TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28
We are to have a positive attitude…
Toward _______________________________
Reasons we struggle with this:
Contrary to __________________________________
Some have __________________________________
We tend to __________________________________
It can be hard for _____________________________
Toward other ___________________
Toward all _________________________
“____________________ is inevitable, ____________________ is optional.”
How do we get this positive attitude?
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 ESV
• W
hen we are young, it seem
s we focus on not doing the w
rong things. Yet, in follow
ing Christ, w
e should expand that focus to include choosing to do the right things, like being thankful. (A
lso read Philippians 4:11-13.) Is it possible to give thanks in all circum
stances? How
?
• Read again the blessing in verses 23-24. H
ow do the m
any comm
ands listed in the preceding verses relate to this blessing?
• Last w
eek we noticed Paul used the phrase, "m
ore and more." A
s he closes his letter w
ith a blessing, he uses the phrase "through and through." D
iscuss what it m
eans to be sanctified through and through. H
ow w
ill He do it?
Reflect: M
ake It Real
See the list below of the com
mands in this closing section. W
hich one is easy for you to obey? W
hich one challenges you the most? If tim
e allows,
(or perhaps as a personal challenge) rate yourself on how you succeed w
ith each of these, w
ith 1 being a major problem
for you and 10 being perfect.
Open:
• W
hat causes you to "blow a gasket?" Traffi
c? Christm

about them.
Dig: Scripture &
Discussion
Paul wrote, "Th
erefore encourage one another with these w
ords" (1 Th
essalonians 4:18). The H
oly Spirit inspired these words and kept
them for us today for this sam
e purpose. As he concludes this letter of
encouragement, Paul ends on a positive note. Th
is wasn't sim
ply wishful
thinking, but rather a call to live a life that shines the light of Jesus in a dark and discouraging w
orld.
Read the text from the m
orning lesson (1 Thessalonians 5:12-28) and
discuss the following questions.
• W
hat do you suppose is the hardest part of being a spiritual leader?
• W
hy would Paul need to tell C
hristians to respect their leaders and hold them
in the highest regard?
• Verses 14-15 speak to how
we relate to other believers. It is m
uch easier to be critical and judgm
ental, instead of having a positive attitude tow
ard them. A
lso, read Colossians 3:12-15. When you are being
critical, how w
ould you want som
eone to correct or admonish you?
How
can we help each other to be m
ore positive?
Respect/esteem those who are over you
Be at peace among yourselves
Admonish the idle
Encourage the fainthearted
Help the weak
Be patient with all
Repay no one evil for evil
Seek to do good to one another/everyone
Rejoice always
Pray without ceasing
Give thanks in all circum
stances
Do not quench the Spirit
Do not despise prophecies but test everything
Hold fast what is good
Abstain from every form
of evil
As w
e end this study of 1 Thessalonians, take a m
oment and reflect on
these five chapters. Again, Paul w
rote, "Therefore encourage one another
with these w
ords." What has encouraged you?
Close in prayer and by encouraging and building up one another.
