7th Annual CIY Youth Campa Huge SuccessThere are times in your life when a certain decision or area of ministry has obviously been led andblessed by God. It's always a great feeling when

that happens. We felt the Lord's leading duringour 7th CIY-sponsored youth camp on February27 - March 2. Just after Christmas I received thenews that the camp we were planning on usinghad to cancel our reservation d ue to a schedulingconflict. We had 6 weeks before camp, but noplace to have camp ~ e xc ep t our property inSa lcedo.

We began t o think about what might be donethere . The church leaders decided that we shouldgo ahead and try, warning everyone that wewouldhave a very rustic weekend. We were able to getth e ro of on th e second dorm a n d b at hr oom fi xtures and showers installed there. We boughtmorefoam mattresses and got th e kitchen ready to cookfor 200 people

The blessings really startedwhen Gary and CindyKlein were able to purchase 180 chairs from aclosed Chinese Restaurant in Santo Domingo forabout $11 US for each chair. They arc of excellentquality and will last fo rseveral years. Gary andhi s family also spent aweek up at the campproperty making ajungle gym, gettinglights in the new dormand making a couple ofbeautiful picnic tablesThanks, Kleins, for allyour work We contacted one of our goodmissionary friends,Gayle Grisbee, here in

Santiago, and he loaned us a huge tent that seatsabout 300 people. When the CIY team go t here,we put them to work getting the tent set up at thecamp proper ty.We reallydid not expect a big group, simplybecause each one of the preachers had warned everyone that it was not going to be too comfortable. We all prayed that it would not rain, and allwe got was a slight drizzle for a couple of hourson March 1. The Lord blessed u s w ith over 225people in attendance and great fellowship. Everyone was so proud that we were having camp onour own property The food was great. The greates t blessing came on Saturday evening and Sundaymorning when a total of 25 young people cameforward to accept Christas theirSavior, 15 of themwere baptized on Sundaymorning and the rest willreceive some more teaching before being baptized

Everyone is so exc it ed about our nex t camp, which will be August 15-17, Family Camp. We rea little scared now the word is ou t h ow nice th ecamp is We're thinking we'll have 400-500 forthe next camp We do have several work teamscoming this summer to work on this project. Wehope to get the kitchen and cafeteria roofed andth e floors poured and also pour the basketball/volleyball court. We plan to make 140 bunk beds also,so i t wi l l b e a busy s umme r

    Number One

There is o ne n ee d th at h asbeen a burden on our heartsfor the past several years thatw e a re de te rm ined to see fu lfilled this year, Lord willing.Dr. Jesus Peha Dume has agrowing work in the Herrerasection of Santo Domingo, with over 80 in a t tendance o nSundays. They have beenmeeting in his medical offices

t s u n b e ^lievable how many people canfi t in one small area. The mainoffice area is a b o u t 12 f e e twide by 18 feet long. They.seat about 45-50 in th ere an dt h e r e s t si t o r s t a n d outs ideduring the services. TheyholdSunday School in anothersmaller office and Dolores, Dr.Pena s wife , leads that class fort h e chi ldren. We need to get a good pieceof property for th is churchBoth Gary and I are makingthis project our number onepriority for 1997. Once we getthe property, the church isready to begin digging thefooting ^The^r have~been-sav=ing their offering money andare ready to get to work. ^ACampus Housein Santo DomingoThe blessings just keep coming Pedro and Griselle Abreu havebeen leading in a campus ministry at the Autonomous University

of Santo Domingo for the past several years. Theyhavenever hada permanent location, renting one of the museum s auditoriumsfor Sunday services only. They have had a wonderful impact onthe lives of a number of students, but they have always needed apermanent location near the university. Few of the students herehave access to automobiles so location is a real keyin any ministrywith college students.

The Greenford Christian Church in Greenford, Ohio, is rommit-tedto helping this ministry find a permanent csunpushdiise. Pedro,Gary and I foimdwhat we think to be the ideal location at a pricethe Greenford church can handle. It is only one block south of themain entrance to the university and is surroimded by student housing where several thousand students live. It's a block away alsofrom two of the main bus routes in town. The Lord has openedthis door and we're excited about taking the next step. We shouldknow in a few dayswhether the financinghas solidifiedto buy thisproperty. The property is large enough to be divided into livingquarters for Pedro and his family and officesfor the campus house;plus, the mainmeeting area has room for at least 125 people to sitcomfortably Please be praying for this project. We are really excited to see the Lord s direction in al l o f this.

