We have had a number of people begin and continue to attend church as a direct result of that outreach.

When we first

started analyzing the/ , 7- amount of work that

I ^ would have to be donej to make the Centre

U Mutualista auditor-m V ium usable and pre-I 1 sentable, we realized

^ that we would need a^ lot of help! That help

has come in the form

of several short-term mission teams from

different churches that have come to La Romana

and made an impact on both the physical andspiritual levels. We hosted teams in the lastquarter of 2004 from the following locations:

Northeast Christian Church Louisville, KY

Broadway Christian Church Mattoon, ILOld Union Church of Christ Danville, IL

We worked with the three teams on the following

projects:

❖ Remodel and enlarge the surgical unit atthe Centre Mutualista Clinic

❖ Host medical, dental, and orthopedicoutreach programs for the community thatreached several hundred people

❖ Repair and plaster extensive parts of the— roof-in-the-Centro Mutualista building

❖ Rewire and repair electrical grid in thebuilding

❖ Install lights at one of the local public

schools, where church members have

children attending

❖ Install night lights for security at thechurch

❖ Built a triple crib for the nursery

❖ Painted and prepared new Sunday Schoolroom

❖ Built twenty children's benches for SundaySchool and Junior Worship areas

❖ Marvin Flowers from Broadway conducteda two-session workshop on "Dealing WithConflict In the Local Church" which was a

real blessing for church members.

Our thanks to ^ ^all the teams and •

their leaders. We " -;A

had a wonderful

team and look

Couples Night Out!

One of the most popular events that has been planned recently was a Couples Night where we hadalmost 25 couples come to our home and share a time of fellowship, games, prayer, and encouragement. For many, it had been a long time since they had been out by themselves, leaving the kids with ababysitter. It was a fun night as they played The Newlywed Game (Dominican Version) and it wasinteresting to see which couples really knew each other and which ones did not. Cristina Martinez is theSpecial Events coordinator and did a great job organizing and promoting the event. One of Suzanne'sroles is helping Cristina organize and plan long-term for interesting and motivating outreach events.

^ Shoes, Shoes, Shoes!)We received a $500 donation in August

from one of the weeks of camp at Little Galilee

Christian Assembly in Clinton, IL and decidedto use it to help some of the students thatattend the church. One of the biggest expenses

that families have in their preparation for the

new school year is getting new school shoes. With the funds that were donated we were

able to purchase 39 pairs of shoes for somevery happy students! Los Muchachos is one ofthe leading shoe stores in the country and theywere very helpful and gave us a nice discountwhen we explained what we were doing.

Thanks campers at Little Galilee!!Here are some happy young ladies getting their schoolshoes!

More Baptisms!

We've had several baptisms in the past three months! One of the young men in the church, Euri, stopped by the church one day on his way to computer class at the vocational school in the same building complex. He was curious about what all the activity was going on at the property. Suzanne was ableto explain to him about the church and he was interested. He happened to live about three blocks fromone of the church families and they just happened to have teenage sons that are about the same ageand they have made a great friendship with Euri. His younger brother, Frank, is coming regularly andmade his public confession of faith a few Sundays ago and will be baptized soon. Euri's mother is alsoinvolved in a weekly Bible study with Ivelisse Santana from the church so the Lord is opening a lot ofdoors

privilege of leading him in the Bible StudyNetwork for several months and after the |14'^ lesson, Eladio gave his heart to the ^Lord and was baptized recently. ^

We also rejoice at the baptisms of iRuben Santos and his wife Ana, and their

oldest son Cristian recently. Suzanne met

Ana at the Centro Mutualista clinic one j^i^k baptizing Eladio Vargas in La Romana.day when Ana's brother was hurt in anaccident. They struck up a conversation that led to an invitation to visit their home and begin the BibleStudy Network. Both Ruben and Ana have been baptized and are serious about turning their lives overto the Lord and seeking His will. We're thrilled to see their growth and involvement in the church andoutreach projects. Ruben recently underwent some surgery and the church has responded to differentneeds the family has and they are thrilled to see the Body of Christ respond as it has.

Rick and Suzanne York, 09:10 AM 3/7/2005 -0300, Greetings from La Romana Page 2 of 2

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Greetings once again from the Dominican Republic! Suzanne and Iare doing verywell and trying to catch ourbreath after a lot of activities in the church work here. We just had a team from the Northeast Christian Churchin Louisville that had four things going on at the same time. They brought a surgical team, a dental team, aconstruction team and a sound man so we were in a whirlwind of projects that all came together beautifullyduring the week. The sugical team had 27 surgeries lined up by one of the center's surgeons. Dr. Cecllio de laRosa. The team was able to use the remodeled sugical unit and at the center and also use the anthestesiamachines that the Jewish Hospital in Louisville donated.

