Proud history
The2ndInfantryDivisionwasactivatedinBourmont,Franceon26October1917
duringWWI.The2nd(Indianhead)DivisionAssociation,whichwasorganizedin
1918,istheofficialorganizationofveteranswhoservedinthe2ndInfantryDivision.
The2ndInfantryDivisionhasservedwithdistinctionandvalorfighting
inthetrenchesandforestsofFranceduringWWI,thehedgerowsofNormandy
andtheBattleoftheBulgeinWWII,themountainsofKorea,andthedeserts
andcitiesofIraq.Thoughitsmissions,personnelandequipmenthavechanged
dramaticallyovertheyears,itremainsthepremiercombatformationinthe
UnitedStatesArmyand“SecondtoNone.”

As with many of you, my service in the Army’s famous
2nd Infantry Division left me with a deep sense of
fulfillment. I hope you will join me as a member of
the Indianhead Division Association in order to honor
the accomplishments of former Warriors and to

The Indianhead Insignia
Inmid-March1918,ColonelHerringshawsentamemorandum
tohisforcesofferingprizemoneyforthebestinsigniadesign
forhisforces.Heexplainedthedesignshouldbesimple,easily
distinguishable,noteasilyconfusedwithotherunits,andhave
somespecialsignificance.RoughsketchesweredueatHead-
quartersbynoonMarch31st.
Sketchesbegantopourinandswampedtheboardresponsibleforse-
lectingthebestdesign.Aftersomedebate,twowinnersemerged:anIndianhead
submittedbySergeantLouisLundy,andastardesignedbySergeantJohnKenny.
Fortunately,ColonelHerringshawwasnotcompletelysatisfiedwiththewinning
designssohecombinedthem,placingtheIndianheadontheStar.Hedecided
thecombinationofthetwomadethebestdesign.
InJune1920,itwasdirectedthattheinsignia,ablackshieldwithawhitestar
andIndianhead,betheofficialinsigniawornbyall2ndInfantryDivision
personnel.ItbecameapermanentpartoftheuniformswornintheDivision.