Next Step for CampExpansion jThere are two adjacentplaces ofpropertylo bur camp propertythat are for sale. I havemadea verbal commitmentto one and puta 10 down paymenton the other. The total price for both piecesis 10,000US. Suzanne's home church, the Central ChristianChurch, in Ironton, Ohio, just called Sunday, March l6th, to let us

know that they are committed to raising the funds for that project.I reallydid not know where or how the Lordwas going to providefor this need, but I knew that, if it was Hiswill, the money wouldbe there. Isn't the Lord good? Isn t He faithful?

This new property will allow us to put the chapel on one andtwo dorms, a boys' dorm and family dorm, plus a playground, onthe other. What was a dream for the churches just 3 years ago isbecoming a reality. What was a banana field is quickly becoming aplace where many lives are being changed by Christ What a blessing

    Pennsylvania ChurchKnocks Down Some Walls

We had a group in February from the Christian Church at Cogan Station, PA working on theexpansion of one of t he chu rche s i n Mao. BudYoder is the preacher there; a team of 7 mencame and completely renovated th e church.

The building was a house divided down themiddle by a block wall. They knocked down thewall, put a new roof on the parsonage, put newwindows in both the parsonage and the churcha new front door in the church and a ne w bathroom fo r the parsonage and redid th e kitchentoo - in 6 d ys Plus they preached every nightand saw over 20 people converted

We really appreciate Bud and hi s church. Thiswas their third building project in the last 3 yearsand what a blessing they have been to us andth e c hu rc he s h ere

New Church Star tedin Yalle Hondi ta

The Christian Church in Las Canoas, which youread about in recent newsletters recently gavebirth to a daughter congrega tion in ValleHondita a r ur al a re a about 8 mile s f rom LasCanoas in the southern part of th e country. Bro.Miguel Ignacio Cruz and Bro. Milo Hernandez areleading in this new work and Gary Klein is organizing the construction of the church.

One of th e church members recently donatedland for the church building. The land however was on a li tt le knoll and the only way youcou ld bui ld o n i t w s to bul ldoze th e knol l ndlevel it off. Getting a bulldozer in a fairly remotearea o f th e DR like Valle Hondi ta seemed a lmostimpossible. However the Lord is Lord and whenwe got to the little town one of the first thingswe saw was a huge bulldozer It seems there isan Italian engineer married to one of th e girls inth e village, who just happened to be t he re andjust happened to be willing to do the job for5000 pesos - about 350

I just talked to Antonio de l a Cruz our construction foreman, and he had just returned fromthere. They have the foundation laid and aboutfive lines of block laid. Lord willing, Gary willlead a church from Texas in June to finish thisproject.

Praying with new converts at Valle Hondita.

ffigh SchoolWe were a couple of very

proud parents to see Emilygraduate onJune 6 from SantiagoChristian School. She was partof the largest graduating classin the history of the school andhas done very well, graduatingwith h on or s a nd a 3.65 CPAover her four years in HighSchool.

She has been accepted at Lincoln Christian College and willleave here with Suzanne on August 14 to go to Ohio and thenon to Lincoln , IL . P le as e remember her in your prayers asshe starts college. You mightremember us as sh e will be sofar away, but we're surethe Lordwill watch over her . She already knows a lot of students atLCC because of their ]nvj)Ive-men t i n th e work here. We realso thril led to have our goodfriends and forwarding agents.Ken and Jan Rutledge, living andworking in Lincoln so they cankeep an eye on her, too

Emily is spending most of thesummer working in Salcedowith th e work teams at camp, helping in the construction andtranslating for everyone ^

    1996-97 School Yeara Blessing

We had another good yearat Santiago Christian Schoolwith a record enrollment of420 students. We anticipateabout the same number thisyear, Lord willing. We arein the middle of a couple ofconstruction projects that Iam also overseeing -- a new

Theater Arts Bui ld ing andremodeling of the offices andteachers' lounge, with a newTeachers Resource roombeing added on.

We hav e a lmo st all o f ourteachers fo r nex t y ea r.Suzanne will no t be teaching next year, for the firsttime in several years. Sheis in t h e m idd l e o f an M.A .program from Azusa PacificUniversity and will be working on that and also have

some time to visit with hermother in Ohio, Lord willing.Overseeing the school andthe mission work is especially hectic in the summer,so please pray for some extra strength and endurancefor me right now. Laurie hasbeen working as a Teacher'sAide this summer in summerschool and does an excel lentjob.

New Pickup Truck Purchasedfor Miss ion Work

We ve been in need of a new pickup for alongtime. My 1987Nissanhasabout 150,000miles on it an d those are Domin ican mi les -with bad r oa ds a nd h ot weather. I t h as ha dsome motor troubles for several weeks and itfinally gave up the ghost about a month agoon the way toSantoDomingo. I amhavinga

used mo tor installed and we l l use it th e restof the summer at camp and then try and sellit. I was able to get a 1996 Chevy S-10, thefirst time I ve ever boughtan American truckon the mission field, but the price was cheaperand the quality has improved a lot. It s beenused a lot already and has really come inhandy.

