Dear Friends,
The Churchyards We had a really good response for the working party in Wouldham churchyard in
September. Nine people helped to clear ivy from walls and gravestones and
remove unwanted self seeded trees and shrubs. We are planning another morning
in Wouldham churchyard on Saturday Nov.16th from 8.30-11.30 for anyone who
would like a workout in the green gym. We would be very pleased to see you.
Please bring gardening gloves if you have them and wear strong shoes.
I would also like to say that I have a responsibility to look after the churchyards
in accordance with the Diocese of Rochester churchyard regulations. Only
monuments which have been approved can be introduced, and no kerbs, railings,
chippings, decorative objects or artificial flowers are allowed. We have written to
some people to ask them to remove some of these items.
Why do we have rules about churchyards? The churchyards have a particular
ethos and a historical significance. They are managed with wildlife in mind,
natural stone and grass are easy on the eye, making them a place of tranquillity,
and they speak of community more than individualism. Some people may choose
to put up a memorial (with approval), others will leave a grave unmarked. Some
will place flowers on a grave, others will mark anniversaries by placing flowers
or lighting candles in church. In a churchyard people pay for the use of a grave
space, they do not buy the plot as happens in some council and private
cemeteries. Councils often permit a greater variety of monuments and this will
suit some people better.
Most people now choose cremation rather than burial, and we have space in both
of our churchyards for the foreseeable future at the present rate of burials. A
number of people are now choosing woodland burial sites where the grave is
marked by a tree which becomes part of a forest.
Whether you go for cremation or burial you can still have the funeral service in
church. This can make it easier for more local people to attend. A good church
funeral service will be individual and personal.
After cremation some people choose to inter ashes, some scatter them in a place
that has some significance. Interment in the churchyard is a possibility. In
Wouldham churchyard we now have a special area for the interment of ashes
with a monument on which people’s names can be inscribed.
Christians believe in the resurrection, a completely new kind of life in the nearer
presence of God. However it can be comforting for us to have a particular place
where we remember those whom we love, and that is why we try to keep our
churchyards as places of beauty.
In peace
Mike

155 EVENING BUS SERVICE UPDATE
Six months ago the highly successful trial of the new 155 evening bus
service ended. It proved that Arriva could run the new evening bus as a
commercially viable service and the service was safe from cuts for the
foreseeable future.
Since the end of the trial the service continues to run well with the
support of enough passengers to make it successful.
During this winter from the beginning of November to the end of
January, Arriva will cap the return fares from Burham and Wouldham to
£5.00 which will be a saving of £1.00.
Updates to both county and national policies on concessionary travel and
other items such as revisions to the cost of fuel duty are awaited and
Arriva have pledged to consult with local representatives if there are any
significant changes.
The best support anybody can give the bus is to use it.
Every journey counts.
THANK YOU On behalf of parishioners, the Church wishes to say a big
‘thank you’ to Darren Emptage, our local stonemason, for
his special work in cleaning Walter Burke’s grave in the
churchyard and for restoring the engraving. The elements
had taken their toll on the stone and the wording is now clear.
It says: Sacred to the memory of Walter Burke Esq. of this Parish who
died on the 12th of September 1815 in the 70th year of his age. He was
Purser on his majesty's ship Victory in the glorious battle of Trafalgar
and in his arms the immortal Nelson died.
Each year on Trafalgar Day, the children from Wouldham School lay
flowers on the grave in his memory.

Hello everyone, I would just like to update you of some of the things the
neighbourhood policing team have been doing in Burham and Wouldham
during the last month and offer appropriate security advice.
After speaking with members of the community I was very happy to hear
the last Wouldham Parish Council meeting went well and the ball is
rolling with the youth club! I think this really will benefit the community.
I have had reports regarding youths acting anti- socially in the car park
behind the Medway Inn PH, Wouldham. Vehicles are driving erratically
and if caught will be dealt with appropriately. I am aware of a couple of
vehicles, if anyone has any more information please report it to 101.
There more ways than ever for the public to contact and engage with
Kent Police. Call 101 to report a non emergency incident, visit
www.kent.police.uk, follow us on:
Twitter @kentpoliceton or Facebook.
People who are deaf or speech impaired can still text ‘police’ and their
message to 60066.
People should continue to call 999 in an emergency, such as when a
crime is in progress, when someone suspected of a crime is nearby, when
there is danger to life, or when violence is being used or threatened.

ACTION WITH COMMUNITIES IN RURAL KENT AND
BRITISH GAS ECO SCHEME NOW INCLUDES
REPLACEMENT BOILERS
Action with Communities in Rural Kent has been working with British
Gas to offer eligible local residents free insulation; they are pleased to
announce that replacement boilers have now been included in the
scheme. People in receipt of certain benefits including pension credit, tax
credits, ESA and income support who have an old and/or broken boiler
may be entitled to a free replacement. Loft and cavity wall insulation are
also still available to the above eligible groups.
For people who don’t receive benefits but have hard to treat cavity walls,
there is an offer of up to £1000 off the cost of the work to insulate them.
If you have previously been declined for cavity wall insulation or think
you have hard to treat cavities there may now be a solution to them.
All the offers are open to people who own their own homes or live in
private rented housing.
The whole process is simple, all you have to do is give British Gas a call
and if you are eligible, they will book in a survey at a time convenient to
you. Their survey is completely free and is just to make sure that your
home can benefit from any additional measures. They will then arrange a
time to undertake the work.
This is a government initiative to reduce energy bills and carbon
emissions. There is no catch, you don’t have to take out a contract, take
up any British Gas products or services or even be a British Gas
customer to take advantage! British gas will check your eligibility when
you phone them; calls are free.
We’re expecting demand to be high so give them a call right now
free on 0800 980 9037.
If you need any help or require further information please contact
Tessa at Action with Communities in Rural Kent on 01303 813790
