Think productivity and think bigThe new generation COP 4050 is Atlas Copco’s most powerful rock drill. It can deliver up to 40 kW of percussive power while maintaining good drill steel economy. And it is designed for holes of up to 165 mm, depending on the model.
To get an idea of the capacity of the COP 4050 series, compare it with the well known COP 1800 series :
The COP 4050 has an impact piston of almost double the mass and twice the impact power. The rotation motors deliver double the torque. The penetration rate with the same drill steel and for the same hole size is thus about twice as high.
Today, the COP 4050 series consists of a rock drill for surface drilling with drill steel, drill steel/guide tube or COPROD drill string – and a rock drill for underground drilling with drill tube or drill rod.
A decade of experienceWhen the first generation COP 4050 was introduced about a decade ago, we had to go out and search for what was then the state-of- the-art technology in the area.
In 10 years, development has moved on and we have gained valuable experience from different types of application. The COP 4050 has changed with us. The new generation looks the same as the earlier one but is different in many respects. For instance, it has a different type of percussion mechanism so as to avoid the risk of cavitation in the event of large power surges.
The COP 4050 is no longer a “fledgling” but a mature piece of equipment with all that means in terms of continuous operational safety, productivity and economy.

1. Pick up the “good” percussive energyWe’ve said it before but it’s worth saying again. It doesn’t require great skill to build a powerful rock drill. The art lies in transmitting the generated power to the rock with the smallest possible losses and least amount of wear on drill steel, rock drill and rig.
Atlas Copco has spent decades studying how percussive shock waves are transmitted through the drill string. In general it can be said that the shock wave from a long and slender “drill steel adapted” impact piston is transmitted with fewer losses and less strain on the drill steel than a shock wave from a short and stubby piston.
Fast penetration and good drill steel economy need not necessarily be mutually exclusive. With a rock drill that has a long, slim impact piston, you automatically get both.
2. Neutralise the “evil” reflex wavesThe more impact power you transmit into the rock, the stronger are the reflex waves returned to the rock drill.
All rock drills in the COP 4050 series are equipped with Atlas Copco’s well-proven double damping system.
When the reflex wave reaches the rock drill, the peak is absorbed by an accumulator as the damping cylinder is pushed back. When the pressure in the damping chamber increases, the energy content of the reflex waves is turned into heat. The excess pressure is ventilated into the rig’s normal hydraulic system, where the surplus heat is dispersed via a cooler.
2. Keeping the joints tightWhen the percussive and reflex shock waves pass through the drill string, the joints are loosened slightly. Unless retightened, they become overheated
COP 4050 Series – the gentlest rock drills a man can get:
due to energy losses and are subject to abnormal wear.
In order for the joints to be retightened, the drill bit must be pushed up hard against, and held momentarily by, the rock. But moving the entire rock drill on the feed takes too long.
The damping piston in Atlas Copco’s double damping system reacts instantaneously, however. The excess pressure from the reflex wave in the damping chamber pushes the damping piston, and hence the “floating” adapter and drill bit, up against the rock so that retightening can take place before the next impact. The excellent and efficient operation of the system can be checked by simply measuring the temperature of the rod joints.
Choose between better economy and better economyThe efficient double damping system means that you can take out more power from the drill bit and obtain faster penetration without increasing the wear in the drill steel.
Alternatively, you can hold the same penetration rate and gain improved drill steel life instead. Whichever way you choose, drilling economy will be better.
Efficient seals prevent inner corrosion a) All mating surfaces are pressurized with lubricating air, which keeps out water and impurities. (Can be disconnected for surface drilling.) b) Front bushing and shank adapter are lubricated separately to keep out dirt and reduce wear.

Change up to higher productionCOP 4050ME/MEX rock drills are designed primarily for use in surface drilling. They have a long slender impact piston that is optimized, together with the adapter, for a drill string of T51 drill steel or SPEEDROD’s for the smoothest and most efficient transfer of impact energy. Guide rods can be included to good effect for drilling in difficult rock. Operational life is excellent, even when taking out high power.
COP 4050ME/MEX rock drills have as standard adapters with helical splines, which have been shown to improve the life of the driver. If you prefer straight splines, we can of course supply such a unit.
The mass of the impact piston is calculated to give optimal production with drill bits in the hole range 89 – 127 mm.
Precise adjustment to the rockThe type of rock is decisive when it comes to how fast you can drill in practice with reasonable operating economy.

