Purpose
OurresearchexaminestheOrganizationalIdentitytheoryandhowitshapesourstudy
withspecificstudents’satisfactorylevelspertainingtotheirexperiencewiththeeducation
offeredatSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale(SIUC).Thepurposeofthisresearchisto
studyfromanOrganizationalIdentityperspective:theexpectationsandperceptionsof
studentspriortoattendingSIUC,whatgoesonwithinstudents’educationalprogramsthatare
offeredatSIUC,andstudentsoveralllevelsofsatisfactionafteratleasttwofullyearsof
experiencewithSIUCanditseducationalprograms.
OrganizationalIdentity
Theidentityofanorganizationiswhatdifferentiatesitselffromotherorganizations.
Organizationscanbedefinedandrecognizedfromvariousformsofidentity,suchas
trademarks,logos,brands,names,etc.Theyarethesourcesindefiningitsoverallcharacteras
awhole.Identityiswhattransformsanorganization’sexistencebecausetheheartofan
organizationisitsidentitytothepubliceye.“OrganizationalIdentityisthesharedbeliefsof
membersaboutthecentral,enduringanddistinctivecharacteristicsoftheorganization‐
constitutespartofthesharedmeaningsheldbythemembers”(Biddle&Rao,1997,p.594).
UnderstandingOrganizationalIdentityisimportanttothesustainabilityoforganizations.
Thetheoryhasthreekeycomponentsinaddressingorganizations.First,thetheoryexamines
andexplainsactionswithinanorganization,suchasthepurposeforanorganizationtoexistand
whyitisimportantthatitexist.Second,itidentifiestheorganization’srolesforitsmembers
depictingwhattheydofortheorganization,andhowtheyperformthetaskstoupholdthe

organizationinterprettheissuesandroleswithinthatorganization,aswellashowitsmembers
respondtothoseissuesandroles.
Specifics
OrganizationalIdentityisimportanttoourresearchpertainingtothesatisfactionrateof
studentswiththeireducationalprogramatSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale.Primarily,
theknowledgeofOrganizationalIdentityhelpsorganizationsgoaboutconflictingchanges,and
bythedegreesofsatisfaction,changecanillustratethefinalwayanorganization’sidentityis
perceived.OurresearchwillbeexaminingtheOrganizationalIdentitytheory,andhowit
shapesourstudywithspecificstudents’satisfactorylevelspertainingtotheirexperiencewith
SouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’seducationalprograms.Throughtheresearchof
OrganizationalIdentity,weareabletoaccommodatetheaccurateunderstandingsingathering
andreceivingliableresultsabouttheeducationofferedatSouthernIllinoisUniversity
Carbondale.
ResearchQuestions
ThroughthestudyofOrganizationalIdentity,aconceptualquestionwasdevelopedin
ordertonarrowtheprocessandresultsofourresearch.SinceourresearchofOrganizational
Identityprimarilycenteredontheconceptofthethreecomponentsthatconstructsthetheory
asawhole,ourmainconceptualresearchquestionwasbasedonallofOrganizationalIdentity’s
threeparts.
1. Howdostudents’overallperceptionsofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’seducationdevelopfromthethreestagesofentrywithinOrganizationalIdentity?

However,sinceaconceptofOrganizationalIdentitytheoryisthatitisdividedintothree
components,wenarrowedthisquestion,withinnumericalorder,intothreeadditionalparts:
pre‐entrystage,entrystage,andpost‐entrystage.
1. HowdoesSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondalepersuadestudents’toattenditseducationalprogramsthroughtheuseofapplicationattributes?
2. HowdothedifferentfeaturesandmembersofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’sOrganizationalIdentitydifferentiatefromstudenttostudentwithinthediverseeducationalprogramsanditsprofessionaleducators?
3. Howhavestudents’previousexperienceswithintheir
educationalprogramscontributedtotheiroveralllevelsofsatisfactionforSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale?
ResearchProcedure
Ourteamconductedourresearchthroughmultipleways,alsoknownastriangulation.
Wefirst,conductedfourfocusgroupsthatconsistedof6to12individualswhohavehadtwo
yearsormoreofeducationalexperienceatSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale.Eachgroup
discussionwasethicallyvalidatedandunderstoodthroughtheuseofinformedconsentforms
(SeeAppendixA).Throughthefocusgroupfindings,asurveywasthenconstructedinorderto
furtherassistourresearchfindings.
MethodologicalJustification
Surveyresearchwasjustifiedinourresearchprocedurebecauseofitsmanymethodsof
askingdifferenttypesofquestions.Throughthesurveyresearch,openandclosedquestions
werecreatedinordertobettermeasure,analyze,andinterpretourconceptualquestions
accuratelyformorevalidresults.

