I stood before the mirror observing my reflection, and then I started to cry. What was once a flattering dress was now a tight and ill-fitting mess. This wasn’t the first time I had tried on clothes from my closet and found them to suddenly be uncomfortable, or too small. I was a sophomore in high school and had stopped growing vertically in junior high. I had, however, been growing horizontally ever since I stopped playing volleyball. Now it was undeniable: I was gaining more weight than I wanted.

For the five to six years that followed, I struggled with my body image. I often felt fat and unattractive, to the point that I could barely acknowledge when people complimented me. It didn’t help that I was comparing myself to images of supermodels in magazines, or my more naturally slim sisters. In college, I finally reached a breaking point. One night in my dorm room, I prayed to God, “Lord, I don’t want to struggle with this any longer. Please, heal my mind and heart. Let me see myself as You see me.”

The transformation didn’t occur overnight. Many times I believed that I would always be overly concerned with calories, exercise, or what the scale told me each morning. But soon, God slowly answered my prayer. Though there wasn’t a dramatic change in my outer appearance, there was much dramatic change in my thoughts and heart. My identity became defined less by what I looked like, and more by who God says I am. He has taught me that when I do what I was created for—to love and worship Him—I am beautiful in His eyes.

All people were created to worship God. But in Jesus’ time, lepers weren’t allowed to worship with their community because the highly contagious skin disease also made them ritually unclean. Sufferers were forced to live outside the city. If they came near people, they had to cry out a warning to keep others away. Identified solely by their illness, lepers were treated as social outcasts.

Luke 17:11–19 refers to the 10 men Jesus transformed while on His way to Jerusalem. Among the 10 lepers Jesus healed, one was a Samaritan. The Jews looked down on the Samaritans because they were half-Jewish and had different worship practices. Although connected through the mutual worship of Yahweh, the Jews treated Samaritans with contempt and considered them to be inferior because they weren’t pure-blood Jews. To be a Samaritan and a leper was to be the lowest of the low.

However, out of the 10 men who were healed, it was the Samaritan who returned with worship and praise for Jesus. When Jesus saw the man’s faith, He said, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well” (v. 19). In the Greek, the phrase “has made [you] whole” is from the root word “sozo,” which means “to be saved or healed.” While all the lepers had been saved physically from their disease, the Samaritan’s transformation went deeper. Jesus declared that the Samaritan had received salvation. He was given a new identity and made whole—completely and totally belonging to God.

In Galatians, Paul reminds us that our identity is based solely in Christ and His work in our lives. “There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (v. 3:28 HCSB). The things of our culture and society are no longer what unite and define us; we are given a new identity. In Christ there is no black or white, male or female, slave or free, rich or poor—only men and women who belong to God.

ENVIRONMENT: IDENTITYThis environment highlights who we are in Christ. According to Ephesians 1, we have been chosen, adopted, redeemed, sealed, and given an inheritance in Christ … all of which we did nothing to earn. This conviction allows children to stand firm against the destructive counter identities the world will offer.

The 10 environments guide us in creating a climate that puts God on display. Encourage your families to discover more about creating the environment of KNOWING in their homes by checking out HomeFront: A Spiritual Parenting Resource and Spiritual Parenting by Michelle Anthony.

As our world places labels on us, we fight against being categorized. We dislike being put in a “box.” We combat prejudice and discrimination. Fortunately, God has made a proclamation through Christ that transcends labels and brings transformation. Remember: You’ve been chosen, adopted, redeemed, sealed, and given an inheritance in Christ. This is your identity; this is what is true about you.

But going from knowing what is true to feeling it deep inside can be difficult. To help bridge this gap, look at yourself in the mirror for a few minutes. Go on. Using a dry erase marker, write on the mirror some words you feel currently make up your identity. When you’re finished, take some time to pray to God. Ask Him to show you which identities are in line with your identity in Christ, and which need to be healed or transformed. After praying, erase the words. Then write “(Your name), wholly and dearly beloved, child of God, created to worship Him with thanksgiving and joy.” Close your time by asking God to help you see and be the person He has created you to be.

Exploration stations create space intended for wonder—to pique children’s curiosity and allow them to engage in hands-on experiences as they begin their time in worship.

Station 1: Mirror, MirrorIn this part of The Big God Story, Jesus healed 10 lepers. As a result of their miraculous healing by Jesus, each man was given the freedom of a whole new identity. In this ExPLORE Station, children will discover the concept of an identity, and that they are children created by God.

SUPPLIES (per table)• small mirrors (purchase at craft store) or aluminum foil squares (4” x 4”; 1 per child)• tagboard or construction paper• glue• optional: masking tape• permanent marker• crayons, markers, or colored pencils• optional: stickers, beads, or glitter• ExPLORE bin

PREPARE AHEADIf using actual mirrors, cut tagboard into rectangles slightly larger than the mirror, to allow a one-inch border on each side. If using aluminum foil in place of mirrors, cut foil squares and slightly larger construction paper squares to allow for a one-inch border on each side. Gather all materials and place in an ExPLORE bin.

