report for the year 2007– 2008 5spare tyre theatre company4
Spare Tyre currently has two principal
areas of activity:
• Elders Theatre Community Creative work with elders 60+
• inc.Theatre Creative work with adults with learning disabilities 18+
Spare Tyre has been in existence for 30 years. It is a stable
and thriving arts organisation owing its stability to good
management and practice. Spare Tyre is revenue funded
by Arts Council England (London), London Councils and the
London Borough of Camden.
Spare Tyre works intensively with people who have a wide range of disabilities such as dementia, autism, physical and sensory impairments, mental health, downs syndrome, and seizures.
Spare Tyre supports two ensembles HotPots (elders 60+) and inc.Theatre Ensemble (adults with learning disabilities) which are recognised Spare Tyre brands. Spare Tyre’s shows reach audiences of 2,500 each year.
The company actively trains, works with and manages artists, production staff, administrative staff and volunteers. On an annual basis this can be up to 70 individuals.
• To create high quality theatre with non-professional performers through a structured and supportive process.
• To offer training appropriate to the community’s needs where participants’ experiences are validated.
• To involve agencies in partnership that will ensure the necessary support for our work.
Spare Tyre uses theatre with voiceless communities to
provide opportunities for people’s life stories to be shared
and celebrated creating theatre that transforms lives and
challenges social prejudice.
• To respond to the changing needs of communities and create models of good practice.
• Assert Spare Tyre’s image as a leading and innovative theatre company.
aims
Theatre tours HotPots toured
Dangerous Games London-wide to resource and community centres. The show charted the “technology takeover” in Britain from 1953 until 2007 and its affects on older people. Dangerous
Games is available as a professional video for resource centres.
HotPots also devised and performed
Alice at Theatro Technis in Camden and Oxford House in Bethnal Green. In true HotPots style it was a comical piece addressing retirement. Sample audiences included: ex-offenders, learning disabled groups, residents of care homes and people from secure mental health units.
report for the year 2007– 2008 7
Elders Theatre Community
ETC taps the talents of older people (60+) who suffer prejudice,
misunderstanding and isolation. ETC links with the older
community in a number of ways. This includes HotPots who are
an ensemble of skilled artists aged 60+ keen to tackle issues
around old age and isolation positively, radically and inventively.
Spare Tyre Documentary Spare Tyre had its first airing on television on the
Community Channel throughout March and April 2008 with the documentary film Look at Me.
Professional Training Camden Primary Care Trust and St Pancras Hospital commissioned HotPots to develop Multi
Disciplinary Training, and staff programme
Dignity and Respect.
Weekly Arts Workshops Spare Tyre held film, dance, drama and storytelling sessions in the London Boroughs of Islington, Camden and Tower Hamlets with isolated elders based in resource centres.
“FANTASTIC – it really brightened my day – but with an underlying meaning. Gordon Brown needs a good talking to.”Audience member, Alice

Schools and Theatre Tour The inc.Theatre Ensemble toured Pieces of
Ourselves to schools and theatre venues. The live art installation was moving and challenging, involving mime, sound, dance, film, radio and theatre.
Residency Moving On took place at Charlton School, a special school in Greenwich. The residency was an exploration of change as experienced by school leavers producing film, soundtrack and live performance. Characters were created and performed by Charlton School pupils. The residency also produced thought provoking dialogue with staff as to how to manage change and expectation for young adults.
inc.Theatre
inc.Theatre encourages skilled artists with learning disabilities to
tackle issues surrounding identity and social cohesion, engaging
with the wider arts community through the inc.Theatre Ensemble
and Outreach work. The inc.Theatre Ensemble tour London-wide
to audiences within arts venues and educational settings.
Theatre Skills Course Spare Tyre offered the Level One (OCN) inc.Theatre Course during 2007/08. The 2-year course encourages students with learning disabilities to think and work as practicing artists, researching, developing, devising and producing individual/small group shows/workshops. Spare Tyre also piloted a successful one day a week 20-week accredited short course (Entry Level OCN).
Drama Sessions at Watermans Arts Centre Spare Tyre ran drama sessions for adults with learning disabilities culminating in a sharing entitled The Tale of the Palace by the River.
“The characters were so strong and so much was conveyed with the smallest of sounds, speech or movement. Very, very clever and quite surreal! Great timing and use of space too. There was a real warmth to the performance and great communication with members of the audience.”Audience member

Primary Schools Tour Pretend
Families was a play for primary schools KS2 raising and exploring issues around same sex parents and homophobic language. The play deals with the wider issues of difference, acceptance, friends and family. Pretend Families toured to schools and venues, reaching an audience over 2,500 aged from 8–80 years old.

“As with racism in the 70s and 80s, homophobia is an issue that we
cannot sweep under the carpet or deny that it exists in our schools.
This brave production opened many eyes in our multicultural school
attended by Hindus, Christians and Buddhists, with Muslims the
biggest faith group. The play is not just about homophobia, but is
about stereotypes, prejudice, honesty and integrity. Lastly, no – we
didn’t have any pupil, parent or staff complaints!”

BALANCE SHEETas at 31st March 2008
“There wasn’t much going on in my life before I joined Spare Tyre. That was then. Being with Spare Tyre has changed my life completely and I mean that sincerely.
The first time I got involved we did a show in a real theatre and I thought I’d never learn all my lines. But I thought I’d go for it and now I have a new social life and so much confidence I can go anywhere and talk to anyone. I could even speak comfortably to the Queen!
We get so much support and help from Spare Tyre, so that we don’t feel vulnerable. It’s a safe environment, we feel safe.”Member of HotPots
