Grand Coulee Dam: American Experience Tuesday, April 3 at 8pm
Grand Coulee was more than a dam — it was a proclamation. In the wake of the Great Depression, America turned from private enterprise to public works — not simply to provide jobs, but to restore faith. The ultimate expression of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, Grand Coulee played a central role in transforming the Northwest. After WWII, a vast irrigation project made possible by the dam helped turn the barren deserts of central Washington into rich farmland. But the dam prevented access to one of the greatest salmon rivers in the world. Deprived of the salmon — their most important resource — the native people who lived along the Columbia witnessed a profound cultural decline.
Masterpiece Classic: Great ExpectationsPart 1: April 1 at 9pm; Part 2: April 8 at 9pm
Widely considered one of Charles Dickens’ greatest novels, Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, the battered orphan boy who rises from blacksmith’s apprentice to gentleman under the patronage of a mysterious benefactor, who assures him of “great expectations.” Additionally, on April 15 at 9pm Masterpiece Classic will air an adaptation and completion of Dickens’ last novel, left unfinished at his death The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Goose Pond: The Story of a Wetland & Its NeighborsSunday, April 22 at 2pm
Visit a wetland marsh in southwestern Indiana, the largest and one of the most successful wetland restorations of its kind in U.S. history. Early in Indiana’s history, the federal government began encouraging settlers to dredge, drain and tile Gosse Pond in an effort to make it suitable for farming. Because of the mucky soil and seasonal flooding, those efforts were only marginally successful. For years, attempts were made to restore the marsh to its original state as a refuge for the beautiful migratory birds that travel from the southern tip of South America to the Arctic.

April Taxes & Topics It’s April and there are two things one can’t ignore: taxes are due and the noise from the political campaign is becoming relentless.
WTIU can offer two kinds of relief. Good, solid, news and information on the political candidates and a source of tax relief for those who planned wisely in 2011. If filling out those pesky 1040 forms for 2011 gives you pause, consider planning a gift now to WTIU during 2012. You will be better prepared for a charitable deduction that may make your tax debt more palatable next year—and make you feel good for supporting your local public television station.
Keep WTIU in mind for a state tax credit too. Because WTIU is part of Indiana University, you can claim up to $200 of a $400 gift as a tax credit--if you file jointly, and $100 in credit on a $200 gift--if filing singly. That credit comes right off the top of what you may owe in state taxes. It is money back in your pocket. Look for Form CC40. Of course, it is always wise to consult your financial advisor on such matters. To discuss ways of making a tax-advantaged gift to WTIU, feel free to contact Nancy Krueger at (812) 855-2935 or [email protected]. Additional information on other ways to make a gift can also be found at indianapublicmedia.org.support/tv.

Find us on:
Travel through time,
space and systems to reveal a nation of interdependent and
intricately interwoven networks that feed and
power the nation, produce millions of goods, transport
people great distances and still come together to make America work. These networks all rely on vast, complex and precisely calibrated systems, yet most Americans have never had the chance to observe or understand them. Until now.
America Revealed
Journey high above the American landscape to reveal the country as never seen before.
Food MachineWednesday, April 11 at 10pm
Over the past century, an American industrial revolution has given rise to the biggest, most productive food machine the world has ever known. Learn how this machine feeds nearly 300 million Americans every day. Discover engineering marvels created by putting nature to work, and consider the toll our insatiable appetites take on our health and environment.
Nation on the MoveWednesday, April 18 at 10pm
America is a nation of vast distances and dense urban clusters, woven together by 200,000 miles of railroads, 5,000 airports and four million miles of roads. These massive, complex transportation systems combine to make Americans the most mobile people on earth. Journey across the continent by air, road and rail, venturing behind the scenes with the workers who get us where we need to go.
Electric NationWednesday, April 25 at 10pm
Our modern electric power grid has been called the biggest and most complex machine in the world — delivering electricity over 200,000 miles of high-tension transmission lines. Travel around the country to understand its intricacies, its vulnerabilities and the remarkable ingenuity required to keep the electricity on, every day of the year.
Made in the USAWednesday, May 2 at 10pm
American manufacturing has undergone a massive revolution over the past 20 years, becoming — gloomy perceptions to the contrary — the number-one manufacturing nation on Earth. Cross the country to look at traditional and not-so-traditional types of manufacturing.