SET UPSet a mirror or square of aluminum foil at each child’s chair. Place the remaining materials in the center of the table.

ENGAGEWelcome kids to the ExPLORE Station. Invite them to explore the materials on the table. Encourage your leaders to be ready to step in and help the children as needed. Show the children how to glue a mirror (or piece of foil) to a piece of tagboard (or construction paper), leaving room around the edges as a frame. (Note: If using mirrors, add masking tape to protect against any potentially sharp edges.) Write the child’s name on the top of the frame. Invite the kids to decorate their framed mirror with things that describe who they are or what they like (suggestions: favorite sport, color, song, etc.). Introduce the idea of having different roles or identities, like student, sister, or friend. Ask the children open-ended questions. Who is in the mirror? What is something special about you? What do you like to do? What do you like to make? Who made you you? Have the kids present their “All about Me” mirrors to the group.

“Kids really like making the mirrors. We had mirrors for them to look into and asked them to describe what they

saw. We also asked about why God put them together

the way He did.”—Good Shepherd Church

“We had the kids make individual mirrors out of

tinfoil, which was a fun and effective way to show them

their identity.”—International Church of Las Vegas

“We liked the mirror idea. We added making it into a thank You card for

Jesus. ‘Thank You, Jesus, for making me.’ We had

them draw things they’re thankful for and enjoy about themselves on the card.”—Wooddale Church

(Optional) Station 2: Created for What? After Jesus healed the 10 lepers, only one man returned to thank and worship Him. By worshipping Jesus, the man was doing what God created him to do. In this ExPLORE Station, children will make things out of interlocking toy bricks designed for a specific purpose or use.

SUPPLIES (per table)• interlocking toy bricks• index cards• markers

PREPARE AHEADBefore the activity, take a little time to come up with different purposes or needs to build and write them on index cards. (For example, you might suggest the kids create something that could be used to get someone from school to home. The kids may make a car, airplane, bike, or skateboard.) Start with these ideas: something that helps you carry things; something that keeps you dry; something that you can sit on; something that can hold water.

SET UPPlace interlocking toy bricks out for kids to use. Give index cards to leaders.

ENGAGEWelcome kids to the ExPLORE Station. Explain to the children: We’ve provided toy bricks for you. You’re going to use these bricks to make things that will fulfill a specific need or purpose. I have some ideas on these cards that I’d like for you to try. Would someone like to make me something that will get me from school to home? Have multiple building projects going on at the same time to keep kids engaged. Ask the children to explain their creations when they’re finished making them.

Optional: Have the kids make things they imagine, and then have the other kids guess what the object is and how it’s used.

SUPPLIES• What’sIt: Megaphone (see optional image to show or print at tru.davidccook.com)

ASKWhat did you find in the wardrobe? A megaphone! What can you do with a megaphone? Children will answer. You can make your voice really loud. We can use a megaphone to give a message to someone who is standing far away from us. Hmmm … I wonder, how do you think a megaphone fits into today’s portion of The Big God Story? I think it’s time we find out. Do you know what time it is?

Note: Be sure to return the megaphone to the wardrobe. It will be used during storytelling.

What’sIt: Megaphone In Jesus’ time, lepers were supposed to cry out in a loud voice to warn people to stay away. When the 10 lepers came to Jesus, they stood at a distance and shouted, not to warn Jesus, but to ask for His mercy. After Jesus healed the lepers, only the Samaritan man returned, worshipping God in a loud voice. Loudly and proudly, the healed leper praised Jesus for all to see and hear. The megaphone will help us remember how the healed leper worshipped Jesus.

The Big God StoryLuke 17:11–19Storyteller

SUPPLIES• storytelling images: Village, 10 Lepers, Healed Leper (see tru.davidccook.com)• magnetic whiteboard, magnets, easel, red whiteboard marker• spray bottle filled with water, paper towel

PREPARE AHEADPrint storytelling images, cut out, laminate (optional), and attach magnets to the back of each. Using the red whiteboard marker, draw dots on the arms, legs, and faces of the 10 lepers. Place whiteboard on an easel and set downstage right or left.

ENGAGE(Welcome children. Lead them in a Prayer of Release.) Friends, each time we gather, we discover different parts of The Big God Story. The last time we were together, we heard how Jesus calmed a wild storm. He showed the apostles once again that He is God. What are some things you know are true about God? (Allow children a few minutes to share their thoughts about God.) Those are all such great thoughts. One of the things we know about God is that He has power over everything. Does He have power over the wind, waves, and the animals? (Children answer.) Yes, He does. We also know that He has power over illness. With just His words, He healed the Roman soldier’s servant. Is there anyone like God? (Kids answer.) No, only He has the power to do all these things—and so much more!

Jesus was traveling to the city of Jerusalem. As He came to a town … (place Village image on whiteboard) Jesus heard loud voices shouting to Him from a distance. (Tech: Cue Wardrobe of Wonder sound effect. Take megaphone from wardrobe.) Friends, we’ve found the What’sIt in this part of The Big God Story. Why do we use a megaphone? (Kids answer.) That’s right. We can use a megaphone to make our voices really loud. Hmmm … let’s keep going in this part of the story to see who needed to use a loud voice. (Using megaphone, say) “Jesus, Master, have pity on us.”

When Jesus turned to see who was calling to Him, He saw 10 lepers. They were sick with a disease called leprosy. (Add 10 Lepers image a distance from Village. Have kids help count men. Point to red dots on lepers.) People didn’t want to get close or touch lepers because they were afraid of getting sick, too. Because of this, the people who had leprosy had to live by themselves outside of town, away from their families, friends, and church. How would you feel if you were so sick you couldn’t be with your family or friends, or even go to church? (Children will answer; interact with their responses.) I would be sad and pretty lonely, too.

THE BIG GOD STORY is written for a 3 1/2- to 6-year-old audience. It can be told in its entirety for an older audience, but it may need to be shortened if your group is on the younger side.

“Our Storyteller made mini megaphones out of 3” cups for each child to have one.

She then incorporated them during the storytelling of the

lepers. She really liked the visuals; laminating the lepers and using a red erasable pen

worked great. She used the picture of the man returning

as a puppet, which really kept the kids engaged.”—Good Shepherd Church

“The kids liked to see the red leprosy dots appear and

disappear after Jesus healed them.”—Wooddale Church

Well, these men had heard all about Jesus. They knew He could heal them. So, when they saw Jesus, they shouted as loud as they could. Jesus loved the lepers and wanted to heal them. So He told them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” You see, the men needed to go see the priests. The priests would decide if someone had been healed and was well enough to return to his family. The lepers trusted Jesus’ words and had faith in Him. Friends, what is faith? (Allow kids to answer; interact with their responses.) Faith is when you believe something and then do something about it. The lepers had faith because they believed that Jesus would heal them, and then they did what He told them to do.

As they were on their way to see the priests, the 10 men were healed! (Spray laminated lepers image with water and wipe clean.) Wow! Who healed them? (Children answer.) Jesus did! Did He have to touch the men to heal them? (Kids answer.) No. Did Jesus have to say anything for them to be healed? (Children answer.) No! Jesus is God and He has power over everything. He took the illness away from the men. How do you think they felt? (Interact with answers.) Yes, they were so happy and excited. They were no longer known as lepers; they were healed men! They could go home to their families! They could give someone a hug! (Move lepers inside village; bring out Healed Leper image.) These men would no longer be known as lepers, but as the men who were healed!

One of the men who was healed returned to Jesus. He praised God in a loud voice. (Use megaphone again.) “Praise God who healed me!” When he got to Jesus, the man bowed at Jesus’ feet and worshipped Him. The man was so grateful and filled with worship for God. Why do you think the man had used a loud voice? (Interact with answers.) Yes! He wanted to worship Jesus with everything inside him, and he wanted everyone around to know that Jesus had healed him. Jesus saw that only one man came back to give praise to God. He said, “Weren’t all 10 healed? Where are the other nine? Didn’t anyone else return to give praise to God?”

Then Jesus said to the one who returned, “Get up and go. Your faith has saved you.” When Jesus said, “Your faith has saved you,” He didn’t just mean that the man’s skin had been healed. He also meant that his sins had been healed too! Jesus gave this man a whole new life—inside and out. He would no longer be known as the Samaritan leper, but as the man healed by God! The healed man knew that Jesus was worthy of worship because Jesus is God. By worshipping God, the man was doing what he was created to do.

I wonder … are we all created to worship God? Yes! We all belong to God, and He loves us! You know what God’s love makes me want to do? It makes me want to (use megaphone) SHOUT praise to God, just like the man who was healed of leprosy. And you know what, that’s exactly what we were created by God to do. We were made to SHOUT our praises to God. So let’s do it!

“Storyteller and kids loved seeing the spots on the

lepers disappear. It was easy and engaging.”—Voyagers Bible Church

Children have the opportunity to respond to God and to what they have heard and experienced through His Word. Special attention should be given to create space for the Holy Spirit to minister to each child.

