MEDICAL EVANGELISM PROGRAMCONTINUES TO IMPACT CHURCHES

number of baptismsthat the preacher, Bro. Frederico Rodriguez haprepared. The program is working sowelbecause o several reasons:1. The pro

gram meets aneed in the community and showth e non-christiacommunity thathe church careabout the people

2.There is aneffect ive followup program thacalls the people torepentence and asks themto make

decision.3. The program is organizedand oriented to the local churchBenevolent programs are good anneeded but what is most importanis winning people to Christ Benevolent programscome and go buth e church remains and if thchurch is strong then the community benefits in a number of w ysGary travels once a month tPuerto Rico to fulfill his duty in thAir National Guard and receiveand organizes all of his medicinethere.

Gary and Cindy Klein continueto do an outstanding job with themedical evangelism program of theChristian Churches here. Gary wasby on June 9th on his way to a clinic in Barrero and reported that in the past6 months they havehad 248 deci sions o rChrist What a blessing for the churchesand such an encouragement for them asthey labor with us tosee the churches

The program is usually a threeday trip to one of the localchurches. The first evening theteam shows th e Jesus movie onVCR and there is usually standingroom only in the church. The second day is dedicated to the medical work. The team givesvaccinations in the morning andsees patients in the afternoon andevening. After the clinic is finished,or even while it continues in th eevening, some of the team membershave a preaching service . months, debt free Please use the enclosed envelopefor your gift. We appreciate your help.LEADERSHIP TRAINING A KEYTO CONTINUED GROWTHWe continue to emphasize that well trainedleaders are the bright hope of the churchhere in theDominican Republic and around Latin America Weare not able to send many of our young men to theStates for training and, I believe, that is probably for

th e best It might sound strange but I think it's true. The temptation for a young man to want to stay inthe States andmake a life for himself is so strongthat it takes a very focused young man to come backhome to work. In addition, if that young man doesnot have support from a Stateside church, when hegets back to his third world home after living in theU.S. for four or five years and discovers that thelocal church can't support him and he's going to haveto find a secular job, for which he has no training, itbecomes a very difficult situation. Our emphasis continues to be on training ourleaders, while they are leading the churches. We'redoing this with our LeadershipTraining Seminars, wbere our church leaders and preachers come fromthroughout the island to Santiagooncea month for8-10 hours of class over a Friday evening andSaturday. They eat and sleep at the Christian Churchand School in Arroyo Hondo. Pastor and Maria dela Cruz are responsible for the preparation of thefood, which is a big help for me. We have beenaveraging about 85 leaders each month This means Iam able to see every preacher fromevery church atleast once a month, saving me a lot of travel time tothe churches that are several hours from Santiago. We're spending about 400 a month for the programbut it's the bestmoney we spend eachmonth We'redoing New Testament studies this year and in 1994will do the L ife of Christ. In 1995 and 1996 we l l doOld Testament studies, Lord willing.Esperanza Church Needs PropertyWe've got a problem with the ChristianChurch in Esperanza but it's the kind ofproblem that

we're happy to see The folks there have been on firefor the Lord and the church continues to grow

monthly to the point that they are having a hardtimfitting inthebuilding they are using now forthechurch One of the families has built a second flooron their homeand are letting the church use thatunttheyget a building built.Wehad Jim and RhondaBowyer from World Mission Builders herein Aprfor a set up triptobuilda church building inEsperanza inNovember, Lordwilling. Asof today, however, we don t have property to bui ld a churconThere is an excellent lot for sale, just down the streefrom where the church meets now for sale for just 3500 It is in a middle-classpart of townandagrowing community. We really need your help orthis project Please let us know if your churchcould help with this important projectCUBA TRIP A GR T SUCCESSBenito Martinez and Juancito Rodrigueztravelled to Cuba for a survey trip sponsored byFAMEto explore the possibilitiesof opening a workthere. They werewell receivedby the Cuban peoplethat they met, including many Christians. The metwith several governmentofficials and learned that ifthe church was involved in benevolent programs forthe people then they could be recognized by thegovernment and meet freely as a congregation. We'r

hopingthat FAMEwill have the funding to sendoneor two couples there to get the work off the ground. We have offered some of our workers here that arewilling and eager to go. Please be praying for thisproject The team reported that there are manyshortages for the Cuban people ofmany of the basicnecessities of life, coffee, meat, tooth paste, etc. They were approachedby many doctors who statedthat despite having a very good health system inplace, medicineswere very scarcebecauseof theembargo and the disintegration of the Soviet Union, who had propped up the government for somanyyears.

4 New Churches Started in 1993The Lord continues to use H is faithfulworkers here to see new congregations started.Gregorio Grasesqui is the preacher in San Luis Moca

and has started two new churches in the Moca area,in Quebrada la Llagua and Los Ginginbres. William

Each student raised his or her own funds forthe trip and the construction funds came from thechapel offerings at the college. One the^eafest investments My U.S.church can make is to adopt one of ourDominican preachers and become his living-link church. We now have 9preachers that receive support fromchurches in t he S ta te s a nd i t is a realblessing for both sides. For $250-300 amonth your church can have a full timeworker on the field, that is ready and ableto evangelizehis own people. One ofmyresponsibilities as missionary is to serve asa liaison between th e churches and t heDominican preachers they support. I makesure that reports are translated and sent

and correspondence from the U.S. istranslated and delivered. We're activelysearching for more churches to supportsome of our workers . These men and theirfamilies are doing a tremendous job for theLord and are certainly worthy ofyourchurch's support. Please contact me ifyou're interested.New Support Needed

With the continued growth of the workhere our budget has become very strained-to put it mildly We have seen 7 newworks started this year, along with workon at least 8 church construction projects. We are seriously in need of at least $1000more support per month. That sounds litea lot of money but if iust 10 churcheswould s ta r t o r increase $100 per month.our goal would be reached. We're looking at such a busy schedulefor the next 18 months that a furlough toth e U.S looks out of reach so we'reappealing to the churches that support usnow or who perhaps have thought aboutit, to look at this work. We're convincedthat there is not a more cost-effective workin Latin America., Please give us a call at(809) 580-1930 if your church or churchgroup is interested in knowing more. We'llgladly provide you with a list of peoplethat have been here and can give you anaccurate evaluation o f the mission workLeadership Training

As many of youknow, this is a thirdworld countrj'which means that the infrastructure of thecountry isvery weak. The lights go offoften, but have improved a great deal fromwhen we first came. In September of 1991we only had electricity about 4 hours aday. The water goes offon occasion andsometimes we may have to go a day or twowith no running water but it's amazinghow easily you adapt to the smallinconveniences.

We can get most anything that we needas fa r as food and household items areconcerned. We do have our work teamsbring some things down that we can't getand if your church would like a list, let usknow