SurveyConstructionProcess
Thesurveywasconstructedintotwoparts:questionspertainingtoreturningSIUC
students,andaseparatesetofquestionspertainingtoSIUCalumni.Bothdemographicswere
askedasetofsimilarquestions.However,throughfocusgroupfindings,therewasan
understandingthatpost‐entryresultswouldnotbeaccuratelyvalidatedthroughstudentsstill
attendingSIUC.InordertoresearchthethreestagesofOrganizationalIdentitytheoryand
studentssatisfactionwithSIUC’seducationaccurately,thesurveyswouldneedtoresearchSIUC
alumniseparatelysincetheytrulyhavepost‐entryresultswithSIUCanditsOrganizational
Identity.
SurveyProcedure
Ourresearchwaslimitedtoasetofspecificdemographics,toaccuratelyreceivevalid
answersattainingtoourconceptualquestionsforourresearch.Thesedemographicscauseda
moreselectiveapproachinchoosingindividualsforthesurvey.Therefore,weusedamore
stratifiedpurposivesampleinordertoobtainoursurveyresearchfindings.Wedidthisby
choosingtheindividualsthatmatchedthespecificdemographicstandardswithineachofthe
differentcollegesunderSIUC.Thisopenedthedoorforrecognizingifstudents’perceptionsof
theireducationofferedfromSIUCvariedwithinthedifferentcollegesunderSIUC,orifthere
wasaconsensusthroughouttheuniversity.
SamplePopulation
Thestudentparticipantschosenforourresearchwereselectedbyspecific
demographicsthroughouttheindividualcollegesundertheuniversity.Theprimary
demographicswererequiredtohaveatleasttwoyearsormoreofexperienceatSIUC.Thiswas

particularlyimportantbecauseexperienceismeasuredbytime,therefore,timemustbespent
atSIUCinordertofullymeasureanindividualssatisfactionattheuniversity.Also,becauseof
thetwo‐yearexperienceexpectancy,beforetakingthesurvey,studentswererequiredtohave
ajuniororseniorstatus,and/orgraduatedfromSIUCafteratleasttwoyearsofexperience.
Wewereabletocollect40returningSIUCjuniorandseniorparticipants,and40SIUCalumni
participants,80participantstotaled.Allparticipantsstudied,classifiedthemselvesaseither
maleorfemale,andvariedinagefrom20to59yearsold.However,theprimaryageof
returningSIUCparticipantswas21,whiletheprimaryageoftheSIUCalumniwas23.
Analysis/Results
DuringthisresearchthealumniofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondalewereaskedto
ratetheireducationalexperienceatSIUCalongwiththereturningjuniorsandseniorsofthe
university.BothsetofsurveysfromreturningSIUCstudentsandSIUCalumniwerecrucialin
thoroughlyanalyzingallthreestagesofOrganizationalIdentity.TheanalyzingofdataforSIUC
alumniwasessentialinobtainingaccurateresultsregardingthetheory’sfinalstage,post‐entry.
BothreturningSIUCstudentsandSIUCalumniwereaskedtorate,onascaleofoneto
ten,theirexpectationsofSIUCbeforeenrollingwithintheuniversity.Accordingtoresearch
findingsmanystudentsseemtohavemoderatelyhighexpectations.Returningstudentsfrom
theCollegeofAgriculturalSciencesandtheCollegeofEngineeringhadthehighestexpectations
ratesof80percent.ThelowestratingofSIUCpriortostudentsattendingwasfromstudentsof
theCollegeofAppliedSciencesandArtswith50percent.
Pertainingtothequestionmentionedabove,whenSIUCalumniwereaskedtorespond
theCollegeofEducationandHumanServicesgavethehighestratingof90percent.

