ANGELS – OUR ALLIES IN THE GOOD FIGHT
For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways (Psalm 91:11)
I cannot remember exactly when my devotion to the
angels began, but it must have been when I was very young. My mother once gave me a prayer card with the prayer to my guardian angel; I’m sure many of us know it – “Angel of God, my guardian dear…” Since then, my fascination with angels has only grown, and it has caused me to ask many questions. What are angels? What do they look like? Why are they so mysterious? Now is the perfect time to ask these questions, since our two great angelic feast days are coming up: the Feast of the Archangels on September 29 and the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2.
The Bible paints a picture of angels that challenges our assumptions. For instance, when the angel Gabriel appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:11-23), the Greek text reveals that Zechariah responded, not with joy, but with fear, terror. Contrary to the angels portrayed in modern books, movies, and TV shows, angels are beings of immense power – some for good and others for evil. Zechariah’s response is probably how we would also respond if we were to see an angel face to face. Perhaps we should ask ourselves – Why are there angels in the first place? What do we need guarded from, as the Psalm says?
There are many common misconceptions of angels out there. Think of those childhood cartoons that depict a character dying and rising up to the clouds with wings, harp, and a halo. Do we actually become angels when we die? The answer is no. We are different types of creatures altogether. Angels were created in the beginning to dwell with God in heaven to praise and give glory to him. They are pure spirit and possess immense power. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us: “As purely spiritual creatures angels have intelligence and will: they are personal and immortal creatures, surpassing in perfection all visible creatures, as the splendour of their glory bears witness” (CCC, #330). But what do they look like? Many paintings portray angels as little “cherub” babies floating around, or terrifying soldiers with swords and shields crushing the demons beneath their feet. Many of these images are drawn from Sacred
Scripture, but we must not forget that these beings do not have bodies like us. The word “angel” in the Greek actually means “messenger”, and often times they appear in these ways in order to aid us on the journey of life.
The Fathers of the Church, those men who lived shortly after the time of the Apostles, teach us that angels have different roles. First, they pray for us. The angels are constantly lifting us up in prayer before God. They stand before the face of God, before His throne in heaven and pray that we have the strength to do His will. Second, they protect us from evil so that we can do penance for our sins. These angels of penitence guard us from temptations so that we can have a real conversion of heart and love God more perfectly.
This leads to a third role of the angels – ministers of peace. Psalm 91 helps us to understand: “For he will give his angels charge of you to guard you in all your ways.” These “peaceful” angels are not pacifists: they guard us in the Christian life by fighting back the demons that want us to fail. Think of the book of Revelation: “Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven” (Rev 12:7-8). War! Our peace is won at a great price. And this is the point: we need to be guarded from the forces of evil. There is a deeper reality, a more real world going on all around us, a true battle for our souls. This is not some pious, superstitious idea. We are at war with evil! By our baptism, Christ has claimed us as his own, but we still must fight the good fight, struggling every day against the world, the flesh, and the devil. The Fathers of the Church recognized this. The angels are there to protect us from a very real enemy. We need them!
There is nothing superstitious about the angels. They are as real as we are, and we need to reach out to them. In times of temptation, we turn to them for assistance. In times of darkness and confusion, we ask for their prayers. Every day, we should turn to them and beg their assistance on the journey of life and the battle against sin.
If you are interested in learning more about our spiritual friends and protectors, I will be hosting a short adult bible study, starting September 14 on the angels and the bible. Please check the bulletin over the next few weeks for more information.

Calling all Singers!
The music ministry is looking for you. If you like to sing or know someone in the parish who does, you’re invited to join the music ministry. We’re looking for singers for all three weekend Masses. Don’t have a lot of time available? We can work around your availability. Don’t feel comfortable leading the singing or coming up to sing the Psalm? No problem. You’re welcome to join as an additional singer. The more singers we have the more flexibility we have to try new things. Contact Jennifer Duquaine at [email protected] for more information or simply come to practice (every Thursday from 6:30-7:00 pm).
