April 19, 2020 Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday)
Reflections on today's Gospel JOHN 20:19-31
(Acts 2:42-47; Psalm 118; 1 Peter 1:3-9)
KEY VERSE: "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed" (v.29). TO KNOW: On the evening of the resurrection, the disciples were gathered in fear behind locked doors. They were overjoyed when the Risen Lord appeared in their midst with a greeting of "peace" (Hebrew, Shalom). Just as God breathed life into Adam, the first living being (see Gn 2:7), the Son of God breathed the life-giving Spirit upon his disciples, sending them forth with the power to forgive sins. Thomas (called Didymus, meaning “twin”) was absent on this occasion and he refused to be-lieve their testimony. His defiant words "unless I see" (Jn 20:25) came from one who knew Jesus as an intimate friend. A week later, the Risen Christ appeared again, and this time Thomas was present. When Thomas touched Christ's wounds, he declared Jesus to be his "Lord and God." Jesus told Thomas that those who believed in faith were more blessed than those who needed visible proof. TO LOVE: Am I Thomas’ twin? Do I refuse to believe unless I see? TO SERVE: My Lord and my God, help me to believe when my faith wavers.

A letter from Bishop Taylor April 15, 2020
To the people of the Diocese of Little Rock, I want you to know that I appreciate what a difficult time this has been
for all of us, especially the suspension of public Masses and all other public gatherings in response to the COVID-19
pandemic. I think we have all grown in our love for and longing for the Eucharist. I know this has been very hard for
our priests, who miss intensely the joy of celebrating the Eucharist with the community, and even more so for you in
the laity who must participate in the Mass through the internet or on TV, if that. And of course, there is everything
connected with COVID-19 itself: the illness, the deaths, the loss of jobs and income, the isolation, the closing of
schools, etc. I am convinced that the Lord will use this adversity to bring us many blessings, even if we can’t always
see it at the time. Hopefully drawing us closer to himself, helping us to see more clearly what is really important and
perhaps reassessing our priorities going forward. I hope that the increased time spent together will strengthen the
bonds within our families and that time spent in prayer together become a source of spiritual growth.
As I am sure many of you will recall, on March 12 I promulgated required changes for the rest of March and the
entire month of April in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the temporary suspension of all public Masses and previously scheduled Confirmation ceremonies plus the cancellation or postponement of all non-essential
gatherings in your parishes pending further notice. I also indicated that on April 15 I would make a determination
regarding activities in the month of May. Well, we have now reached April 15 and the COVID-19 cases have not even
peaked yet in Arkansas. According to our public health officials, physical separation needs to continue to be main-
tained for the time being, so I am extending our present suspension of activities (and the corresponding dispensation
of the Sunday obligation) to May 18. On April 30 I will make a further determination regarding the remainder of the
month of May, including whether an earlier opening date might also be possible if things have changed for the better
between now and then. May 31 is Pentecost; let us pray that by then the conditions will be right for us to resume
normal activities.
In the meantime, let us pray for those who are ill and those who have died, for those searching for a cure and for
medical caregivers who risk their own health to care for others, for those who are faced with unexpected financial
difficulties and for those who due to age or underlying medical problems know themselves to be especially vulnerable.
Sincerely in Christ,
+Anthony B. Taylor Bishop of Little Rock
Good Afternoon Lovers of Life, I hope you have heard the good news that Arkansas has joined the growing list of states that are banning non-essential surger-ies INCLUDING abortion. I attended a conference call this past Friday with pro-life leaders across the state and was shocked to learn that both abortion centers in Little Rock (Little Rock Family Planning and Planned Parenthood) were extremely busy. One faith-filled woman who continues to pray at PP reported that she witnessed 68 cars in ONE DAY. Especially troubling were all the out-of-state car plates. Out-of-state travelers are discouraged at our public parks yet cars were arriving from Louisiana, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas to kill their un-born babies. We praise and thank God that Gov. Asa Hutchinson has stated that banning abortion along with other non-essential medical procedures will help fight the COVID-19 by conserving medical supplies. Please take just a few minutes and drop a "thank you“ to Gov. Hutchinson. https://governor.arkansas.gov/online-services/contact-us/ I can't imagine what kind of pressure he is experiencing right now. If it's helpful to you for ideas, below is the note I sent to him: Letters of Kindness - Don't forget to drop a note of kindness to a girl(s) receiving services at our local pregnancy help centers. I didn't realize this, but some of the young women have NO SUPPORT other than the pregnancy help center. A note from you assuring them of your prayers will probably mean more then we'll ever know. Send notes to one (or all!) of the centers below: God abundantly bless you and all you are for Life. In Christ, our Life! Prayer to the Virgin Mary for Protection O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.
Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. --Pope Francis

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY—Sr. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, was God’s instrument to proclaim Divine mercy toward every human being. Sr. Faustina was inspired by a vision in which Jesus told her that a painting should be made of his image with the invocation "Jesus, I trust in you." She commis-sioned the painting in 1935. Cardinal Karol Wojtyla, then Archbishop of Krakow (later St. Pope John Paul II), began Sr. Faustina's process of beatifica-tion. At her canonization in 2000, the first saint in the new millennium, the Pope designated the 2nd Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. The Pope's final days coincided with the Church's preparation to celebrate the feast he described as flowing from Christ's "most profound mercy," & which the Lord himself established. Speaking of St. Faustina and the importance of the message contained in her Diary, the Pope call her "the great apostle of Divine Mercy in our time."
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy—Use a chaplet or ordinary rosary.
Begin with the Sign of the Cross.
Continue by saying one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Apostles Creed.
Then on the OUR FATHER bead say the following words: "Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dear-ly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world."
On the 10 HAIL MARY beads say: "For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us & on the whole world."
Continue around the chaplet.
In conclusion recite these words three times: "Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."
End with the Sign of the Cross.