ImmediatelyfollowingthatwastheCollegeofAgriculturalScienceswith80percent.Very
similartothereturningstudentsthelowestexpectationscamefromthecollegeofApplied
SciencesandArtswith50percent.
Whentryingtofind,whataboutSIUC’seducationmostcontributedtotheknowledge
pertainingtoreturningSIUCjuniorsandseniorsdegrees,therewasatotalof40studentsbut41
answers.Thisoccurredbecausethesurveyneverspecifiedonlyoneanswerperquestion.
Therefore,30outof40(75%)ofthereturningSIUCstudentssaidteacherswerewhatmost
contributedtotheirknowledgeabouttheirdegree.While,10outof40(25%)saiditwasthe
resourcesattheuniversitythatcontributedtotheknowledgeabouttheirdegree.Finally,the
oneextraanswercamefromastudentintheCollegeofLiberalArtsandtheyrespondedwith
theoptionchoice,“other,”andspecified,“practicalexperiences,”contributedthemosttotheir
knowledgeabouttheirdegree.
WhenalsolookingatwhataboutSIUC’seducationmostcontributedtotheknowledge
ofthedegreesobtainedbySIUCalumni,therewasatotalof40participants,but45total
answers.Withbothdemographicsansweringmorethanoneoption,endedupshowingthis
wasagoodthingbecauseitshowedstudentsdidnotlimitSIUCtojustonething,theyfeltSIUC
offeredmorethanonecontributor.Therefore,26outof40(65%)ofthealumnisaidteachers
werewhatmostcontributedtotheirknowledgeabouttheirdegree.While,14outof40(35%)
saiditwastheresourcesattheuniversitythatmostcontributedtotheirknowledgeabouttheir
degree.Only,3outof40(8%)saidthecomputertechnologyavailabilitycontributedtotheir
knowledgeabouttheirdegree,andfinally2out40(5%)saiditwasotherthingsthat
contributedtotheknowledgeabouttheirdegree.

The40returningjuniorsandseniorswerethenaskedwhathadthelargestaffecton
theirselectionofamajorattheuniversity.Thelargestamountofstudents,26outof40(65%),
saidthattheirownpersonalinterestinthesubjecthadthebiggestaffectontheirdegree
selection.While,6outof40(15%)ofreturningstudentsansweredthatitwastheirfriends
opinionthatinfluencedtheirdegreeselection,4outof40(10%)answeredthatfuture
paychecksarewhatinfluencedtheirdegreeselection,and3outof40(8%)saidtheirparents
hadthelargestaffectontheirselectionoftheirchosenmajor.Finally,oneindividualfromthe
CollegeofEducationandHumanServicessaidasuggestionfromtheiradvisoriswhataffected
theirdecision.
The40SIUCalumniwerethenalsoaskedwhathadthelargestaffectontheirselection
ofamajorattheuniversity.Thelargestamountofalumni,24outof40(60%)saidthattheir
ownpersonalinterestinsubjecthadthebiggestaffectontheirdegreeselection.While,10out
of40(25%)answeredthatitwastheirparent’sopinionthathadthelargestaffectontheir
sectionofamajor,3outof40(8%)saidtheirfriend’sopinioniswhatinfluencedtheirdegree
selection,andatiewith1outof40(3%)answeredthatfuturepaychecksandasuggestionfrom
theiradvisorhelpedaffecttheirdegreesselections.
Thesame40returningstudentswerethenaskedtoratetheirclasseswithintheir
degree.Studentswereaskedtocheckoneoftheoptions:always,mostthetime,hardlyever,
ornever.“Ifeelexcitedaboutclassprojects/assignments”wasthefirstscenario;53%ofthe
returningstudentsansweredmostofthetime,while23%saidalways,20%answeredhardly
ever,and5%answerednever.Thenextscenariowas,“Igotoclasseveryday.”Thehighest
answerchosenwasat55%,answeringmostofthetime,33%answeredalways,and13%said

assignments”wasthefirstscenario.63%ofthealumniansweredmostofthetimewhile23%

wasselectedthemajority;foreveryscenarioforthereturningstudentsaswellasthealumni,
onecanseethatthepaststudentsaswellasthepresentsstudentsareforthemostpart
averagecollegestudents.Insomeareasthestudentsmayhavefallenshortorwentaboveand
beyondbutthestudentswhocompletedthesesurveysareasamplegroupofaverageeveryday
studentsattheuniversity.
Afterratingdifferentoptionspertainingtotheclasseswithinreturningstudentsdegree,
returningjuniorsandseniorswerethenaskedtoratedifferentoptionsaccordingtotheir
personalopinionabouttheirteachers.Thesearethescenariosandresponsestothequestion
beginningas,myteachersare:“Greataboutgivinggoodassignments/classproject”:70%

