CYMEPower Engineering Software and Solutions

The suite of advanced power system analysis tools inthe forefront of grid modernization

The CYME 8 Series, with itsfirst version released in 2016,has promised to deliver a newgeneration of our softwarestrengthening power systemmodeling and analyticalcapabilities, while taking userfriendliness to another level.CYME 8.2 continues to deliverits promise to invest in systemplanning and operation in thecontext of high distributedenergy resources (DER)penetration level, and to furtherthe development of a powerfuluser interface connectingsimplicity with efficiency.

Key new features include:• Several enhancements to

the Integration CapacityAnalysis (ICA) and DER Impact Evaluation, along with the refinement of DER equipment models.

• Enrichment of the time-seriesanalysis capabilities throughthe integration of the LoadFlow with Profiles Analysis andAdvanced Project Manager.

• Continuous improvement ofcore components such as theDynamic Data Pull and DataPush Publishing, ProtectiveDevice Analysis, AdvancedFault Locator and DistributionState Estimator.

• Additional reportingfunctionalities to ease thevisualization and interpretationof simulation results.

Partnering with utilities, listeningto the voice of the customerand leveraging our cutting-edgeengineering and IT expertise, theCYME team continues to servethe industry with a state-of-the-art engineering tool that bringsdependable results at users’fingertips.

Efficiency gains with the rightDER analysis toolsAs the electric power systemlandscape continues to evolvewith the global trend for cleanerenergy, utilities are facing variouschallenges associated with therequirements of our modernera. Increasing workload withlimited workforce, stringentregulations and high customerexpectations trigger the needfor contemporary tools enablingthe automatic, comprehensiveanalysis of networks subjectto current and future DERdeployment.

The CYME Integration CapacityAnalysis module, performingthorough distribution systemload and generation hostingcapacity analysis, becomes moreflexible in terms of simulationparameters and more informativefor results as it gets adopted byan increasing number of utilities.Feeder-level results, hostingcapacity distribution chartsand bottleneck identificationare new outputs to supportengineers with their gridassessment and planning. The CYME DER ImpactEvaluation module, automatingrepetitive, time-consuming anderror-prone verifications involvedwith system impact studies, sees its scope widen witha series of new verificationsrelated to protection schemes. The analysis is also more flexible, with an increased granularityof its simulation parameters and the ability to consider multiple dispersed installations in a single execution.DER modeling reaches newheights with the possibilityof creating a library of AC/DCconverters, the improvementsof advanced inverter functionsand the support of single- andthree-phase power-electronics based shunt reactive powercompensation devices.

While utilities operate in an era of rapid changes where new challenges require innovative solutions, providing clean, reliable, safe and affordable power remains at the core of their mission.

Driven by its vast user base, the CYME team continues to enhance its best-of-breed power system analysis software, making CYME 8.2 the essential tool for supporting engineers with accurate system performance assessment, electrical assets and capital expenditure optimization and sound decision-making.

Visibility and awarenesson future off-peak systemconditions

The ever-increasing DERpenetration levels raise theinterest in hourly forecastsleveraging AMI and SCADAmeasurements for systemanalysis associated with long-term planning. As a result, theCYME Software has taken agreat leap forward in termsof time-series simulationcapabilities with the integrationits Load Flow with ProfilesAnalysis and Advanced ProjectManager.

The CYME Advanced ProjectManager module, assisting withlong-term network planning viaa toolset geared for efficientas-planned system assessmentand risk mitigation scenariocomparison, has seen itsframework evolve towards achronology-driven architecture.Time-stamped modelmodifications, addressing futureviolation through traditionalsolutions or non-wiresalternatives, now establish theproject timeline and enablecalendar-based navigation. When used in conjunctionwith the CYME Steady StateAnalysis with Load Profilesmodule, snapshot or long-termtime-range load flow analyses, ingesting feeder-level downto service-level forecasts, canbe performed on an electricsystem model that changesover time.

Profile and billing datamanagement as well astime-series analysis resultvisualization have also beenseamlessly integrated intothe CYME Software userinterface for the highest levelof user-friendliness.

Unprecedented model andalgorithm sophistication

The power system modelbeing one of the cornerstonesof the CYME Software, aparticular care is taken toensure an organic evolutionof its equipment and networkmodeling capabilities. In linewith industry trends andtechnological advancements,CYME 8.2 features severalenhancements aiming atproviding the best model toemulate the network behaviorunder various operatingconditions.• VAR Compensator – Single- or

three-phase power-electronic based shunt reactive powercompensation device (e.g.Varentec ENGO™, AMSCD-VAR VVO™, ABB PCS100STATCOM, IngeteamINGEGRID™ STATCOM, etc.).

• AC/DC Converter – Dedicatedsingle- or three-phaseequipment allowingthe creation of a library(manufacturer, model andstandard information), plusenhancements to advancedinverter functions.

• Cables and Conductors– Duplex service dropfor detailed low-voltagesecondary distributionmodeling.

• DER Devices – Controlsystems block diagramdevelopment via UDMstability model enablingvoltage ride-through analysis.

• Transformers – T-T and T-TNconfigurations.

As part of our commitmentto continuously improve ouranalysis functions in order tostay in sync with the growingand evolving needs of our

users, several recent additionsto the software have beenfurther enhanced.• Dynamic Data Pull and Data

Push Publishing – Newsoftware development tool,CYME Studio, to supportin-house development.

• Protective Device Analysis –Better abnormal conditionsreporting and improvementsto Minimum Fault, Sequenceof Operations and Arc FlashHazards analyses.

• Advanced Fault Locator– Support for additionaluse cases, improved userfriendliness and revampedresults reporting and display.

• Distribution State Estimator –Dedicated ammeter, varmeterand wattmeter, plus a seriesof novel measurementattributes.

As the CYME team keepsimproving its calculationengines and refining itsmodeling capabilities, theoutcome of these multi-faceteduser-driven developmentinitiatives makes CYME 8.2 afundamental tool for all powerengineering studies.
