Sunday School Olympics 2014 Oratorical Competition
Topic “Will the Foundation of our Church be Shaken because of the
Changing Laws of the Land?”
Should address: 1. the legalizing marijuana 2. the legalizing same sex marriage 3. Use of Bible reference
5 to 10 minutes Memorized
Junior Level Ages 12-‐15 Senior Level Ages 16-‐22
The characteristic of oratory which distinguishes it from public speaking, in general, is its appeal to the emotions. No matter how clear, logical, or effective speaking may be, as long as it appeals primarily to the intellect, it remains public speaking. When, however, emotions are touched — love, joy, hate, ambition — then speaking becomes oratory. And although oratory appeals powerfully to the emotions of the hearer, yet it is not necessarily preaching. Oratory is composed of two elements: matter and manner. When one gives an oration, one should be certain of the content and substance of his/her oration. Oratorical topics are received yearly from the National Coordinator. Orations must be original, and are to be done from memory. The time limit is 5-‐10 minutes.

Mathematics Competition
Contrary to popular thinking, mathematics, not music, is the only true universal language. Mathematics is one of the most useful and fascinating divisions of human knowledge. It is a part of the experience of all people, regardless of how far they have gone in school. Mathematics helps us in many other important areas of study, and has the power to solve some of the deepest puzzles man faces. Mathematics is the very foundation of scientific technology. Most people, whether they realize it or not, use mathematics in varying degrees in their everyday activities. Mom, for instance, utilizes mathematics when she goes grocery shopping, or plans out the family budget. Dad uses mathematics when he works in his carpentry shop, or makes out the income tax returns. The daughter uses mathematics when she cuts out a pattern for a new dress, and their son utilizes mathematics for his model-building hobby. (SMM COGIC) The mathematics competition is provided to promote excellence in mathematics. Students with a strong background in mathematics are encouraged to participate. Calculators are not permitted in Level I and Level II competitions. Level III participates are encouraged to bring and use their own calculators. Who is eligible? The Mathematics Competition is conducted on three levels: Level I Grades 3 – 4 Preparation: Basic Operations - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division
Basic Fractions, Word Problems Level II A: Grades 5 – 6, B: Grades 7 – 8 Preparation: Basic Operations, Fractions, Decimals, Percents and Word Problems Level III A: Grades 9 – 10, B: Grades 11 – 12 Preparation: Algebra, Geometry, Word Problems, SAT Math Each level will have a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winner from each session (A & B). The test will be graded. The student with the highest grade on their level will receive 1st place. The student with 2nd highest grade will receive 2nd place and third highest grade will receive 3rd place. In the event of a tie, students will be administered tie breakers problems. Please Note: If any grade category has less than four “4” participants, the First & Second Sessions (A&B) will be combined for awards purposes.

Sunday School Olympics 2014
Who is eligible? Any youth age 6 to 18 who are in grades 1 thru 12. Guideline and Rules Level I ~~~~~~ Grades 1 -‐ 2 Level II ~~~~~ Grades 3 -‐ 4 Level III ~~~~~ Grades 5 -‐ 6 Level IV ~~~~~ Grades 7 -‐ 8 Level V ~~~~~~ Grades 9 -‐ 12 Study words requirement: 1. Study your grade level list, put the spelling in a sentence, and look up definitions Competition 1. The Spell master shall pronounce each word clearly to each contestant. The contestant will
have to “say spell say” repeat the word then spell the word then repeat the word a second time. The contestant can ask the Spell master to put the word in a simple sentence or give a definition. (Note some words have more than one spelling or definition. If the word is spelled right it will be accepted)
2. Having started to spell a word, a contestant shall be given no opportunity to change the letters
once pronounced. A speller, having started to spell a word may retrace, providing the letters and their sequence are not changed in the retracing.
3. Upon missing the spelling of a word, the contestant drops out of the contest. 4. When the contestants are reduced to two, the elimination procedure changes. When one
person misspells a word the next person must spell that word plus the next word to win. If one of the last two people misspells, and the other person after correcting the error of the first person misses the next word given, the first can have the chance to spell that word, if spelled correctly then if the same person spells the next word right then that person wins. (You must spell two words right in a row to win).
5. Any question during the contest must be referred to the judges immediately. No protest can be considered after a round has started.
Judges 1. The three judges are in complete control of the Bee. 2. Head Judge has the final say during the Bee. (Timekeeper)
2nd Judge shall follow the Spell master word List. (Recording Judge) 3rd Judge shall check the Webster Dictionary for correct spelling and assist the Spell master with the words.

