can still access both school car parks, but
between 9:00am and 3:00pm every day visitors
and parents will no longer be allowed to just walk
into the school. At each gate there is a “bell
button” which can be pressed to speak to our
reception, who will then allow visitors or parents
onto the premises. All people entering the site
must then report to the main reception. We hope
this will not inconvenience parents too much, but
will help make the school a safer environment.
Visitors to Healing
School will now have
to request access to
enter the school, via
the new electronic
gates.
Healing School Remembers With Poppies
Each year, Pupils and staff of Healing School,
like to pay their respects to those who gave their lives fighting in both the First and
Second World Wars, by laying a wreath of remembrance at the cenotaph in Healing
village. This year, the wreath was laid by Year 11 senior prefects Amber
Harris, Lucy Howes, Jack Herring,
Jonathan Borrill Townsend, Head Girl Kaysha Nada and Head Boy Jaden Walker, pictured

Children in Need
Fundraising Day
Pennies on Pudsey
ABOVE: It’s a thumbs up from Pudsey
(Alfie Hallett) with Jaden Walker.
Pupils raising money for Children in Need, came up with a
novel idea about how to raise more money for the charity.
Pupils in Years 7 and 8 drew six enormous Pudsey bears and asked
pupils to cover the images with any spare change they had after
the cake sale. Every Pudsey was filled and went a long way to
boosting the final donation total of £2,856.
BELOW: Mrs Watcham with Year 9 pupils Alicia James, Dana Stanley, Mrs Fiona Kemp from Lloyds Banking Group, Abbie
Bloomfield, Holly Barker, Harvey Cherry and Phoebe Coles.
Annually, the school
supports Children in Need
fundraising appeal and, this
year, we worked with
Mrs Fiona Kemp,
representative from the
Lloyds Banking Group, to
embrace their ‘Champions
of Change’ initiative.
Mrs Kemp spoke in assemblies
about the good causes, both
home and abroad, that
benefit from the money raised
by the annual Children in Need
appeal. The children were
inspired and came up with
some excellent ideas about
how to boost fundraising.
The non-uniform day raised
over £1,000 alone!
Mrs Watcham held a successful
Pudsey cake competition.
Pupils also took part in a
sponsored silence and participant Jenna Ornsby from Year 7 raised
an impressive £80 by staying silent all day! The break time cake
sale stall was a huge hit and heaved with cakes and goodies made
by generous pupils, staff and parents. Within 15 minutes, almost
all were sold, with the last few disappearing over lunch time.
All in all, it was a fun occasion, with serious money donated. The
school raised over £2,800. Thank you to all who participated in the
event and to all those who made donations.

Operation Christmas Child Shoebox
Appeal 2015
For the twelfth year running, Healing School has
once again supported the Samaritan’s Purse
Operation Christmas Child shoe box appeal.
This year, the school managed to fill an impressive 172
boxes: twenty two more boxes than last year.
Pupils and staff donated
goodies to fill the boxes
and all tutor groups
were involved in making
sure each box was
filled with useful items
and treats, before being
wrapped in festive paper.
The boxes are on their
way to Romania to be
distributed in orphanages
and rural areas, to those
less fortunate.

To raise money for this year’s Children in Need
appeal, Mrs Watcham ran a Pudsey inspired cake
making competition.
The level of entries were very impressive and it was
difficult to choose a winning cake, However, Eleanor
Pickett from Year 11 won the competition with a fantastic
cake which was filled with Smarties.
The cake was raffled off and won by Premises Manager,
Mr Flarty, who then very generously returned the cake to
Eleanor to enjoy with her family after all her hard work.