SUPPLIES• Bible• optional: worship music of your choice (suggestion: TruWonder Bonus Song “Here We

Go,” The People’s Album, Vol. 3; see tru.davidccook.com for Premium, Unlimited, and Combo users; or iTunes)

• box of instruments (suggestions: drums, bells, hand clappers, toy trumpets, noise makers, etc.)

Worship-through-ResponseThe Bible is full of loud praises to God. Psalm 100:1 says, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.” And Psalm 98:4–6 says, “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp … and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—shout for joy before the Lord, the King.”

God loves us so much, and we belong to Him. We’re His kids! Because of this, we can worship Him with all of our hearts, minds, and bodies. Just like the man who was healed of leprosy, we can worship God in a loud voice. Why do you want to worship God? Allow kids to share reasons they want to worship God. Because of Jesus, we get to be with God forever and ever.

God created us to worship Him. There are many ways for us to worship Him. What are some of the ways we can worship God? Allow kids to share ways we can worship God; interact with their responses. We’re going to spend some time right now worshipping God. You may choose how you want to join us. You can dance, sing, shout, or sit quietly before God. We have a box of instruments if you would like to come take one. Encourage kids to look in the instrument box and find something to use during the musical worship time.

Connect: Get in the CircleSUPPLIES (per small group)• masking tape

SET UPUsing the masking tape, make a circle on the floor in the middle of the room, large enough for all the children in your small group to stand inside.

ENGAGEToday we learned how a leper had to stay out of his village and away from his family because he was considered unclean. When Jesus healed the lepers, they were allowed to go back to their families and homes, where they belonged. Before we choose to follow Jesus, we’re separated from God by our sin. Like the lepers, we can’t get close to God because our sin is in the way. But when we have faith in Jesus, He heals us of our sin. Just like the healed lepers, we can draw close to God. In fact, God pulls us deeper and deeper into His circle of love. Now we’re going to play a game showing us how God loves us and pulls us close to Him.

Choose a child to be “it.” Explain: The circle in the middle of the room represents God’s circle of love. The person who is it must run and tag all the other kids. When she tags another child, she’ll say, “You belong to God. Now get in the circle, where you belong!” Once all the children have been tagged, choose a new child to be it. If your space is small, change this to a walking version, or just have the children stand in place and be pulled into the circle.

ENGAGEToday we learned that Jesus healed 10 lepers of their skin disease, but only one came back to thank and worship him. Jesus healed that leper by forgiving him of his sins. Jesus gave him a new life, inside and out. As followers of Christ, we’ve all been given new lives in Jesus. Right now we’re going to share with one another our reasons for thanking and loving God.

Give each child a felt heart. Help each child write his name on his heart. Then, invite the children to stand and publicly give God thanks for something He has done in their lives. It’s okay if not every child wants to share. Consider creating a space or time for the kids to silently or quietly thank God for a blessing in their lives. When you sense the time of sharing coming to a close, help the children pin their thankful hearts of worship to the bedsheet, making a quilt of praise. Be sure to add this to your CREATE gallery for next week’s REMEMBER & CELEBRATE weekend.

Wonder QuestionsAs Jesus was traveling, a group of lepers called out to Him to heal them. Jesus loved them and wanted to help them. He told the 10 men to show themselves to the priests, for they were healed. Only one man returned to praise and worship Jesus. Because of this man’s faith, Jesus also forgave his sins, healing his life both inside and out.

I wonder … Why did only one leper come back to give praise to God?I wonder … How has Jesus changed my life?I wonder … How can I worship Jesus every day?I wonder … How does Jesus see me?I wonder … How can I show my faith in Jesus?

Premium, Unlimited, and Combo users can find a quarterly TruWonder Timeline and images of people corresponding to each week’s lesson at tru.davidccook .com. As you place the weekly people squares on the timeline, invite children to help you storytell. The provided questions will prompt further conversation about what children have been experiencing. They’ll enjoy watching as the timeline fills from week to week and their knowledge of The Big God Story grows.

Small Group Enhancements

“We used sticky foam hearts the kids could

decorate and then attach to the quilt. We actually used

canvas cut into 3’ x 4 ½’ pieces for our quilt instead

of the sheet. This worked great for displaying in the

rooms.”—Good Shepherd Church

“I thought this was a great response time for

small groups! I love to hear kids giving thanks to God.

Our kids were eager to give thanks and add their heart to

the quilt.”—Mount Paran North Church of God

A blessing can be a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words of encouragement and guidance. A blessing can be offered in order to ask God’s Spirit to overflow from the child’s life in such a way that blesses others, while it can also be prayed over a child for the purpose of declaring God’s protection, joy, or wisdom.

Children, God loves you so much. Because of Jesus, you can be with Him forever and ever! May you always worship Him with shouts of praise and thankful hearts.

God chose us to belong to Christ [Jesus] before the world was created. Ephesians 1:4 (NIrV)