Thistooisidenticaltothereturningjuniorsandsenior’sresponses.Afterreviewingtheresults
onecanseethattheteacher’satSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondaleareviewedbytheSIUC
alumniasgood/greatteachers.Thefactthatsomeoftheanswerswereidenticalbetween
returningstudentsandalumni,showthatthereistruthtothefactthatteachersatSIUCare
preparedandveryclear,sothatstudentsareabletounderstandthem.
Duringourresearchstudentswerethenaskedtoratetheireducationalexperienceat
SIUC.Overallreturningjuniorandseniorsratedtheuniversitywitha74%.Thehighestrating
camefromtheCollegeofAppliedSciencesandArtswitharatingof100percent.TheCollegeof
AppliedSciencesandArtswasthecollegethathadthelowestexpectationsfortheuniversity
priortoattending.TheCollegesofAgriculturalSciences,Engineering,andEducationofHuman
Servicesallgavearatingwithinthe80‐percentilerange.Thelowestrankingcamefromthe
CollegeofScience,whichgavearankingof63%,thisrankingdropped14%from77%,whichis
whattheyratedtheirexpectationsoftheuniversitypriortoattending.
Duringourresearchthealumniwerealsoaskedtoratetheireducationalexperience
whileattendingSIUC.Overall,theSIUCalumniratedtheuniversitywitha77%.Thiswas3%
higherthenwhatthereturningstudentsgaveSIUC.Thehighestratingscamefromalumniwho
graduatedfromtheCollegesofAgriculturalSciences,andEducationandHumanServiceswitha
ratingof90%.ThelowestratingcamefromtheCollegeofArtandDesign.Theirratingwent
downfromtheirexpectationratingof68%to43%,whichwasa25%drop.Allthecollegeswent

upintheirratingsfromtheirexpectationsexceptfortheCollegeofArtandDesignandthe
CollegeofEducationandHumanServices,whichstayedthesame.
Thenextquestiononthesurveyaskedthereturningjuniorsandseniorstofilloutand
ratethedifferentoptionsaccordingtotheirpersonalopinions.Thefirstoptionsstated,“Ihad
highexpectationsabouttheuniversitypriortoenrollment”:43%answeredAgree,30%
answeredstronglyagreed,25%answeredneutraland3%disagreed.Thenextoptionstated,

Afterlookingatthereturningstudent’squestion14results,itcanbedeterminedthat
mostoftheparticipantsareataconsensuswiththeanswerchoice“agree”.Forthemostpart,
theparticipantsaresatisfiedwiththeireducationalprogramsatSIUCthisfar.However,with
thestudentsfromtheCollegeofLiberalArtsandtheCollegeofScience,thereisacomparison
contradictionbetweenquestions13and14.Whenaskedtoratetheoptionsinquestion14,

theirexpectationsratings.Contradictoryisapparentwhen9outof12liberalartsstudents
answered,“agree”fortheoption,“Sofar,SIUChaspreparedanddevelopedmeintoagrowing
professionalwithinmydegree.”Contradictoryisalsoapparentwhen9peopleanswer,“agree,”
butinthenextoptiononly5people“agree”theyarehappywiththeirdecisiontocometoSIUC
toattaintheirdegree.
Question15,askedthereturningjuniorsandseniorsto,“Pleaserankthefollowingin
theorderofwhatthemostimportantthingandleastimportantthingyoucanacquirefrom
youreducationwithinyourmajor(s)atSIUC.(4)Beingthemostimportant,and(1)beingthe
leastofimportance.)”Outof156possiblepoints,“strongeducatedteachers”cameoutwith
thehighestpointsof110(71%).However,whenthealreadyemployedSIUCalumniwereasked
asimilarquestiontorankwhatmostcontributedandleastcontributedtothemacquiringajob

herebecauseinquestion15,confidence,istheleastimportantwithapercentageof53%.Also
whileconductingafocusgroup,confidencewasconsideredimportantbySIUCreturning
studentstoattain,butonceagainquestion15contradictsthisparticularanswer.

AlotoftheproblemsthatrecentSIUCalumniarepossiblyfacingwhiletryingtoobtaina
jobmaybecausedbytheeconomyoftheUnitedStates.Onthecontrary,thefactthat8%of
alumnididnotstatethattheireducationatSIUChelpedthemgetajobwithintheirchosen
degreedoesnotlookgoodonbehalfoftheuniversity.AlsoloweringSIUC’sgrade,33%of
alumnistronglyagreeand27%agreewiththeoptiononquestion16stating,“Mycoworkers
feelIamagreatassettotheirteam,butnothankstoSIUC,IhadtoteachmyselfwhatIknow
today.”OnapositivenoteforSIUC,whenquestion18askedalumni,“Whydoyoufeelyouhave
notreceivedajobwithinyourdegreeyet?”Theanswer“other”waschosenby35%ofalumni,
whowereeitheringradschool,lawschool,hadajob,butnotintheirdegreeorsimplybecause

