Dear Friends,
This is our combined Christmas and New Year edition which
means the Magazine and our deliverers get a break at this
busy holiday time.
I see I was writing this time last year about the pressure of advertising on
us to ‘BUY, BUY, BUY’ for Christmas. The expectations of Christmas
can make the pressure very real.
So I thought it was good to hear Justin Welby, the Archbishop of
Canterbury speak out recently about “the absurd and ridiculous secular
‘over-the-topness’ of Christmas”. He said that the pressure to have a
perfect Christmas can put us and our relationships under strain. He urges
us to be sensible and not put too much pressure on our finances because if
we’re short of money, it can cause arguments. We can get cross with the
children and it spoils life. Rather we should try to share love and affection
with reasonable gifts that demonstrate we really care. He gives us
something to reflect on here and perhaps we should try to get back to
experiencing what Christmas is really about.
So in this Magazine there are many special Christmas services to choose
from for a real Christmas flavour this year. (See page 2 & 3)
You might like to come and join in the carol singing just before Christmas
on the evening of Sunday 22nd December or just come and listen to the
lovely music and choir and see the Parish Church in Wouldham
beautifully decorated with flowers and candles. Afterwards of course we
will enjoy some good Christmas cheer together with mulled wine and
mince pies. Also there is the special Christingle Service on Christmas Eve
and then later, Midnight Mass just as Christmas Day begins.
What could be more Christmasy?
It is a special time to enjoy the simple pleasures of Christmas and also to
make time to reflect on what Christmas is really about.
So the Magazine wishes you ........
A Very Happy, Peaceful Christmas and New Year.
And we’ll be back with the Magazine again in the New Year.
Mary Davis

Flowers in memory of a loved one at Christmas
It is customary to remember family and friends who have sadly
departed with flowers at Christmas time. This Christmas, with your
help, we would like to fill our church in Wouldham with flowers in
memory of our loved ones. All names will be recorded in a book of
remembrance which will be on display in the church over Christmas.
The Church will be open for flower viewing on 21st,22nd,23rd December from 1- 3pm giving families and friends the opportunity to have a time of
reflection and quietness during this busy period. The church will be open at least half an hour before and after services as well. If anyone wishes to request a specific opening time please e -mail or phone Mike Hayes to arrange, (see front of magazine for details)
If you would like to remember your loved ones in this way please use the form below and
send to Catherine Gore, Ringshill Farm, Wouldham, Rochester, Kent. ME1 3TP or leave

New Medway Valley Crossing and Peters Village infrastructure
construction to progress in 2014
Against the background of continued improvements in the
economy, Trenport Investments Limited has made the decision to
progress with the Peters Village development.
The new village will ultimately provide up to 1,000 new homes
together with community facilities including a new primary school,
village hall, medical accommodation and local shops.
As a result of this decision, construction of the new Medway Valley
Crossing and the infrastructure, including all east bank highway
improvements for the new Peters Village near Wouldham, will now
go ahead as soon as possible. Construction will therefore
commence in the spring of 2014, the east bank highway works will
be completed by mid 2015 and the new bridge open to the public
during the autumn of 2016. the building of houses will start during
2015, once the east bank highway works have been completed.
Detailed negotiations with contractors are now underway and full
details of the construction timetable will be provided as soon as
this is available.
Your Parish Councils, village magazine and Trenport’s website
will be regularly updated with news and the dedicated helpline
number remains available to respond to individual enquiries.

December and January Newsletter Dark nights and short days are a feature of this time of year but we’re
glad of the brightness of our children bringing lots of light to our school.
Hedgehog Class did a great job of getting everyone to think about being
bright and safe on the roads when they started November off with an
exciting safety presentation.
Hedgehogs also led worship on the theme of ‘Peace’ with Fox Class
leading on Goodness. This is part of our emphasis on the school Christian
values from the ‘Fruits of the Spirit’. It was good to see so many children
supporting the ‘Shoebox’ appeal, wearing poppies and getting enthused
over the sponsored spellings to raise money for ‘Children in Need’.
As we reach December things always get extremely busy and this year is
no exception! We now have significantly more children than ever before
and so are putting on a range of Christmas events that people are invited
along to.
We will be starting with ‘Mend the Manger’ presented by Fox and Badger
Classes on Tuesday 10th December. There will be an afternoon
performance and also an evening one so that all parents and grandparents
have the chance to see it. Following on from this our Year R Otters will
present a nativity play on the afternoon of Wednesday 11th.
Caterpillar and Hedgehog Classes (Years 3, 4 & 5) are delivering their
Christmas production on Wednesday 18th December.
Finally, Year 6 Owls invite you to carols and mince pies on Monday 16th
at 10:30am in the hall.
The last day of term will see a special service at All Saints Church
starting at 9:15am.
May you all have a truly happy and peace filled Christmas and we look
forward to a successful and fun filled 2014!

BURHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
An additional 300 Christmas lights have been purchased to decorate the
tree on the green at Whitehouse Crescent. These will be up very shortly
(if they are not up already) for all to enjoy as you drive/walk past.
Updates on the Parish Councillor vacancy can be found in the
Notice-boards.
The vacancies for the treasurer and secretary for the Old School
Community Centre have now both been filled, with Janet Richardson as
the treasurer and Nicky Grimes as the secretary.
The Remembrance Sunday Service held on 10 November was well
attended. The weather bright but slightly chilly. Councillor Barritt laid the
poppy wreath on behalf of the Parish Council.
An updated “Welcome” booklet has been produced and is available to
purchase from myself at a cost of £2.00 per copy.
War Memorial Gardens: This project is still hopefully going ahead. We
now have a design plan and will be obtaining quotes over the next few
months. The war memorial itself will not be touched in any way, just the
surrounding area/gardens.
With the cold weather fast approaching, if you have elderly neighbour’s,
please take a moment to ensure that they are safe and well especially as
the festive season is nearly with us.
Don’t forget to recycle all your cardboard, paper, glass, plastics and any
other items which are recyclable. For those new members of the
community, the recycling site is at the Village Hall over flow car park.
Finally, we are still receiving complaints regarding dog poo on pavements
and walkways. Please ensure that you bag and dispose of this correctly,
any bin will do.
Finally, finally, we would like to wish all our residents
a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!! If you have any items that you would like the Parish
Council to discuss, just give me a call on 01622 609324,
e-mail me on [email protected] or come along to the
monthly meetings, normally held the last Monday of the
month. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 16 December 2013,

due to Christmas).

WOULDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
Community Payback Work – The Parish Council has continued to use
the services of the Community Payback team free of charge for work
around the village. The work has now been completed on the steps on
footpath MR6. They are now working on clearing back the weeds on the
footpath on Wouldham Road from the Church to the Nursing Home.
The Parish Council has applied to
Trees to Treasures to obtain free
hedging whips to continue it’s
planting along the edge of footpath
MR1 to help establish this popular
footpath. Once some further
clearance work has been done here, it is hoped that the Community
Payback team will be able to plant the whips for us in the New Year.
Defibrillator Update – We are currently looking at an alarmed cabinet
for this unit and at locations in the village to place it. It is still on
schedule to get this in the village during November. Please see the Parish
Council website for further updates.
Please be vigilant in the village as there have been a number of thefts of
crops from the allotment site recently. This is very disappointing for the
allotment holders who have spent a lot of time and effort here.
The Youth Club has made a promising start with good attendance from
young people in the village every week. Their aim now is to raise funds
for equipment and a container to use for its club.
The next Parish Council meeting is on Tuesday 3rd December in Would-
ham Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to attend!
As this is the last newsletter before Christmas, the Parish Council would
like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Streetlights – Please report any
problems with streetlights to the
Parish Clerk. It would be helpful
if you could provide us with the
code on the post, nearest property
number and road name.