Yr 8 Grandparents’ Day 2015
On 14th December, Year 8 pupils
invited their grandparents into school
for a Christmas themed afternoon of
hospitality and entertainment.
Pupils met with their grandparents in the
New Hall for tea and cake and to take part in
a Christmas quiz, hosted by quizmaster
Mr Knapton. Two families were successful in
answering all 28 questions correctly, but
Olivia Edwards and her grandma went on to
answer the tie-breaker question correctly
and received a tin of Quality Street for their
efforts.
The audience were then treated to a medley of
seasonal songs performed by pupils across all year
groups. Kaysha Nada in Year 11 performed a
delightful rendition of ‘Have yourself a merry little
Christmas,’ accompanied by Mrs Pankhurst on the
piano, while Year 10 boys Martin Riley and Ryan
Kirby performed an up tempo rendition of ‘Frosty
the snowman’ on electric guitars.
After a festive sing-a-long, everyone was in the
Christmas spirit and the pupils and their
grandparents thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon.

other racers and although she didn’t
win the award, was delighted to be
nominated and came 6th in the
competition.
Charlotte is currently learning to drive
a car and has been encouraged by her
dad. Charlotte said: ‘I come from a
family that is very interested in motor
sports. When I was little, I used to go
to the track to watch my cousin
racing. I was inspired and my dad
encouraged me to get involved.
I began racing when I was 6 and have
now been kart racing for 7 years. I
am looking forward to racing cars
when I turn 14.’
Charlotte’s commitment to the
sport takes her to the Whilton
Mill race track in
Northamptonshire most
weekends, where she is
currently being tutored by
renowned racing instructor –
Jock Clear, who has worked as
Senior Performance Engineer
for both Lewis Hamilton and
Michael Schumacher. Charlotte
even had the opportunity to
meet Lewis Hamilton at the
track and was delighted that
he posed for a ‘selfie!’
Charlotte describes the
experience of kart racing as
both nerve wracking, but
exciting and loves to compete.
‘My friends are really
encouraging. They think it is
good that I am a girl
competing in this type of
sport. I don’t know what the
future holds, but I would like
to be a professional motor
racer when I grow up.’

Lorenzo
Ieronimo
recently took
first prize in the
international
kickboxing
competition.
Lorenzo took first
place in the
competition for
his height and
weight, after
competing against
5 other national competitors at the kickboxing championships in Barnsley.
Lorenzo joined the Grimsby Freestyle kickboxing Club two years ago, but only
decided to take up the sport up at competition level last year. He has done
extremely well in such a short space of time, winning several competitions.
Lorenzo has been fortunate enough to meet some big names in the kickboxing
world, including world champion kickboxers Szolt Moradi from Hungary and
Raymond Daniels of the USA.
Lorenzo said he has made some good friends through participating in the sport and
both his family and school friends are really proud of his achievements.

Team Freestyle Kickboxing Club for 3 years and for the last year, have travelled around the country
competing at national level. The duo train weekly, including 2 fighting sessions a week.
Rachel said that the training sessions help to build confidence and she really likes the feeling of being
in a team. “I love kickboxing. It keeps me fit and is completely different from anything else I do.
It has definitely increased my confidence and it’s a great way to learn new skills and meet new people
from around the country.”
Year 8 Geography Pupils Volcano Challenge
This term, Year 8 Geography students have been designing and
constructing their own volcanoes.
Students were set the task of creating a volcanic eruption. There were
some superb creations and the pupils couldn’t wait to get outside and
watch their volcanoes blow their tops!
The pupils could either used coke and mints or bicarbonate of soda and
vinegar to create a chemical reaction and make their volcanoes explode.
Some of the students decided to
build volcano cakes. The pupils
really enjoyed competing and
seeing which volcano could blow
the ‘lava’ highest. By the end of
the experiment, Mr McCrae was
drenched in Coca-Cola for the rest
of the day!
Pupils watch some of the superb
volcanic eruptions they created.
Long Service Awards
At the end of each year, Healing School presents long service
awards to those staff who are committed employees.
This year, awards were presented to Lunchtime Supervisor, Mrs Pat Wood
and P.E Teacher, Mrs Helena Yeadon. Both staff members have worked at
Healing School for over 10 years. School of Governors, Mr Graham Walker
congratulated Mrs Wood and Mrs Yeadon and thanked them for their
commitment and dedication to the school.