The availability of high power and the smooth transfer of energy are of course important basic requirements. But just as important is how well the overall functions can be adjusted to the prevailing rock conditions.
COP 4050ME/MEX rock drills are provided with two stroke-length positions for frequency adjustment. This together with selectable power take-out and rotation speed makes it extremely easy to adjust the operation of the drill for optimal production.
Moreover, when the drills are mounted on an Atlas Copco drill rig, the feed is adjusted automatically to give the fastest, most economical penetration at any given moment.
Troubleshooters that overcome most problemsThe COP 4050ME/MEX range is equipped with the market’s most powerful rotation motors, so there is plenty in hand for fast drilling.
The COP 4050MEX is moreover equipped with a hydraulic extractor that automatically comes into operation when the feed is reversed. The power applied is about 20 percent of the rated percussion power of the drill, which makes it almost impossible to loose a drill string or hole.

COPROD head
Both the piston and the anvil of the rock drill are designed to match the impact rod diameter, thus ensuring efficient transfer of impact energy.
Because the drill steel is encased in the drill tube, a COPROD section is more rigid than a regular drill tube, which helps make the holes even straighter.
In the hole range 152 -165 mm, COPROD 140 is a good alternative to COPROD 127. A reduced gap between drill tube and hole wall increases the flushing speed and keeps the bottom of the hole cleaner.
COP 4050ME/HE-CR – two rock drillsfor best economy in hole rangeThere are four drill strings for the rock drills. For soft to medium-hard rock (compression strength about 200 MPa), any of them can be used with rock drill COP 4050ME-CR.
For rock harder than approx. 200 MPa and with COPROD 127 or 140 for hole range 140 -165 mm, you need a rock drill with a slightly heavier impact piston and should choose the COP 4050HE-CR. For 350 Mpa, for example, the COP 4050HE-CR gives about 20 percent faster penetration with 140 mm drill bits, around 25 percent faster penetration with 152 mm bits, and as much as 30 percent faster penetration with 165 mm drill bits.
Two piston stroke lengths for frequency adjustment, adjustable impact power, and extremely powerful rotation motors with selectable rotation speeds make it easy to adjust the rock drills to the rock.
Moreover, when the drills are mounted on an Atlas Copco drill rig, the feed is adjusted automatically to give the fastest, most economical penetration at any given moment.
Obvious and ingenious – but only from Atlas CopcoA good method for straight holes in really difficult rock is down-the-hole drilling. Compared with tophammer drilling, however, the penetration speed is lower and diesel costs are higher, which makes the down-the-hole method less economical for production drilling.
An alternative is tophammer drilling in combination with drill tubes. The disadvantage here is the drill tube’s economic limitation when it comes to withstanding the high percussive power involved in drilling larger holes.
The COPROD system incorporates all the advantages of drill tubes, such as excellent hole straightness and superb flushing properties. To take the stress off the tube threads, however, the impact energy is transmitted to the drill bit via a separate, unthreaded drill rod placed inside the drill tube. This gives better tolerance towards high percussive power.

TED – flushing air-powered extractor specially designed for COPRODThe whole idea behind COPROD is to achieve a high even production level with the highest possible quality. An extractor contributes to an interrupt-free and efficient drilling cycle and at the same time ensures that you are able to retain the drill string.
TED is mounted at the top of the drill string and is activated automatically when the return force exceeds a certain level.

Assumptions:
Specially designed for upward longhole drillingThe COP 4050MUX has the same basic construction as the other rock drills in the series and hence the same sophisticated percussion energy transmission, operating safety and long life.
The COP 4050MUX has been specially developed for drilling underground. Instead of a built-in flushing head, the COP 4050MUX has a separate flushing head mounted at the front. A careless gasket change therefore has no more serious consequences than a drenching for the operator.
The COP 4050MUX comes in two versions, one with an adapter for drill tubes, the other with an adapter for T51 drill steels. The gear housing has been provided with continuous hydraulic-oil cooling, a refinement that efficiently holds down the working temperature. The front bushing, the sliding surfaces of the adapter and the rock drill’s mating surfaces are pressurized in exactly the same way as the other drills.
Besides powerful double rotation motors, both models also have a built-in, automatic extractor as standard for interruption-free production. The power applied by the hydraulic extractor is 20 percent of the percussive power rating of the drill.
Simple adaptation to drill string and rockProperties such as simple adaptation of impact frequency, percussive power and rotation speed make it possible to increase production while maintaining an economical operating life for the drill string. Moreover, with the rock drill mounted on an Atlas Copco rig, the feed is adjusted automatically for the highest economical penetration speed at any given moment.