The dental team was led by Dr. Priscilla Bondand they checked the students and teachers at the local publicschool near the church, the same school to which we provide weekly Bible class materials. She checked over470 students on the first couple of days and then treated the most urgent cases. Her team was a big hit andsuch a blessing for the families of the students and teachers. The students prepared a special "Thank You"programcomplete with singingand speeches- the dental team was in tears by the time itended!

The construction team was able to make a division for one of the classrooms, got the counter space made fora cafeteria project the church is undertaking at the center and also built a sound/control cabin for the soundequipment the church recently purchased thanks to the faith promise offering from Johnson BibleCollege.Speaking of sound- we have beautiful new sound equipment in the church auditoriumand does itever soundgreat!! Geoff Gittle from Northeast was on the team and he went with some of the leadership team here to getthe equipment we needed in Santo Domingo. Sound guys are allalike the world around. Geofftalked with thesound people in Santo Domingo, but they didn't use Spanish or English-they spoke Sound- a new language!!Hertzs, ohms, bananas, flyware, mixers, powers, etc. Itwas great!

Geoff has also trained three or four of our young men how to use the equipment and they have already takenover and have their own rules and regulations!! The sound Sunday evening for church was wonderful!

All the activity has been exciting, but the most exciting event happened yesterday morning with 7 peopleresponding to God's call through baptism. We had a couple of young teenage guys along with one lady vyho is agrandmother in her 70's-it was a blessed day for sure.

I think we've mentioned Genaro Ozuna before- he was the guard at the center who has a prosthetic leg. One ofthe doctors from Northeast raised the funds for a new leg for him-his other one was about 25 years old. Genarorecently had a severe stroke and has suffered some significant damage. He can't talk and the right side of hisbody has very little strength so he cannot walk either. He's at his family's home near the center and really needsyour prayers. Many of you who have been here may remember him.

Emily and Laurie are doing very well. Lauriesurprised us with a short visit in February- she and a coworker-Monica Benvenides came for a long weekend- they got tickets for about $220 from New York City. The packedin a lot of things into just three days! Emily is starting to plan her semester in Indiafor the fall! She's excited andalso glad that another classmate is also going to India so they will be able to room together even though theyare working in different projects. Emily was here over Christmas and we really enjoyed having her.

Suzanne and Iare doing well. I have been battling a lingering cold for the past couple of weeks, but the USdoctors gave me some antibiotics so Iam finally feeling better. Our apartment is nearing completion- probably acouple of months away. We should be able to move in slowlyso we won't kill ourselves trying to get thingsmoved.

VictorJimenez and his wife Yudermy are really fitting in nicely at the church. Everyone is beginning to look toVictor as the lead Pastor and that's exactly what we want. He's got great people skills and is a strong leaderwithout being overbearing. We're thrilled that they are doing so well. We're beginning to examine where the Lordis leading for the next church plant here in the eastern section of the country and would covet your prayers forthis process. Pray that the Lord will lead us to the city and section of that city that will be responsive to theGospel.

Thank you all for your prayers and support-our work here would not be possible without you!

In Christ,

Rick and Suzanne York

Dear Friends In Christ,

It seems like years since I last sent out an e-mail update about the workhere in La Romana and the eastern part of the country! We have been especiallybusy and are just now beginning to catch our breath after a very busy summer.

We're especially pleased with the growth of the work here, both in newconverts and also in the maturing process of the body of Christ in La Romana. We're seeing the leadership here take more and more responsibility and initiativeto reach people that are outside of Christ. We're seeing people inviting andbringing friends and relatives to church and that is especially encouraging.

We've got some projects here that are getting underway. We just signed aten-year lease with the Centro Mutualista to help develop the physical propertythey have and turn it into a real community-impacting center that it was alwaysmeant to be. We're excited about this open door but the responsibility is alsovery large. We have at least 8 separate projects that will take several years tofinish and a lot of US church help. Please contact us for a more detailed list ofthe projects that we would love for your church to undertake!

