SANTACLARA,Calif.,July27,2016–IntelSecurity,inpartnershipwiththeCenterforStrategicandInternationalStudies(CSIS),hasjustreleasedHackingtheSkillsShortage,aglobalreportoutliningthetalentshortagecrisisimpactingthecybersecurityindustryacrossbothcompaniesandnations.Amajorityofrespondents(82percent)admittoashortageofcybersecurityskills,with71percentofrespondentscitingthisshortageasresponsiblefordirectandmeasurabledamagetoorganizationswhoselackoftalentmakesthemmoredesirablehackingtargets.

“Ashortageofpeoplewithcybersecurityskillsresultsindirectdamagetocompanies,includingthelossofproprietarydataandIP,”saidJamesALewis,seniorvicepresidentanddirectoroftheStrategicTechnologiesProgramatCSIS.“Thisisaglobalproblem;amajorityofrespondentsinallcountriessurveyedcouldlinktheirworkforceshortagetodamagetotheirorganization.”

In2015,209,000cybersecurityjobswentunfilled intheUnitedStatesalone.Despite1in4respondentsconfirmingtheirorganizationshavelostproprietarydataasaresultoftheircybersecurityskillsgap,therearenosignsofthisworkforceshortageabatinginthenear-term.Respondentssurveyedestimateanaverageof15percentofcybersecuritypositionsintheircompanywillgounfilledby2020.Withtheincreaseincloud,mobilecomputingandtheInternetofThings,aswellasadvancedtargetedcyberattacksandcyberterrorismacrosstheglobe,theneedforastrongercybersecurityworkforceiscritical.

“Thesecurityindustryhastalkedatlengthabouthowtoaddressthestormofhacksandbreaches,butgovernmentandtheprivatesectorhaven’tbroughtenoughurgencytosolvingthecybersecuritytalentshortage,”saidChrisYoung,seniorvicepresidentandgeneralmanagerofIntelSecurityGroup.“Toaddressthisworkforcecrisis,weneedtofosterneweducationmodels,acceleratetheavailabilityoftrainingopportunities,andweneedtodeliverdeeperautomationsothattalentisputtoitsbestuseonthefrontline.Finally,weabsolutelymustdiversifyourranks.”

Thedemandforcybersecurityprofessionalsisoutpacingthesupplyofqualifiedworkers,withhighlytechnicalskillsthemostinneedacrossallcountriessurveyed.Infact,skillssuchasintrusiondetection,securesoftwaredevelopmentandattackmitigationwerefoundtobefarmorevaluedthansofterskillsincludingcollaboration,leadershipandeffectivecommunication.

Thisreportstudiesfourdimensionsthatcomprisethecybersecuritytalentshortage,whichinclude:

1. CybersecuritySpending:Thesizeandgrowthofcybersecuritybudgetsrevealshowcountriesandcompaniesprioritizecybersecurity.Unsurprisingly,countriesandindustrysectorsthatspendmoreoncybersecurityarebetterplacedtodealwiththeworkforceshortage,whichaccordingto71percentofrespondents,hasresultedindirectandmeasureabledamagetotheirorganization’ssecuritynetworks.

2. EducationandTraining:Only23percentofrespondentssayeducationprogramsarepreparingstudentstoentertheindustry.Thisreportrevealsnon-traditionalmethodsofpracticallearning,suchashands-ontraining,gaming

andtechnologyexercisesandhackathons,maybeamoreeffectivewaytoacquireandgrowcybersecurityskills.MorethanhalfofrespondentsbelievethatthecybersecurityskillsshortageisworsethantalentdeficitsinotherITprofessions,placinganemphasisoncontinuouseducationandtrainingopportunities.

3. EmployerDynamics:Whilesalaryisunsurprisinglythetopmotivatingfactorinrecruitment,otherincentivesareimportantinrecruitingandretainingtoptalent,suchastraining,growthopportunitiesandreputationoftheemployer’sITdepartment.Almosthalfofrespondentscitelackoftrainingorqualificationsponsorshipascommonreasonsfortalentdeparture.

4. GovernmentPolicies:Morethanthree-quarters(76percent)ofrespondentssaytheirgovernmentsarenotinvestingenoughinbuildingcybersecuritytalent.ThisshortagehasbecomeaprominentpoliticalissueasheadsofstateintheU.S.,U.K.,IsraelandAustraliahavecalledforincreasedsupportforthecybersecurityworkforceinthelastyear.

Methodology

IntelcommissionedindependenttechnologymarketresearchspecialistVansonBournetoundertaketheresearchuponwhichthisreportisbased.ITdecision-makerswhoareinvolvedincybersecuritywithintheirorganizationwereinterviewedinMay2016acrosstheU.S.(200),U.K.(100),France(100),Germany(100),Australia(75),Japan(75),Mexico(75)andIsrael(50).Therespondentswerefromorganizationswithatleast500employees,andcamefromwithinbothpublicandprivatesectors.Interviewswereconductedonlineusingarigorousmultilevelscreeningprocesstoensurethatonlysuitablecandidateshadtheopportunitytoparticipate.