fromalumniwhograduatedformtheCollegeofArtandDesign.TheCollegeofArtandDesign
said,“Thereneedstobemorepracticalexperienceoffered,andSIUC,ingeneral,needsto
improveandthereneedstobemorerealisticexpectations.”Lookingatquestion21,whichasks
alumni,“Isthereanythingelseyouwouldliketosharewithusinvolvingtheeducationoffered
atSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale?”57%ofalumni,75%beingalumnifromtheCollege
ofArtandDesign,respondedthat,“PersonallyIwouldnevercomeback.”
Afterlookingcloselyatthereturningstudentsresultsandalumni’sresultstheoverall
satisfactionofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondaleisa“fair”grade.Eventhoughonly38%
ofalumnihavejobswithintheirmajorthe,whichdideffectthesatisfactionrate,thealumni
ratedtheuniversitywitha77%.The77%givenbythealumniwas3%morethanthe74%
satisfactionrategivenbythereturningstudents.(Formoreinformationondataandresultssee
AppendixC,andforgraphchartsseeAppendixD).
Discussion
Afterdaysofanalyzingtheresultsandcorrelatingthedifferences,wewereableto
successfullyfindtheanswerstoourconceptualresearchquestions.
Answers
Asmentionedabovetheconceptualquestionwasdividedintothreepartspertainingto
theconceptofthethreecomponentsthatconstructOrganizationalIdentitytheorysuchas:pre‐
entrystage,entrystage,andpost‐entrystage.
Thequestionpertainingtopre‐entry,“HowdoesSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale
persuadestudents’toattenditseducationprogramsthroughtheuseofapplication

attributes?”wasconsistentlyansweredthesamethroughboththefocusgroupsessionsand
thesurveyresearch.The40returningSIUCstudentparticipantsprimarilyagreedby28percent
thereasontheyhadchosentocometoSIUCwerereasonspertainingtotheuniversitybeing
thefurthestfromhomewhilestillreceivinglowinstatetuition.Theuniversityexceedingly
marketsitselftopotentialstudentsinthenorthernareasofIllinoisasthecollegethatis,
“furthestfromhomewhilestillencompassingthelowestin‐statetuitionprice”.Sincethiswas
thereasoningmoststudentsfromtheNorthernIllinoisareasstatedwhytheychosetocometo
SIUC,theuniversityiseffectivelypersuadingstudentstoattendtheuniversitythroughtheuse
ofitsapplicationattributes.However,thequestiondoesspecifyhowSIUCpersuadesstudents’
toattendits,“educationprogramsthroughtheuseofapplicationattributes.”Accordingtothe
survey,therewasatiebetweentheoptions,“mymajorsprogram,”and,“Ijustwantedtocome
here,”with20percent,asthesecondmostchosenoptions.Although,65percentofreturning
SIUCstudentsand60percentofSIUCalumnistatedthiswasbecauseofa,“personalinterestin
subject,”therewerecommentsleftstatingdifferentprogramssuchas,CollegeofEngineering
andCollegeofBusiness,wererumoredtobestrongprogramsofferedbySIUC.
Thequestionpertainingtoentry,“Howdothedifferentfeaturesandmembersof
SouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’sOrganizationalIdentitydifferentiatefromstudentto
studentwithinthediverseeducationalprogramsanditsprofessionaleducators?”washighly
indicatedthroughthefocusgroupfindingsandsurveyresultsthateducationalprofessorsare
whatmostcontributedtothestudent’sknowledgeabouttheirdegree.Thiswasprovenwithin
oursurveyresearchthatmeasured,outofthe80participantscombined,70percentofthe
participantsanswered“teachers”aswhatmostcontributedtotheireducationalknowledge.