Healing Helpers
Healing Helpers was
established 3 years ago by
Miss Plant and Mrs Ranyard,
as a support network for
children within the school .
Pupils are able to discuss issues
surrounding friends, homework,
relationships, amongst many other
minor problems they may
experience. It is a particularly
useful service for year 7 pupils
who have made the transition
from primary school to secondary
in the September term.
The service is now run by Mrs
Hallatt, with the support of Miss
Plant and Mrs Ranyard and is also
assisted by Year 9 pupils who
have applied to be Healing
Helpers. The Year 9 pupils have
been given some informal training
on dealing with issues that may
arise with pupils and are fully
aware of the issues that they need
to refer onto a staff member for
further advice and support.
There is also an email system that
pupils can use if they prefer:
This is an excellent service
provided by the pupils which gives
them the responsibility to support
their peers. For those attending
for support it is valuable to be
understood and listened to by
other pupils who may have been
through similar experiences
themselves.
Healing Helpers is open every
lunchtime from 12.10 to 13.10
in the room next to Mrs Croft’s
office, where two members of the
team will be present for pupils wishing to access
the service.
Geography Globetrotters
Update
During this half term,
Globetrotters, the
Healing School
Geography Club have
been learning about
where we live.
Pupils were asked to
create their own collage
or brochure using images, postcards and newspaper reports.
The pupils researched about their family life, their home town
and the activities in their area. Here are some of the globe
trotting pupils with their display of work in the background. Mr McCrae
The Children's Commissioner's
Takeover
Challenge
The takeover is a
hugely successful
children and young
people’s engagement
project which sees
organisations across
the UK opening their
doors to young
people, allowing them
to gain experience in
adult roles.
It puts children and
young people into
decision-making
positions and
encourages
organisations and
businesses to hear their
views. Children gain an
insight into the adult
world and organisations
benefit from a fresh
perspective about their
work.
Year 11 pupil Alfie
Hallett (Deputy Member
of Youth Parliament for
North East Lincolnshire)
visited North East
Lincolnshire Council for
the day. He explored
the role of Deputy Chief
Executive and attended
several meetings. Alfie
was able to meet council
workers from different
directorates and hear
their views on current
issues.
Camps International
Borneo Trip Update
Regular readers will know that
Year 11 and 12 pupils are visiting
Borneo next summer to take part
in community projects organised
by expedition specialists, Camps
International.
Flights are now booked and the pupils
are well on their way to raising their
individual £4,000 target to fund their
trip.
Mrs Plant visited Borneo during the
autumn half term, for reconnaissance
and to prepare for the arrival of the
students.
The school has supported pupils by
holding a number of events; £220 was
raised from the donation of unwanted
clothes earlier in the year. We intend
to repeat this exercise in the new year,
so please keep hold of any unwanted
items to donate to the school in 2016.
Mrs Plant has also been working with
the pupils, making Christmas
decorations, cards and cake pops, to
sell at the annual staff craft event.
We are also planning on holding a prize
bingo evening in school in February.
If anyone would like to donate a prize
for the bingo, this would be much
appreciated. Please give bingo prizes
to Mrs Ranyard, or hand in at the
school office.
Mrs Ranyard
This term Healing Primary school held a Science Day
event, in which all lessons were entirely dedicated to
science.
By working with our science department, they arranged a
Crime Scene Investigation day. All students took part and
the focus was to look into what it would be like to be
involved in the CSI. A whole range of activities was on
offer, including Chromatography, which involved analysing
the different colours in various pens which enabled the
pupils to match a pen to a ransom note.
Pupils really enjoyed being able to analyse their own finger
prints, plus they had to solve the case and ‘Catch the
Culprit’.
Healing Science Academy provided the microscopes and
the pupils had the opportunity to look closely at various
objects they couldn’t normally see.
It was a very enjoyable for both students and staff.

