SUCCESS PROFILESSM: CARD SORT
Card Sort is a creative approach to competency modelling because it quickly
and efficiently puts the job analysis process in your organisations’ hands.
Learners receive a set of cards containing detailed roles for a job or job
family and business drivers describing nearly every organisational strategy.
The process involves narrowing broad concepts down to critical job
challenges by prioritising what is most important to be successful in a role.
The job challenges align directly with competencies that form the basis of the
Success Profile.
Card Sort is different in that people who actually understand the jobs in
question review roles and business drivers instead of having to interpret
complex or overlapping competency descriptions.
Card Sort is designed to cover different levels and roles within an organisation.
The five decks are:
• Individual Contributor—describes different roles a non-leader might play
• Leader—details goals a leader must meet
• Executive—captures the strategic leadership an executive leader needs
to display
• Organisational Fit—describes factors that indicate a fit with an
organisations’ culture
• Job Fit—details factors that demonstrate a fit with a specific role
Card Sort enables organisations to quickly create a highly usable set of job
specific competencies that form the basis of the Success Profiling process.
Success Profiles are much more than simply competency frameworks and
are used for effective selection, development, and performance management
systems.
DDI’s Success ProfilesSM
Approach Allows You To:
• Use a streamlined process
for quickly getting to the
heart of the role.
• Identify four characteristics
that describe the ideal
candidate – work experi-
ence, knowledge/skills,
personal attributes, and
competencies.
• Connect people strategy
to business strategy – and
keep competency models
aligned with changes in
business strategy.
• Support the entire talent
management life-cycle
with consistent profiles
that provide a common
understanding of job and
role expectations.
• Enable placement of the
right people in any role.
• Focus development
activities on the most
critical areas.

A Deeper DiveBecoming Accredited to Facilitate Success Profiles: Card Sort
Why become accredited as a facilitator of Success Profiles: Card Sort?
• With in-house facilitators, individuals can repeat the process as frequently
as needed with limited guidance from external consultants.
• The process is engaging, efficient, fast, and most importantly, driven by the
business.
• It helps overcome the difficulties of articulating what’s required for a job,
using structured language with clear links to specific competencies.
The two-day workshop is held in Sydney and Melbourne. At the end of the two
days, participants leave with lifetime accreditation and the skills, confidence,
and materials to implement the process in their own organisations.
Beyond your Success Profiles: Card Sort
As with all accreditation workshops, DDI is dedicated to support your
implementation and realise your investment. We are pleased to offer these
complimentary services:
• A team of DDI associates dedicated to providing outstanding consulting
and client services support.
• Invitations to join DDI’s community of practice, including:
