SUNDAY TIMES OF INDIA, MUMBAI JULY 19, 2015 8 TIMES CITY Mumbai: All 903 seats at IIT-Bom- bay were filled after the second round of the joint seat allocation process that ended on Friday. At this point, 82 seats were vacant across 18 IITs. These seats were allotted to stu- dents in the third round which be- gan on Saturday. At the end of the second round on Friday, IIT-Delhi had one vacant seat while the ones in Kanpur and Chen- nai had two and six respectively. Of a total of 10,006 seats, IITs managed to fill up over 99% by the second round. The joint seat allocation process was for 85 government-funded technical institutes (GFTIs), IITs and NITs in- cluded. After the second round, most un- filled seats were for bioscience engi- neering, mining engineering and pharmaceuticals, said an official from the JEE (Advanced) IIT-Bom- bay office. The 82 vacant seats include 32 seats from ISM-Dhanbad which is part of the IIT admission process. The oldest IIT, IIT-Kharagpur has 13 and IIT-Banaras Hindu University has around 35 unfilled seats. Insti- tutes in Ropar, Jodhpur, Mandi and Bhubaneshwar have around one un- filled seat each. The newer IITs at Pa- lakkad and Tirupati, which will start their first batch this year, had only nine and three seats vacant af- ter the second round. The premier institutes are confi- dent about filling all these seats by the end of the third round on July 21. Around 1,000 students were given a betterment option in the third round which started on Saturday. Some ad- missions were cancelled as students did not meet class XII eligibility cri- teria and lack of caste certificates. While IITs conclude admissions after round three, NITs will have a fourth round to fill vacant seat- s.Close to 3,700 seats were vacant in NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs after the second round.