JOHN CULLINGWORTH
7th May 1948 – 4th September 2013
John Cullingworth, former Headteacher at Wouldham All Saints CEP
School died suddenly at his home in Tobago on 4th September 2013.
John was Headteacher at the school from 1992 until he retired in
2005. He joined the school at a time when the roll was only 49
children This grew steadily to around 120 at the time of his retirement.
John was responsible for many structural changes at the school and
over-saw the new buildings. He was always happy to help with
redecoration himself. He also began the Chess Club and this is still
thriving today. A giant Chess Set is planned for the playground in his
memory. John was also responsible for the first Kingsquad group at
Wouldham and again this is still very well attended today.
Following his retirement John moved to his home in Tobago but still
visited England regularly where he always enjoyed meeting
ex-colleagues. An evening to remember John was held at the school on
Saturday 16th November.
POPPY APPEAL
This year’s Poppy Appeal raised £1205.21 from street collections in
Burham and static collections in both Burham and Eccles schools,
Eccles Post Office, Frosts, the Bakers, Surgery and the village Pubs plus
a donation from the Burham Parish Council. Once again many thanks to
all the helpers who made this possible, collectors and counters alike, and
the generous Villagers for giving so well. Thank you. Margaret Mather.

POLICE INFORMATION
Dear Resident
As we approach the winter many of you in the rural communities will,
like me be checking your domestic oil fuel tank to make sure you have
enough to see you through the winter. Many people will also buy now to
get the best price. At this time I would also ask that you to check your
fuel tanks and consider their security. Thieves will know that fuel tanks
will be filling up at this time of year and will seek opportunities to steal
the contents.
The simplest action you can take is to lock the tank cap. Other methods
are shielding, disguising or hiding the tank or placing obstacles around
it which make it difficult to get, such as thorny hedging. The tank needs
to be accessible for delivery companies, of course, but they will under-
stand the need for security and staff carry ladders to assist them in their
deliveries.
Keep your yard or drive gates closed and locked and ensure gates and
fences are in good repair. Lock away tools so they cannot be used to
access your tank.
There are alarms available now that are set off when there is a sudden
change in oil level. These are more expensive security options, starting at
around £100. But this investment should be considered against the cost of
the contents of your tank. Consider installing CCTV and security lighting
too. If siting a new tank, make sure it is within sight of your home but
difficult to spot by potential offenders.
Finally, do look out for your neighbours. Thieves are known to have
followed oil delivery vehicles to identify locations where tanks are full.
They will often use panel vans with plastic tanks in the rear and will use
high speed pumps to transfer the oil. If you see anything suspicious
contact the police by calling 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress You can download and print off a leaflet on fuel thefts, plus read our latest
magazine on rural crime and what Kent Police is doing to tackle it, using the

WILDLIFE IN THE WINTER
It’s an ideal time to take stock of your garden and look at how you can provide
shelter for wildlife through the colder months ahead.
The severe winds many of us have
experienced in the last month may have
caused havoc in the garden but if you
can salvage any fallen wood you could
turn the devastation into something
positive.
Why not turn your clear up operation
into a habitat creation project?
It is very easy to provide winter homes
for wildlife in your garden. Log piles
make the perfect winter home for
several creatures including moths. Some
caterpillar species will only survive
with dead wood to feed on.
A small pile of logs with the bark still attached can support many species of
invertebrates, mosses and fungi, as well as providing food and shelter for birds,
amphibians and small mammals.
A wood pile made of different sizes of logs can be tucked away at the back of a
border in a damp and shady place. Don’t position the pile too close to living
trees and shrubs to prevent any spread of disease or fungal infection from the
decaying wood. Partially bury some logs at the base of the pile so they remain
damp. If in view, the log pile can be made more attractive by growing ferns and
primroses around it or growing climbers over it, such as honeysuckle. This can
help retain moisture but the shade may make it too cold for some insects.
Woodlice, wood-boring beetles, slugs and worms will soon settle there. In turn
these will attract other animals seeking food. Woodlice, for example, feed on
dead wood and plants and are preyed upon by many different animals including
shrews, toads, centipedes and spiders. Small mammals such as mice and
hedgehogs and amphibians such as frogs and toads will shelter between the logs
and look for food. Birds such as wrens and blackbirds will also come looking
for insects.
Housing for solitary bees can be provided by drilling some holes in the logs
horizontally (so they don’t fill with water). You can also provide nesting sites
for aphid-consuming lacewings and ladybirds by tying bundles of hollow canes
or plant stems together and placing horizontally.
Also there are several moths which can benefit from the presence of log piles in
your garden.
