Airline Industry This industry is used to transport people and freight There are types and sizes of aircrafts These industry work for domestic and international
customers This industry generates a considerable amount of
revenue It plays a major role in
Economic Growth World Trade International Investment Tourism
British Airlines Was found in the year 31st March 1974 Operates across globe It is UK’s largest airline Commuting to more than 550 destinations
and to various airports Has number of subsidiary companies Carries passengers and cargo Types of fleet
Boeing Airbus
Services offered by British Airways E-Ticketing Online Check-in Mobile and PDA services On board entertainment Fleet facts Route maps
Technologies Discussed Audio and Video on Demand (AVOD) Two dimensional bar technology
Audio and Video On Demand British Airways uses “Rockwell and Collins” TES (Total
Entertainment System) Is a part of Inflight entertainment system Passenger can listen or watch digital file using this
technology Can watch
Movies TV shows Factual programs View outside the aircraft
Can Listen to Music Announcement Radio
Characteristic of AVOD Allows user to choose the media files Acts like a TV sets where passengers can
Play Pause Stop and Control the volume
Supports concurrent users Compactable with other services of IFE like
Internet Games
Characteristic of AVOD Has two states “Weight On Wheels” and “Weight Off
wheels” This service starts when the state is “Weight Off
wheels” This service stops when the state is “Weight On
wheels” Pauses all the play back while forced broadcasting
and resumes when the broadcasting is over Two types of broad casting
Flight Announcement and Passenger Announcement (Flight Announcement
overrides Passenger Announcement)
Characteristic of AVOD Ensures the clarity of Audio and Video
files Supports “Decompression State” Supports Portable Audio/Video
devices Has ability to generate Reports
Components of AVOD Digital media server (DMS) Primary Access Terminal (PAT) Secondary Access Terminal (SAT) Audio Visual Unit (AVU) Seat Display Unit (SDU) Passenger Control Unit (PCU) Over Head display Unit (OHDU) Headset jack Portable devices
Implementation The DMS stores all the digital Media files This is connected to the seats with the help
of AVU The PAT controls all the seat activities PAT is used to
Select the files and services available to seat or a group of seats
Restart the seat Generate reports Announcements can be made
PAT
Implementation SDU displays the interface and the
video PCU is used to choose a digital file
and to traverse through the interface The headphones are plugged into the
headset jack The OHDU is used to display the video
or information that has been broadcasted
Benefits of AVOD Adds a greater value to the organization The organization possess competitive
advantage by implementing AVOD Keeps the passengers occupied in long haul
flight Increases revenue Marketing their products Promote safety Generate Reports
Two Dimensional Bar Technology
Invented by Japanese corporation in 1994. It enable to encrypt personal and secret
information into some kind of unreadable bar.
Encrypt the information with the help of Elliptic Curve Cryptography.
Two Dimensional Bar Technology
This bar code can be send to various hand held device such as mobile phone, PDA etc.
This technology uses 163 bit of data to encrypt the message.
Uses digital signature to ensure more security in the bar code.
Characteristic of Mobile Bar Technology Enable user to receive ticket via their
mobile phone or PDA. Act like ordinary ticket for traveling
purpose. Message can be sent to any mobile phone
capable of receiving Picture message. Improve the efficiency of delivery, flight
time update and boarding process. Impact on environment.
Implementation Airline send encrypted message to
the passenger’s mobile or PDA. This message is in the form of bar
code. Customer produces this encrypted
message at the time of check-in.
Implementation This message is decrypted and recognized
by a device in airport. This decrypted message reveal information
about the passenger and his travel. Device used to recognizes the encrypted
message: IATA 2D Bar Code (PDF 417) for Internet and
CUSS. Unisys Mobile Boarding Pass. Unisys Quick Service PointUnisys.
Benefits of 2D bar technology Result in organizational growth up to $500
million. Enable self service to check in and boarding
aircraft. Simplify the process. Make direct communication between airline
and customer. Save time. Reduce the congestion of passenger at the
counter.
Benefits of 2D bar technology Achieve cost saving by one to one
marketing. Reduces the number of paper and
resources used at airport. Better customer relationship. It increases customer privacy and
security.
Conclusion These technologies adds value to the
industry and organization Has competitive advantage Attracts customers and generates
revenue The process and time consumed is
reduced Assists the growth of the Industry and
organization
