Soup’s On!Soup’s On!Soup’s On!
National Soup Month was celebrated during the chilly temperatures of January. Life Enrichment selected special recipes and took suggestions from team members to plan out the month. Every Wednesday afternoon a special soup was served and displayed on the hospitality bar for all to try. The soups enjoyed were Potato Bacon, Taco, Cheesy Chicken Bacon and Italian Soup. This fantastic treat has been something to look forward to every week! Team member Cindy DeLance commented, “The Creamy Chicken Bacon
soup was my absolute favorite! It was fun hearing residents and team members rave about
the different flavors we were offered each week”. Life Enrichment concluded celebrating National Soup Month by hosting a Men’s Soup Luncheon. Volunteer Mike Jacobs coordinated and invited men from the community to enjoy the meal with the residents. “It was so nice to see so many community members join us for the soup!” commented Deb Jones, Life Enrichment Coordinator. The menu consisted of Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup, Vegetable Beef Stew, copycat Texas Road House buns and cinnamon butter. The meal was topped off with delicious Chocolate Caramel Poke Cake.

Administrator’s Corner
Greetings! This month we are rejuvenating our focus on team member training to help enhance the Shady Oaks experience for our residents, patients, family members, and the community. Specifically, we are focusing on three areas at this time, as follows. ●Dealing with Resident Death—Our team members get very close to our residents and many of them become like family to us! We help them with their needs, listen to their joys and concerns, and have fun with our residents! When one starts to decline, this can be very difficult for team members that have formed a bond with that resident. Although we do have our Bedside Memorials to help loved ones and friends gain closure, it is still not easy. Shady Oaks is partnering with our Employee Assistance Program, Insight, to present a program this month as to how to deal with resident death. Although we know it will not ease the pain, our hope is that perspective is gained and gives team members ways to cope. ●Dementia Training— While there are so many other diseases and illnesses out there, the state of Iowa requires us to provide 8 hours of dementia training to our team members on an annual basis. Research shows that even though a resident may not live in a specialized “dementia household”, approximately 60% + of nursing home residents have some form of dementia. For 2017, we have created a dynamic array of educational sessions for our team members to take part in throughout the year. From video, to live presentation, our goal is to continue to provide innovative and useful tools for team members to take back and use on the job. ●Take Time to Care—The Vetter Foundation has recently updated the “Take Time to Care” training, and as a co-instructor with People Development Coordinator Kate Smith, we are super excited to once again offer this program whose goal is to instruct and inspire team members to provide quality care for our elderly. This day-long seminar will be offered to approximately a dozen team members at a time, and we will continue it through 2017 and even into 2018 and beyond as new team members are hired.

The Iowa/Nebraska RivalryThe Iowa/Nebraska RivalryThe Iowa/Nebraska Rivalry
“A little friendly competition never hurt anyone…,” but if you ask Kate Smith, she may beg to differ! The rivalry between Kate Smith (Shady Oaks Care Center, People Development Coordinator) and Dan Schock (VHS Clinical Leadership Development) began when Dan started visiting Shady Oaks Care Center. On a Casual Jean Friday, Kate proudly wore black and gold in honor of her beloved Hawkeyes for the upcoming football game. Dan, being a true Husker fan, was APPALLED by Kate’s choice of attire and thus a rivalry between the two was born.
Throughout the 2016 football season Dan and Kate would discuss the teams ups and downs whenever Dan was in the great state of Iowa visiting Shady Oaks. The two would go back and forth about what team was better. Ultimately though, that decision would be made when the Hawkeyes and Huskers went head to head at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City on Friday, November 25th. Dan was silenced when the Hawkeyes DOMINATED the Huskers with a final score of 40-10. Both teams
succeeded in playing in bowl games, but were both unsuccessful in their attempts. After the Hawkeyes tragic bowl game loss to the Florida Gators in the Outback Bowl, Dan waged a friendly bet with Kate. The Hawkeyes and Huskers were scheduled to hit the hardwood in a basketball game on January 5th. If the Hawkeyes won, Dan had to don black and gold on his next visit
to Iowa, and if the Huskers won Kate had to sport scarlet and cream.
It was a hard fought battle between the two teams. The game went into DOUBLE OVERTIME. The Huskers came out on top by only three points.
We then come to January 19, 2017. Kate wore a color combination she had never worn before and hopes to never have to wear again. Needless to say her skin itched just a
little that whole day…

A Brewing Good Time!A Brewing Good Time!A Brewing Good Time! One thing our team members share at Shady Oaks is a love for coffee, so we decided to do something special and host a coffee bar featuring flavored Starbucks K-Cups and creamers. In fun eco-friendly to-go cups, team members had fun whipping up their coffee to give them a boost for the day. The “cups of joe,” paired with a crunchy biscotti, were offered for a free will donation in Shady Oaks’ efforts to raise $1000 before June. “The Vetter Foundation has once again challenged us to raise funds for a non-profit
community organization,” said Administrator Jennifer Blair. “Once we have met our goal (through various fundraisers), we will choose who will be the recipient and then the Vetter Foundation will give us matching funds for that organization. It’s really exciting to think that what we are doing here will help an organization in need with a $2000 gift!”

Administrator’s Corner Continued I truly feel that investing this time and energy into education and knowledge for our team will not only give them excellent resources to look back when situations arise, but also show each of them that they are valued and appreciated. One other area of interest I wanted to share with you is that we have recently completed our Hospice Room remodel. Several months ago the choice was made to move the Hospice Room (reserved for those residents in their final days) from the Monroe Neighborhood next to the nurse’s station, up to the Adams Neighborhood room 107. Our hope is that this is area of comfort and serenity, with more privacy and greater access to anything a family may need at the end of life.
The time following the death of a resident is very delicate, not only for the resident’s family but also for our team members that have loved the resident as much as their own sibling, parent or grandparent. How do we (as team members, fellow residents, and friends) care and show our sorrows, as well as experience some sort of closure? As a 24/7 care facility, many of us are unable to attend a visitation or funeral service for our friend and have unexpressed feelings and sympathies for the resident’s family. For that reason, Shady Oaks has offered the “Bedside Memorial Service, Dignity in Life and Beyond”. The Bedside Memorial Service takes place following the death of a resident, unless the resident or family requests otherwise. It is led by a team member, family or clergy, with team members, family and other residents being given an opportunity to participate in the service. There is time allowed during the service to share memories and thoughts about our departed friend. We have had the opportunity to say goodbye to many residents over the years in this way, with a positive response from the residents’ families as well as team members who receive closure for those they have so tenderly cared for. All team members and residents that want to participate are also given the immediate opportunity to give their condolences to the resident’s family and not feel like they are “bothering them” as they grieve. Another practice we have alongside the Bedside Memorial Service is the placing of a delicate white spread and rose on the resident’s bed and a “Dove Sign” on the resident’s door after the resident and family have departed. While it signifies that our friend has passed on, it also gives a sense of tranquility in that person’s absence instead of an empty bed that the family must look at when they come to pick up their loved one’s belongings. The rose may be left on the bed or the family is invited to take it as a special remembrance. We hope that these practices will continue to represent our overall mission of Dignity in Life, and give our team members and other residents a proper way to say goodbye to a beloved friend.