from the previous year will defend their title by competing against the winner of the first two teams.
Only First and Second Place Winners from both sessions will be awarded individual
trophies. COACHES: It is your responsibility to contact the Bible Bowl Coordinator(s) with the total number of
team members on each team by May 2010 in order to prepare for the purchase of trophies. It is also your responsibility to review the rules with your team(s).
OFFICIALS: There will be an adult Moderator, the person who will read all questions. There will be
three (3) Judges and a scorekeeper. The panel of judges will be given a copy of the questions and answers with chapter/scripture references for Bible questions on the day of the competition.
SCORING: All correctly answered questions will receive its assigned points: The Bible (2 points),
COGIC History (1 point) and COGIC Doctrine (1 point). For each incorrect answer, points will be subtracted. The score from each round will be carried into the next round and totaled at the end of the third (3rd) round. In the event of a tie, 3 additional Bible Bowl questions will be asked to determine the winning team.
ROUNDS: The competition shall consist of three (3) rounds; one each of the specified book or books of the Bible, Church History and Church Doctrine. There shall be 12 Bible questions, 7 COGIC History questions and 5 COGIC Doctrine questions. All Bible questions will be asked in sequence of chapters.
QUESTIONING: The moderator will announce the topic of the round. Each team will then have the
opportunity to choose the four (4) team members who will answer the questions for that round. Team members MAY NOT confer with each other during the questioning. Each person should listen to the entire question before buzzing in, BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE TO. (REMEMBER IF YOU BUZZ IN AND ANSWER INCORRECTLY YOU WILL LOSE A POINT OR POINTS.)
Once a person buzzes in he or she should wait to be recognized by the judges and
then give the most precise answer to the question in a loud clear voice.
Each team will have 15 seconds to buzz in after the moderator has finished reading the question.
Should a team member stop the moderator by buzzing in before he or she has
completely read the question, the moderator will stop immediately. The person will then have 15 seconds to answer the question correctly, for which he or she will be given a point. Should the question not be answered or answered incorrectly a point shall be taken away. Then the moderator shall read the question completely and the opposing team shall have 15 seconds to answer the question, if they would like. If they buzz in they must answer the question correctly. They may also pass on the question if they would like. If after the moderator reads a question completely and one team buzzes in and answers the question incorrectly, the opposing team may have an opportunity to answer the question. The question, however, will not be repeated. The question must be answered correctly or a point or points will be deducted.
When 15 seconds have expired and neither team can answer the question, a judge
will announce the correct answer and the moderator will proceed to the next question.
AUDIENCE: Bible Bowl teams are encouraged to invite District supporters/audience to cheer for
their team. However, the audience must refrain from verbalizing answers or assisting teams in any way. Any form of cheating will result in disqualification from the competition.
CHALLENGE: If there is a dispute over a question or an answer, THE COACH AND ONLY THE
COACH MAY APPROACH THE JUDGES AT THE END OF A ROUND. ALL DISPUTES MUST BE MADE AT THE END OF EACH ROUND.
To properly challenge a question or answer, the coach should stand and remain standing until recognized by the panel of judges. The judges will hear the challenge and confer with each other. Judges may consult with the Bible Bowl Coordinator(s) for assistance with final decisions. THE JUDGES’ DECISIONS SHALL BE FINAL ON ALL MATTERS. Insubordination by any team member(s) or coach will result in disqualification from the Bible Bowl Competition.
Some of the places to find information about the Church Of God In Christ: YPWW topic for June 1991-‐August 1991, December 1996–Feb 1997, Mar 2001-‐ May 200l, Dec 2005-‐Feb 2006 and Sep 2008-‐Nov 2008. These are to be used as a study guide for the History of the Church. (You may write to the address below. Send $15 to cover coping and postage). You may also study the manuals of the different auxiliaries. Also use the Manual of the Church of God In Christ (the little black book). Another source for church history is the book “Charles H. Mason: Roots of the Church Of God In Christ” by Bishop Ithiel C. Clemmons and also the Official handbook of the Women’s Department. A source on the Church Doctrine is “Understanding Bible Doctrine as Taught in the Church of God in Christ” by Bishop P.A. Brooks and Charles Hawthorn. (Church bookstore in Memphis has these books or the bookstore of Bishop P. A. Brooks, Detroit, MI). Check out ALL OF THE COGIC Website. Know about the Leaders of our church past and present. Old Sunday School books are also an excellent source for the books of the Bible. You may also go to the Bible Bookstore and pick up a study of a particular book. STUDY TIP PLEASE DO NOT MAKE UP QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE. If you make up the questions, they will only study those questions. Have them take the book verse by verse and let them come up with the questions and answers. They need to come up with as many questions as they can. Have them come up with questions. Answer them and then turn those questions around and make another question. This can also be done with the History and the Doctrine.
