Dick Estell
Last Chapter for The Radio ReaderLast month we closed the book on one of the longest-running programs on WFIU and in public radio. Dick Estell, better known as the “Radio Reader,” hung up the microphone after more than five decades of reading works of fiction and non-fiction on the air. Now in his 90th year, Dick has been dealing with health issues that have led him to make what he called a “heart-breaking decision” to end the program. In early March, the final episodes of Rogue Lawyer by John Grisham were read by Dick’s good friend, Bob Page, retired manager of WKAR-TV at Michigan State University. Thus marked the end of a series that has existed in one form or another since it began in 1936 on WKAR-FM. In 1964, Dick Estell became the third person to serve as the Radio Reader, and he continued far beyond his retirement in 1986 from full-time work as WKAR’s station manager. The departure of The Radio Reader from our schedule left us with an extra half-hour from Monday to Friday mornings at 11:30. We’ve filled that by extending Classical Music with George Walker to noon. Also, we’re taking this opportunity to expand Just You and Me to a two-hour program that now begins at 3 p.m.
Beethoven in BloomingtonWednesday, April 20 at 8pm
Join us for this live broadcast from the Musical Arts Center at Indiana University as guest conductor Carl St. Clair leads the IU Philharmonic Orchestra and Oratorio Chorus in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. The concert marks the tenth anniversary of the plane crash in which five music school students perished, and the first performance at IU of Beethoven’s masterpiece since the tragedy. WFIU Music Director Joe Goetz hosts.

Jackie and Rachel Robinson
Jackie RobinsonMonday and Tuesday April 11-12 at 9pm
Jackie Robinson is a new two-part, four-hour Ken Burns documentary that chronicles the life and times of Robinson, his breaking of baseball’s color barrier, and lifelong fight for equality on and off the field.
The film includes interviews with President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Harry Belafonte, Tom Brokaw and others, who reflect on Robinson’s legacy.
Born to tenant farmers in rural Georgia, Robinson challenged institutional racism even as a teenager, when he demanded service at a lunch counter and refused to sit in the segregated balcony of a movie theater.
In the spring of 1947, Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey signed Robinson to a major league contract. To help ensure the success of their endeavor, Robinson agreed to ignore the threats and abuse that Rickey assured him he would face.
Robinson kept his word, remaining silent while he dazzled fans with his brilliant play and
helped lead the Dodgers to the National League pennant. By the end of the year, he was the most famous black man in the country and second only to Bing Crosby as the most popular American.
In 1949, Robinson started to speak out—to players, umpires, and the press—while playing some of the best baseball of his career. His outspokenness drew criticism across the league, from the press, and even from black fans and players. When he retired in 1956, many were happy to see him go. After baseball, Robinson continued to use his fame to elevate the civil rights movement.
Jackie Robinson is also a warm portrait of a devoted husband and father, featuring extensive interviews with Robinson’s widow, Rachel, and their surviving children Sharon and David.