Sincewehadalreadyanticipatedthiswouldbethecase,thesurveymeasuredstudents’
perceptionsabouttheprofessor’sperformancewithintheirchosendegree.Themajorityofthe
80participantsanswers,regardingtheirprofessor’sperformanceswas,“mostofthetime”.
However,themajorityofreturningSIUCstudentsanswered,“always,”totheoptionsstating,
“Myteachersareknowledgeableaboutthefield(s)ofstudy,”and,“Myteachersareavailableto
talktoand/oraskforhelp”.ThiswasapositiveagreementpertainingtotheeducatorsofSIUC,
contributingtomorepositiveresultswithintheentrystageofOrganizationalIdentitytheory.
Thefinalquestionwithinthethreecomponentspertainingtopost‐entry,“Howhave
students’previousexperienceswithintheireducationalprogramscontributedtotheiroverall
levelsofsatisfactionforSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale?”wasprimarilyanswered
throughtheSIUCalumniparticipants.StudyingSIUC’sorganizationfromastudent’s
perspectiveallowsthethirdstageofOrganizationalIdentitytheorytoactuallyreflecton
previousexperienceswithinallthestagesafterleavingtheestablishment.Inthiscase,the
post‐entrystagewasprimarilycenteredoniftheywereeasilyabletoattainajobpost‐
graduation.However,becauseofthisprimaryreasoningintoenteringSIUCinthefirstplace,
thesewerethecauseofsomeveryunsatisfiedperspectivesamongthestudentswhohadnot
foundajobyet,comparedtothestudentswhodidhaveajobalready.However,thiswasnot
thecasewithinallthecollegesunderSIUC.TheCollegeofArtandDesignwasasignificant
variablewithinourfindingsthatwasacontradictiontoourdependentvariables.Eventhough
twooutofthefourparticipantsdidhavejobswithintheirchosendegree,theSIUCalumni’sof
theCollegeofArtandDesign,wereallveryunhappywiththeirdegreestheyhadreceivedfrom
SIUC.Thiswasshownthroughaconsistentamountofnegativeresponsesfromthesespecific
DoesSIUCGetanA?

participants,andevenmorefromtherespondentsthathavejobs.Theyfeltunprepared,
uneducated,inexperienced,unconfident,andbetrayedbySIUC’scommunicationdesign
programwithintheCollegeofArtandDesign.Onthecontrary,therewerealsospecific
alumni’swhoillustratedtheirexperienceatSIUCwasneutraltounsatisfying,butbecauseof
expectedfuturepaycheckstheygaveaboveaverageratings.Alotoftheseresultswerequite
shockingtoview,andledtoadditionalcuriositiesforfuturestudiesinvolvinguniversitieswithin
thethreecomponentsofOrganizationalIdentitytheory.
SinceourresearchofOrganizationalIdentityprimarilyrevolvedaroundtheconceptof
thethreecomponentsthatconstructsthetheoryasawhole,ourmainconceptualresearch
question,“Howdostudents’overallperceptionsofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’s
educationdevelopfromthethreestagesofentrywithinOrganizationalIdentity?”was
successfullyidentifiedthroughourresearch.Asmentionedabove,theconsistencyamongmost
students’answerswereshownthroughthethreestagesofOrganizationalIdentitytheory.Asin
mostcaseswhendealingwithresearchingtheories,notallresearchparticipantswillallowyour
resultstomatchperfectlybecauseofthedifferentpersonalitiesandperceptionsofstudents
priortotheirinvolvements.Asshownabove,withinthethreecomponentsofthemain
conceptualquestion,insuccessfullystudyingpriorstudiesaboutOrganizationalIdentitytheory,
theresearchwassuccessfullyconstructedtoacquirefindingswithinallthreestagesofthe
theoryregardingourspecificresearch.
Reconceptualization
OrganizationalIdentitytheoryisacomplextheorizationthathasmanyreasonsforits
successesandfailures.Primarily,membersarethecharacteristicsofanorganization.The

theoryisstrengthenedwhenmembersofitsorganizationassociatepositivefeelingstowardits
identity.ThisisimportantbecausememberswithpositiveOrganizationalIdentityaremore
likelytomaintaintheirloyaltybytellingothersabouttheorganization,spendingordonating
moremoney,andstayingwiththeorganizationthroughouttheirexpectedtimeframe
(Fombelle,2007,p.77).However,conflictscanoccurwheneverchangetakesplacethat
decreasesmembers’identificationwithintheorganization.Conflictsareprimarilycausedby
theorganization’sinabilitytoupholdthedifferentdimensionsofitsidentity,aswellasthe
disabilitytofulfillsomeofitskeyaspects(Biddle&Rao,1997,p.602).Furthermore,when
theseconflictsemerge,memberstendtoreducetheirinvolvementwithintheorganization
sincetheorganizationisnolongerbeneficialtotheirneeds.Theseconflictswithinthe
organizationcanbegintoviolateitsidentity.Positiveandnegativeidentificationsare
importanttoourparticularresearchbecauseSIUCwouldbenonexistentwithoutitsstudents.
SIUCisaneducationaluniversitythatsurvivesbystudents’interesttoattend.Therefore,our
findingsastowhystudentsaresatisfiedordissatisfiedwiththeuniversity’seducational
programsiscriticalindeterminingitseducationalidentity,becauseinaccuratedatacouldbe
detrimentaltotheOrganizationalIdentityofSIUC.
Fromtheresearch,weareabletoviewaccuracywithinallthreecomponentsof
OrganizationalIdentitytheory.Howmembersoftheorganization’shappinessandconflicts
reflecttheirperceptionswithinallthreestagesofthetheory,andhowthoseperceptions
determinetheindividual’sdifferentlevelsofsatisfactions.Forexample,theSIUCalumni’s
withintheCollegeofArtandDesignasmentionedabove.Highexpectationresultsshoweda
decreaseinpersonalexperiencewhennotmettotheirindividualizedstandards,andthis