Part of the maturation process for the church in La Romana is oursystematic release of leadership and authority so that the Dominican leadershipcan function on their own. We have begun that process and have a time-line upthrough April of 2006, when we'll be traveling to the US on a short furloughthrough September 2006. We're praying for direction about which town to headto next, basing ourselves here in La Romania. We want to be able to continuehelping with the growth of the church here but in the "background" so to speak,as we start a new project.

We just had our annual Eastern Dominican Christian Mission Board meeting

Printed for Georgia Sharpe <[email protected]> 8/23/2005

here and it was a great time of reflection and anticipation. We appreciate theefforts of aii the board members to get here and participate. We foiiowed thatmeeting with three more days of meeting with the Dominican ieadership team.We were abie to set the scheduie and themes for the next four months at churchand different outreach ideas and events.

Three big prayer requests this morning. Two of the men in church, EddyMarte and Fernando Medina have serious heaith issues. Eddy has had high bioodpressure for several years and last week had the beginnings of a stroke. Hisspeech was affected but he has recovered a lot but will stiii need some speechtherapy. One of his ministries is a nightly radio program so that has beenseriously affected! Fernando is the husband of one of our members and has notyet confessed Christ. He has had very serious problems with his cholesterol andis set to have a "stent" placed in one of his arteries so that the biood can flowbetter. This illness has brought him much closer to the Lord so pray as everyoneministers to him, that he might accept Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Our older daughter Emily, is leaving for Thailand this afternoon and will bethere until December, working with Habitat for Humanity as part of her graduateprogram from Eastern University in Philadelphia. Please pray for safety and agreat learning experience!

Our younger daughter, Laurie, is doing well in her job at the Bronx DistrictAttorney's office and is looking for a new apartment with one of her long-timefriends from school here, Wendy Espinai.

Suzanne and I are doing well- actually exercising on a fairly regular basis! Our new apartment is very comfortable and we have room for guests so pleaseplan to come visit!

Thanks for all your prayers and support. May the Lord continue to bless you andyour families.

November 2005 / Volume 31. Number 2

Dear Friends in Christ,

Greetings once again from the DominicanRepubhc. Suzanne and I are excited to beable to share the news of the Lord's work in

the eastern section of this country. We satdown the other day to make a list of theinformation we wanted to share and we will

have to eliminate some of the items because

so much is going on or has happened sinceour last newsletter.

Ten Year AgreementSigned with the

Centre Mutuaiista!

We're happy to report that we just signeda ten-year agreement with the CentreMutuaiista in La Romana to continue to use

the auditorium and other areas of the

complex and to help the Board of Directorsthere to develop the full potential of theproperty. We have a hst of eight differentmajor projects that we hope to see finished inthe next ten years. The idea is to develop theproperty into a real community-basedoutreach that will impact the lives of thoseliving in the area both spiritually emd as acommunity. Some of the projects are:

• A multi-purpose covered gymnasium

• Dormitory rooms and ofl&ces forEastern Dominican Christian Mission

• A community library

• Vocational schools

• A computer center

Please be praying for these projects as theLord leads US church work teams here to

help with these projects, and many more.

^Advanced Training Classes^Now Offered in La Romana[

One of the greatest needs of growing missionworks aroimd the world is better training for nationalleaders. The quest for training sometimes presentsmore problems than solutions! For example, we havefour, married leaders in the La Romana church whohave each expressed a real desire to study theology/scripture at a deeper level. It's impossible for any ofthem to think of leaving their families, all withchildren at home, to go to the USA or somewhere elseto study for four years to get a Bible College degree.None of them speak English well enough to douniversify level classes in English. Plus, when wehave sent students in past years, as often happens inother mission fields as well, they never return!

Our best hope is to develop a program here thatcan be used in any cormtry. We're working with one ofthe Christian colleges in the US now to develop a 16-course program that will allow the students to stay intheir respective countries and complete this course ofwork with teaching and supervision done by themissionaries on the field. Certain academic

requirements will be in place for the missionaries andstudents as well as a set curriculum to be followed in

order to give validity to the program. We started inMay and offered "The Book ofActs" and "Bible Lifeand Times" and we had 7 students complete the firsttwo courses. They really enjoyed the challenge andthe learning experience. They had papers to do,quizzes to take and exams to prepare for. We are nowin our second section with "Introduction to the

Gospels" and "Old Testament History". As always, the professor leams as much as his/her students!Suzanne is the organizational brains behind thisendeavor, working on the syllabi and coordinating theSpanish texts to match the Engfish texts used in thestates. PleEise be in prayer for this project. WeH bemeeting with college leaders emd other missionariesat the National Missionary Convention in Atlanta inNovember to further promote this program.

