AUGUST CONNECTION
A.W.M. Austin Publication, Vol. 205 August 2017 Edition
Austin Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) is a 501C3 non-profit, professional organization
of women and men who work in the media and allied fields. With nearly 10,000 community members,
the Austin Alliance for Women in Media is proud to represent men and women engaged in all aspects
of creating high-quality media and related services.
Asking Austin’s leading women in media: What’s the one piece of advice you wish someone
had told you when you joined the workforce?
“Dream bigger! The only thing limiting you in your career is the size of your
dreams. Once you develop lofty aspirations for yourself, it’s amazing how your
life starts to align over the long term to reach those goals. I thought I was being
outrageous by making the goal of becoming a GM by 40. It happened at 35!”
KRISTIE GONZALES President & General Manager
“Live well, laugh often, and love what you do…I’ve been very lucky to be in
a business that I truly love. I tell my own kids often to choose a path that
brings them joy. When you find the work that you truly love, you never work
a day in your life. While some days can be challenging, and others are
fantastic, it’s the balance that is achieved by being passionate about what
you do that makes it all work.” STEPHANIE CALLIHAN, Vice President,
Market Manager
“I started in the business very young and obviously young people’s
decision making skills are not fully developed. The one that stands
out that would have been helpful EARLY in my career “Get everything
in writing”!” BREEANNA MALIK, Regional Sr Vice President
“Laugh at your successes and your failures ...
just don't lose your energy.” LISE HUDSON,
Market Vice President
“I didn't have anyone tell me to be prepared that not everyone follows
up. It's one of the things that you learn along the way that has made
me ensure that I pass the follow-up advice along to my team.”
CHRISTINE MARTINEZ-ESCOBAR, Vice President,
General Manager/Director of Sales

COMMUNITY CONNECTION DIRECTOR OF THE FRANK ERWIN CENTER RETIRES
AFTER 28 YEARS WITH ORGANIZATION
Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director
of the Frank Erwin Center, John Graham,
will retire from his position at the end of
August 2017. Graham is only the second
director of the Frank Erwin Center, following
Dean Justice, CFE who opened the venue
in 1977.
During Graham’s 28 year tenure, he was instrumental in bringing world
renowned events to the Frank Erwin Center including the first ever WWF
(now WWE) event in 1989, which was a sellout with approximately
17,000 fans in attendance, the Davis Cup quarterfinal between the U.S
and Spain in 2011, two nights of Paul McCartney’s 2013 “Out There”
tour, a project which took approximately two years to come to fruition,
and most recently, the iHeartCountry Music Festival.
Graham got his start in the arena industry in 1980 as the Events Manager
of Assembly Hall (now State Farm Center) at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. He spent nine years at Assembly Hall, working his
way up to Assistant Director and then Associate Director, before moving
to Austin to join the Frank Erwin Center as Associate Director in May of
1989. He was then promoted to Director in October of 1990.
CONGRATULATIONS John! From everyone at AWM, THANK YOU
for your years of continued support of our organization.

SIGN JOHN KELSO'S ONLINE GUESTBOOK
John Kelso, RIP Veteran Statesman columnist died, aged 73
However, like many Austinites, he was adopted by the city, not native to it. Born in
Fort Sill, Oklahoma, raised in Maine, and educated at the University of Missouri in
Columbia, Mo., Kelso's first jobs in journalism were back in New England at
the Manchester Union-Leader and the Portsmouth Herald. In 1976, he moved to
Austin and joined the Statesman, starting the regular column for which he became
most famous the following year. Its trademark became a combination of social and
political commentary, and a humor often described as down-home.
A National Press Club award winner
and 13-time Best of Austin winner,
Kelso's satirical columns were a fixture
at the Statesman for 40 years. Over
time, he became one of the defining
voices of Austin, especially representing
a particular strand of South Austin
identity, tied up in traditions of BBQ and
the Broken Spoke.
Kelso is survived by his wife, Kay, and
step-daughters Lauren Williams and
Rachel Calvin. Per the Statesman, the
family asks that any memorial donations
go to People’s Community Clinic in
North Austin or canine charity Spinone
Rescue of America.
