Mumbai: All 903 seats at IIT-Bom-bay were filled after the secondround of the joint seat allocationprocess that ended on Friday. At thispoint, 82 seats were vacant across 18IITs. These seats were allotted to stu-dents in the third round which be-gan on Saturday.
At the end of the second round onFriday, IIT-Delhi had one vacant seatwhile the ones in Kanpur and Chen-nai had two and six respectively. Of atotal of 10,006 seats, IITs managed to
fill up over 99% by the second round.The joint seat allocation process wasfor 85 government-funded technicalinstitutes (GFTIs), IITs and NITs in-cluded.
After the second round, most un-
filled seats were for bioscience engi-neering, mining engineering andpharmaceuticals, said an officialfrom the JEE (Advanced) IIT-Bom-bay office.
The 82 vacant seats include 32
seats from ISM-Dhanbad which ispart of the IIT admission process.The oldest IIT, IIT-Kharagpur has 13and IIT-Banaras Hindu Universityhas around 35 unfilled seats. Insti-tutes in Ropar, Jodhpur, Mandi and
Bhubaneshwar have around one un-filled seat each. The newer IITs at Pa-lakkad and Tirupati, which willstart their first batch this year, hadonly nine and three seats vacant af-ter the second round.
The premier institutes are confi-dent about filling all these seats bythe end of the third round on July 21.Around 1,000 students were given abetterment option in the third roundwhich started on Saturday. Some ad-missions were cancelled as studentsdid not meet class XII eligibility cri-teria and lack of caste certificates.
While IITs conclude admissionsafter round three, NITs will have afourth round to fill vacant seat-s.Close to 3,700 seats were vacant inNITs, IIITs and other GFTIs after thesecond round.