relatedtoanimmensedecreaseintheoverallsatisfaction.Thiswasstronglyexpressedwithin
eachindividual,leavingtheindependentvariablewithabadreviewtopossiblefuture
members.
Ourresearchdifferentiatesfromotherstudieswehaveresearchedinvolving
OrganizationalIdentitytheory.Primarily,studyingSIUC’sorganizationfromastudent’s
perspectiveallowedthethirdstageofthetheorytobecomeoneofthemainfindingswithinour
particularresearchbecauseofthemoreaccuratepost‐reflectiononpreviousexperiences
withinallthestagesafterleavingtheestablishment.Furthermore,ourresearchis
differentiatedbecausealluniversity’slikeSIUCarecenteredonstudent’sexpectationsto
attend,experienceandreceivetheireducation,thentofinallygraduateandleavethe
university.Withinourresearch,therewerenoexpectanciestoattendSIUCasastudent
forever.Itwastoattendtheuniversityinordertoonedaysuccessfullyleavethe
establishment,andthenjoinaneworganizationwithexpectationsofapermanentstatusthere.
However,throughourknowledgeofthetheory,wewereabletounderstanddifferent
organizationswaysingoingaboutpost‐entryresults,withouthavingallthosemembersofthe
organizationterminated.Whichiswhyourresearchstudywasequallyseparatedintotwo
parts,sowecouldcomparedifferencesbetweenthetwodemographics,returningSIUCjuniors
andseniors,andSIUCalumni.Thiswasverifiedbecauseitallowedustoseeinmoredepththe
effectivenessofeachstagewithinthethreecomponentsofOrganizationalIdentitytheoryfrom
astudent’sperspectivebefore,during,andafterattendingSIUC.ThereturningSIUCstudent
participantswereparticularlyaccountableforthetwostages,pre‐entryandentrybecausethey
arefullyawareoftheircurrentstateofmindwithoutthepossibilitiesofnegativeand/or
DoesSIUCGetanA?

positivepost‐entryconflictsdeterminingtheiroverallperceptionsandsatisfactions,whereas,
theSIUCalumniparticipantswereabletoshowresultsdepictingallthreestagesofSIUC’s
OrganizationalIdentityasawhole.
Implications
RecommendationstoScholars
Manyrecommendationscanbemadeforfuturestudiesregardingeducational
universitieswiththestudyofOrganizationalIdentitytheory.Duetorestrictionsoftime,our
researchwaslimitedtoaverysmallsizeregardingtheSIUCpopulationthatcouldhavebeen
studiedinordertoattainamoreaccuratedatacollectionanalysis.Therefore,werecommend
thatfuturescholarsdevelopasurveythatcanbeconstructedanddistributedfullyonline.This
willsavetimeinthecollectionofdataprocessbecausemostInternetbasedsurveysallowyou
toviewthetotalsandgraphsfromthemomentitisdistributedtothepublic.However,careful
selectivenesswithissuesofplacementwillneedtobeconsideredinordertoavoidinaccurate
demographicparticipants.
Also,withintheconstructionoftheseparatealumnistudentsector,moreoptionsand
precisequestioningarerecommended.SIUCalumniwereconfusedastowhattoanswerwhen
itregardaspecificsetofstudentsthatwentintolawschool,whichledthemintohavingajob,
justnotnecessarilywithintheirundergraduatedegree.Makingsuretoclarifyhowtoproceed
withthesurveyregardingcertainstudent’sspecificansweringoptionswouldaccommodatetoa
moreaccuratedatacollection.
Forthemostpart,wedorecommendanalyzingthecollectionofdatathrough
comparisonofreturningjuniorsandseniorswithintheuniversity,aswellastheuniversity’s

