The Critical and Contextual Studies
mini-programmes aim to encourage
discussion of contemporary practice and
theory with a view to situating that
discussion in a wider cultural and
historical framework, and enabling you
to make links with your studio
practice.

Alexandra M Kokoli [email protected] Rethinking the Subject: Feminism and Creative Practice2007: Revival of feminism in art and design
This course will examine a wide range of feminist creative practice (from Louise Bourgeois to Tracey Emin), art and design history and theory, and key debates around gender, sexuality, and representation, with special emphasis on contributions informed by psychoanalysis and post-structuralism.
Not about ‘women artists’ nor simply ‘feminist art’ – BUT
Influence on contemporary creative practice – e.g.
Emphasis on the body, gender, and sexualityInterface (& collaboration) between theory and
practiceMutual implication of ‘high art’ and popular
visual and material cultureQuestioning the division between art and craftInterface between art and politics
A Sense of PlaceAndrea Peach
This programme will look at the
idea of ‘place’ in both a cultural
and philosophical context. It will
investigate how we construct
relationships with places, both
real and imaginary, and the
importance of place in locating
our identity.
We will look at the influence of
land, nature and cultural
geography on creative practice, as
well as the idea of ‘non-places’
in our increasingly global
society.
We will draw on a wide range of
disciplines and discourses to
consider the meaning of place.
Case studies will be taken from
art, architecture, design and
literature.