Eastern DominicanChristian Mission Board

Meets in La Romana!

We were especially pleased to have several members of the boardhere in July and August for oiu* annual Board meeting. Carol Finley, from Danville, IL was here on vacation with her family in July andthen four of the Board Members were here in August for three days ofmeetings with us. The members attending were:

• Joni Colle, from West Side Christian Church in Springfield, IL

• Larry Travis, from Plum Creek Christian Church in Butler, KY

• Randy Gordon, from NOTtheast Christian ChurchrtirtzniisviileT"KYand

• Neil Webster, also from Northeast Christian Church

We discussed the past two years and reviewed our missionstatement, goals, and plans of action for the next year. Probably themost important topic of discussion was the plans for expansion of thework in the eastern part of the country. We have been prajdng aboutthis decision for a long time and really feel the leading of the HolySpirit to the Bavaro/Punta Cana area on the far eastern tip of thecountry. This is the center of the tourist area. The economy there isbooming and jobs are plentiful. More and more Dominicans are movingto that area to be able to work there and there are very fewestablished churches. Our game plan is to continue to live in LaRomana and when we get back from furlough in the fall of 2006 toestablish an office in that area and begin spending 3 days a week thereand begin making contacts for the Bible Study Network that has beenso effective here in La Romana. The next step would be to recruit ayoung Dominican couple to move there to lead the work and try to

these plans and that the Lord will open doors in that area in the nextyear or so.

New Board

^ Rick and Suzanne Move Into New Apartment ^We began looking for a place to purchase shortly after we arrived here in September of 2003. We

found a new apartment being built in a nice section of town so we started the process of negotiations andmade a down payment in December 2003. The apartment was supposed to be done by the end of August2004, but the Dominican reality is not the same as in the USA so we were able to move in by the end ofMay, 2005. It's very comfortable and we are getting things organized, little by little. We've already hadseveral guests and would love to host you some time.

We were asked to start some English classes for the medical personnel at the Centre Mutualistawhere the church also meets. We are having classes twice a week for 90 minutes each class and havehad a consistent group of 12-15 students. Almost all the ones that have stuck with the program areprogressing nicely and have learned a lot. We try and vary the classes and make the students speak inEnglish. We also try and make it fun and the students really enjoy the classes. It's also a great time forus to get to know the people on a more personal level and share what we believe and what the churchis doing in the community.

Family News

Our older daughter,Emily, arrived in Bangkok,Thailand at the end of

August, where she will bespending the next severalmonths working withHabitat for Humanity. She isdoing her internship for herMaster's Degree fromEastern University and willfinish and graduate inDecember, Lord willing. She'll be working in theareas that were affected bythe tsunami in January andtraveling to different areas ofSoutheast AsiaT We're still

able to keep in touch via e-mail and phone so it doesn'tseem that she is so far away!

Laurie was able to visit

over Labor Day weekend andwe enjoyed her short stay. She continues to do well at

her work with the Bronx

District Attorney's office as aCrime Victim's Advocate.

She got very high ratings onher first yearly evaluation. Both Emily and Laurie willbe here for Christmas, anunexpected treat!

Leadership TeamContinues to Mature

We were able to have a couple of special events with ourleadership team in the past few months. We attended theannual conference in Santo Domingo that is sponsored by theWillow Creek Association concerning the church's impact onthe local community. This year's theme was entitled 'TheButterfly Effect" and was based on the scientific idea and lawthat every action has a reaction. The movement of a butterfly'swings in the jungles of the Amazon has an effect on the wholeearth, even though it may be very small and hard to measure. Our work as a church has an effect on the community we livein and how we affect the community should be of utmostconcern to the local church.

We also had a short three day retreat with our leadershipand their families at one of the local hotels in Punta Cana.

That was a lot of fun and a great time of relaxation andplanning for the next six months.

Two Special Projects Completed!!!

A team from Northeast Christian Church in Louisville was

here the first week of October and one of the big goals was toinstall a video projection system. Good plan, but the newprojector the team brought would not work!! After muchscrambling suid phone calls they were able to locate anotherone in Santo Domingo and got it installed and working. It is sonice-all the songs and announcements are now projected onthe big screen. Thanks Northeast!

Northeast helped with part of the cost and EasternDominican Christian Mission spent $2500 on the project.