alumni.Thishelpsviewthedifferencesinpost‐entryresultsfromdifferentcurrentsituational
statesthatmayormaynotbeaffectingparticipantsindividualperspectives.Furthermore,the
continuingofstudyingthevariousanswerswithinthedifferentcollegesoftheuniversityis
highlyrecommendedaswell.
RecommendationsofPractitioners
ThroughthereconceptualizationofSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale’seducation
andtheOrganizationalIdentitytheory,wehighlyrecommendtoallpractitionerstopaymore
attentiontodetailwithinspecificmajorsoftheninecollegesofferedatSIUC.Particularlythe
communicationdesignstudentswithintheCollegeofArtandDesign,chemistrymajorswithin
theCollegeofScience,GeographicInformationSystemsintheCollegeofLiberalArts.
AlsorecommendationstoprofessionaleducatorsundertheCollegeofBusiness
Administrationisasmallrecommendationprimarilyconcerningteachersbeingmoreopento
adapttostudentsneeds.Thissmallchangewouldhelpinincreasingthecolleges’resultsin
ordertobetterperformforitshighexpectanciesstudentstendtomutuallyagreewith.
Furthermore,werecommendtheCollegeofAgriculturalSciencecontinuedoing
everythingjustastheyarebecauseofitsconsistentlyhighandsatisfyinglymutualratings.
Finally,finalrecommendationsforSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondaleasawhole,
shouldprimarilybeconcernedwith,asmentionedabove,withspecificmajorsunderspecific
colleges.Otherwise,wewouldrecommendcontinuingyourhiringprocesswithdedicated,
knowledgeable,opentosuggestion,andpassionateprofessors.Theconsensusofstudentsdid
appreciatetheprofessionaleducators,forthemostpart,butwouldliketobeprovidedwith
morepracticalexperiencewithintheirfieldofstudy.Thiswasoneofthemostcommon

stating,“Iwouldneverrecommendanyonetogohere,”andvariouscommentsfromSIUC

adequatelysatisfytheirindividualneeds.
PayingattentiontothesespecificneedsmayallowSIUCtoreceivean“A”withinallits
requiredclassesaswell.
Conclusion
Allinall,SouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondalehadprettygooddataresultswithinthe
smallpopulationof80participantsasawhole.However,ourpredictionswerecorrectin
analyzingthedifferentfeaturesoftheuniversityinordertoseethedifferencesbetween
answerswithineachcollegeundertheuniversity.AscurrentlyenrolledSIUCstudents,thiswas
primarilyintriguingbecauseofthecuriosityinwonderingifoureducationwearereceivingisas
goodasthebuildingtoourrightand/orleftside.DuetousbeingpersonallylinkedtoSIUC,our
passionforresearchandcuriositytounderstandtheunknownworldofafailingeconomy,it
wasveryinterestinginfindingwhichspecificcollegesunderSIUCuniquelystoodoutwith
similarresponsestosimilarquestionsagainstothers.Aswellas,whichcollegeswerethemost
satisfiedcolleges,whilewhichcollegesweretheleastsatisfied.Theseresultswereevenmore
interestingtofindthroughtheuseoftheOrganizationalIdentitytheory.Sincethefoundation
ofoursurveywasconstructedaroundtheOrganizationalIdentitytheory,wewereableto
understandpost‐entryresultsthroughexpectanciesandexperiencesthroughpre‐entryand
entryresults.

Iftimehadnotbeenarestrictionsowewouldhavebeenabletoresearchalarger
populationofourspecificdemographics,wefeelthisresearchwouldhavebeenagreat
presentationtoSouthernIllinoisUniversityCarbondale.Primarily,wefeeltheresearch
conductedthroughOrganizationalIdentitytheorywasconsistenttoourfindings.Also,wefeel
wehaveaddedtostrengtheningthevalidityofthetheorybecauseofourresearchfindings
throughstudents’perspectivesthatdepictedtheirexpectancylevelsfromSIUC’suseof
applicationattributes,andthoseindividualexpectationsaredifferentiatedfromstudentto
student’spersonalexperienceswithintheeducationalenvironmentatSIUC,andfinallyhowthe
levelsofexpectanciesandpersonalexperiencescandeterminefinalpost‐entryresults
pertainingtotheoverallsatisfactionofeachindividualstudentthatattends,experiences,and
graduatesfromSIUC.
Therefore,thisresearchcouldaccommodateafewthingsbyunderstandinghowSIUC
distinguishesitselfwithintheOrganizationalIdentitytheory,andifSIUC’sexpectancies’,
experiences,andsatisfactionsarewhatreflectthestudents’perceptions?Forinstance,ifSIUC
expectsthatallstudentsshouldbelievetheyshouldreceiveanoverallgoodgrade,then
accordingtoOrganizationalIdentitytheory,ifSIUCisdoingtheirjobcorrectly,tuitionprices