New PropertyPu rchas ed f or Churchin Santo Domingo

Ourworking relationshipand cooperationwithGary and Cindy Klein continue tobe a blessingfor the work here. Gary was able to ra ise thefunds to purchase land for the church that SantoCicil io minis ters with on the eastern side of thecapital, Santo Domingo.

We were able to build the parsonage there in1993-94 and had been hoping to get some landnearbyfor thechurch thatmeetsin Santo's home.Fortunately, whenGary raised the funds, the lotrightnextdoorto Santocameup for saleand thedeal w a s made .

Many thanks to al l of th eteams

We were able to ge t the walls, floor and roof on the dining halland th e t russes up for theki tchen . We should be able topurchase the roofing fo r the

k i tchen i n the next few months .The cos t for that will be about 2,000U S. We were also ableto f in ish the basketball/volleyball court and have both basketball goals up. That reallyprovides a great area for recreation for the young people whenthey come to camp.

We also were able to ge t 5light poles installed and wired. My cousin Kyle Finley led theteam from Old Union Churchof Christ in Danville and got thepoles up. What a sight that wasas they got the poles of f thet ruck and into the ground and

Kyle went zooming up the poleswith his climbing gear. If youwant to see a funny video, haveKyle show you the clip of metrying to climb one of the polesFortunately for me, I wasn'tvery high up when I sl id down

What a blessing to have thepoles up. About two weeks afte r they were instal led, the Dominican government installedpoles from the highway right upto our property. So, all we'rewaiting for now is fo r thosepoles to have the wires installedand we should have electricity.

Next summer is already filling up. In fact we only have acouple of dates that are not takenyet. If your church is interested in coming next summer, please contact me as soon as

    Family CampBREAKSCamp Record

We planned Family Camp for August 15-17 and expected about 300-325 people ~ but not all of those tosleep at the camp. I knew we weregoing to be crowded when twochurches brought about 60 peopleand came a day early - they weretoo excited to stay home anotherday We ended up with about 425people We only had 265 mattresses, so a lot of people shared amattress, bu t everyone had a greattime. Two of the biggest needs rightnow at the camp are bunk beds andw in dow s f or th e dorms .

W e need t o bu il d 140 b u n k bedsEach bed will cos t about 125.00US to build. Won't you please cons ider being one of our supportersthat helps get one of these bedsmade? We really need your helpon this project. The t wo d orms t ha t are under roofhave a total o f 32 windows. Eachwindow will cost 140.00 US tohave made . T h e total f or t he se twoprojects is 2-1,980US. That seemslike an impossible amount, but theLord is faithful. W e have s ee n howHe has provided over and over againthrough generous churches and individuals so t ha t H is wor k c an c ontinue. We've had two camps at theproperty this year and already over50 people have accepted Christ asSavior and been baptized Thinkof how the camp will be used whenit is functioning full time for theL o r d s service P le as e u se t h eenclosed envelope for your contribution for these two projects.

We did have a court date on October 16th,but it was postponed until December 16th, so we have a coupleof months more to look forward to dealing with this.

Blessings have come as a result of this problem. Our preachers are more unified than ever. We have spent a lot more timein prayer and almost everyone has fasted at some time duringthis problem. We are sure that the Lord is in control of thesituation

[ Emily Off To CoUegdIt seems like only yesterday that Emily set off for

her first day of first grade, after having Kinder athome with Suzanne. I remember her posing for apicture with her blue and red uniform on and herZipper Cat stuffed animal under her arm How thetime flies She left for Lincoln Christian College onAugust 13th with Suzanne. I didn't have a chanceto get too emotional because they were supposed toleave on t he 14th, but when we came home a t noonon the 13th, Suzanne greeted us with the news thattheir flight to Miami the next day had been cancelled They rushed around and got ready to leaveand we left 45 minutes later and made the 3:20 flightto Miami. When we got to the airport, there were11 charter flights leaving about the same time andthe line for immigration was hundredsofpeople deep.We decided the When in Rome, do as the Romansdo which means we cut in line just like all the otherDominicans were doing. All of the tourists werefrom Europe and too polite to say anything

She is doing very well and enjoying college lifeand getting good grades She will be coming homeat Christmas. Her e-mail at college is [email protected] and I know she would enjoy hearingfrom you. We're able to communicate almost dailyvia e-mail, which makes it seem like she is a lotcloser than she is .