Healing Christmas Concert
The Christmas Concert this year
consisted a range of year groups
involved from Year 7 to Year 11.
The pupils and the school's choir performed
their own arrangements of classics, such
as: 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas',
Jingle Bells, 'Fairytale of New York' and 'All
I Want For Christmas'. The pupils conducted
themselves with professionalism throughout
the concert and the backstage and lighting
crew were fantastic. Over 120 people
attended the evening and an enjoyable
evening was had by all.
Many thanks go to all the staff and students
who were involved in making the evening
successful and to those who supported the
event.
See you at the summer recital!

Impressive Skills Shown By Year 8
Girls Netball Team
Well done to the year 8 Netball team who came an
impressive 2nd position in the Grimsby and District
Netball Tournament on Tuesday 8th December.
All of the girls have improved their game and played
some fantastic netball. We saw some impressive shooting
from Anna Lisztovszki (back row, second left) and Millie
Magson. Well done girls.
Mrs Yeadon
Key Stage 3 Girls Badminton
Champions.
Three teams from Key Stage 3
competed at the annual Grimsby and
District Badminton tournament.
The girls all played incredibly well, used
great tactics and never gave up on any
point. There were some fantastic rallies
and close games, but every Healing pupil
showed great determination. The three
teams finished in 4th, 3rd and 1st place
which was a fantastic achievement. This
event has been won by the same school
every year since the competition began
which makes winning this competition
even more impressive for Healing School.
The winning Team, who will now go on to
represent the district in the Humber finals,
were (L-R) Anna Lisztovszki, Millie
Magson, Stephanie Skelton and Abigail
Brady. Well done girls.
Miss Sass
Indoor Cricket Tournament
Year 7 & 8 boys came 2nd in the indoor
cricket tournament, losing the final by 14
runs. They played brilliantly throughout
and adapted to the new game really well.
They won both group games against
Wintringham and Havelock so made the
final against Toll Bar.
Mr Blockley
Swimming Team Swim to Success
It was another fabulous year for Healing schools
swimming team, during our last ever gala at
Grimsby swimming pool.
Overall squad captains of Amber Harris and Adam
Nadin led from the front with fantastic effort and
enthusiasm, with Alex Lynn and Jess Skelton both
achieving well as captains of the years 10 and 11
teams.
Our year 7 boys team came away with the winner’s
trophy, and managed to not drop a single point.
Special mention must go to Harvey Harris, for his
assistance during training and with the organisation of
swimmers. Ellie Buxton (year 9 girls captain) lead her
team to the winner’s trophy, with fantastic efforts in
all events – the encouragement reached an all-time
high with these fantastic girls.
Year 8 boys team also came away victorious with the
winner’s trophy, with exceptional swims from Will
Gale (who did not stop smiling for the whole event)
and Alex Woods.
Due to a massive points difference, our 2015 team
also came home with the overall boys champions
trophy, which should give us a great level of
momentum to put forward into next year’s event.
Many thanks to all that swam, we were exceptionally
proud of you.
Mrs Stead
Year 9 Pupils’ Biscuit Decorating
Competition
Year 9 food technology
pupils had a fun afternoon
designing and creating
festive biscuits.
For homework, the pupils were
given a recipe to bake a batch
of biscuits, then brought them
in to lesson to decorate them.
Mrs Bell and Mrs Watcham
then had the task of choosing
a winner, which proved
difficult! Rebekah Johnston was
the overall winner, with a 3D
Christmas tree creation.

The Healing teams did
exceptionally well at the
Cross Country event and
showed great
determination and
character to complete a
gruelling course.
The year 7 boys and year 8

another dominant display at the North East
Lincolnshire Schools KS3 badminton
tournament.
The winners, Healing ‘A Team’ of Josh McCloud, Ben
Smith, Nathan Sharpe and Ethan Hall won all their
matches and beat Humberston in the final. They
now go on to represent North East Lincolnshire in
Hull for the regional finals in February.
In the KS4 tournament, the Healing team of Adam
Parker, Jacob Roberts, Jordan Brader and Tom
Armitage came within 2 points of winning the
