Cause and effect

Sample Essay on When Beloved one is dying

Example of Descriptive essay, Sample Paper

“There are no mistakes, no coincidences. All events are blessings given to us to learn from”

The discovery that the person you love is dying is always a “shocking hit”. It “hits” both: the person that is dying and the person who loves him. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in her best seller “On Death and Dying” has given a deep analysis of what these two people go through after they discover the illness. It is very hard for the person that is dying to accept the idea of his future death and before accepting it he goes through five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. Patients require help in order to cope with the crisis they are facing. The same goes with the person that is about to lose a “dear-to-heart” man. According to the five stages these people need to know exactly how they can take care of themselves to make their emotional condition stable and be able to accept what is about to happen.

When Beloved one is dying Essay

Stage 1. Shock and denial. This period may last starting from couple of day to several weeks. The person finds out that their loved-one is seriously ill. As usually people at this stage avoid talking to anybody, the best “recipe” would be to start attending a support group, where the person will learn that a lot of people face the same problem and that there ways to cope with this situation. He will meet people who have gone through a situation like that and will inspire the person to concentrate of providing support to their loved ones by making their “last days” beautiful and bright.

Stage 2. Anger. The person starts experiencing anger. The main thought at this stage is “Why did it happen to him? Why did it happen to me?”. The feeling of the unfairness of the present situation makes the person mad. The best “recipe” to let the anger out is to write a journal, describing the internal feelings. Doing active exercising is a good anger-reliever remedy, too.  Another important ascent is not to be alone. Attending a support group or just talking and being honest about you feelings with family members will help a lot.

Stage 3. Depression and bargaining. This is the time when a person needs special help and emotional support. At this stage

Page 3: Writing final

the best thing to do is to ask a psychologist for a qualified help if the help of a close friend and family members is not sufficient. It is vital to take care of the organism: get enough sleep and food. Going to church in order to gather thoughts might be helpful. It is important not to let yourself to pour your emotional condition on another person. There is no need to pretend like everything is fine – it is important to be open and be active. Attending a support group may solve a lot of these problems at the same time.

Stage 4. Acceptance. This is not about denying the existence of the illness. It is about learning how to live with this “future loss” and being ready for it. Reading about the illness will help to know everything about it and be sure how to help the loved-one. Keeping a strong emotional contact with the loved-one is extremely needed due to the possibility to help him going through his stages of accepting the fact that he has the illness. The understanding that death is just a part of life is to bring the feeling of the peacefulness of the outside worlds. Spending time with nature may help a lot.

Of course it is impossible to fit all the emotions a person will experience between the lines describing these four stages. Nevertheless, a person that is facing a problem of a future “loss” needs to remember that he is not alone, that he does not have to hide his feelings, he needs to take a good care of his organism in order to help himself to cope with the situation (exercising, eating well), he may use various “creative” techniques and he may ask for help of a psychologist and a support group. And the most important part is to make the day of the dying person unforgettable by being close and “holding his hand” no matter what!

ARTICLE 2 - REVIEW

WHEN BELOVED ONE IS DYING

The author of When Beloved One is Dying tells us on how to control the emotional of

facing the lost of our beloved one. This is because it will give a ‘hit shock’ for those who

are really suffering of the lost. There are five stages stated by the author before

accepting the reality of the lost. They are through denial, anger, bargaining, depression

and acceptance.

According to her, people need to know exactly how they can take care of themselves to

get the good condition of emotional and to learn to accept the reality or what has

happened.

The first stage before accepting the lost is denial which is in this period of time, the

person will avoid her/himself from talking to anyone because they will think that it is the

b’best’ way to cope with the situation. At the same time, it is not impossible for them to

talk to somebody who are having the same situation of her/himself.

The next stage is experiencing the anger. The person will keep on asking her/himself

why did it happened to her/himself but not to other people. In my opinion, this kind of

question shows that the person still can not accept the truth and try to blame anybody.

The best way to overcome this problem is try to not to be alone and get the supports

from the family.

Thirdly is bargaining which is a time of a person need special help and support from the

other people. It does not matter from the psychologist or from the close friends or family

members and try to take care of the nature things such as sleep and food and praying.

Page 5: Writing final

The fourth stage is acceptance which is not about denying the incident but learn to live

without the loss. For those the person or partner who is still alive but suffering some

serious illness, the partner should try to be strong and be a good supporter for the sick

one by reading about the illness. It will help the loved one too. Learn to accept of the

reality of life that everybody will face the death and assume that the death is just a part

of life.

Of course it is impossible to fit all the emotions but at least the person keep on trying to

be strong to face the reality or loss and just bear on mind all the time that he/her is not

alone . The most important part is try to make the day of the dying person unforgettable

before he/she dies.

If we look at the article carefully, we can find that the topic sentence is located at the

beginning of the essay which is written “ The discovery that the person you love is dying

is always a ‘shocking hit’. This topic sentence was well supported by the next sentence

which is written ‘ It is very hard for the person that is dying to accept the idea of his

future death before accepting it.’ Some specific supporting detail were given by telling

the stages of before a person accepting the loss of beloved one. Some examples were

given such as questions and examples of activities that can be used in order to

overcome the suffer of facing the loss.

As conclusion, in my opinion, the author is a n optimistic person because she is a

person who has a positive thinking style. The author is a person who is focusing more

on the way how to handle the emotions to get a better life even thought we are facing

any loss of beloved one, to her, the life must goes on as usual and make the life happy.

And, to me, the article was written very well because it can be understood easily. This is

because the use of simple sentence structures are good for the beginner readers in

order to understand the article as well as getting the good information from the article

itself.

ARTICLE 2

Process essay of earthquake

Describe the frequency, origin and distribution of earthquakes at mid-ocean

ridges, ocean basins, subduction zones and continental shields.

Earthquakes are happening almost everyday all over the world. Most of the time

earthquakes are not strong enough to be felt by people, but the shaking caused

by an earthquake is recorded by a seismogram. These are located all over the

world at different points. Only occasionally will a larger magnitude earthquake

strike and cause damage to the region. Around the world there are many faults,

depending where these faults are plays a major factor in determining where an

earthquake will happen. It is these faults that are the reason for earthquakes. The

type of fault will also determine how often an earthquake will happen.

A mid-ocean ridge occurs under the sea at a divergent boundary. This is where

two plates are been pulled apart because of tension. This then allows new

oceanic crust to be made in the divergent boundary, as magma rises and

eventually sets on the sea floor.

If the plates on either side of the divergent boundary continue to spread then the

ocean slowly becomes larger in width, a process called seafloor spreading. Mid-

ocean ridges are characterized by a crack like valley at the divergent boundary.

This crack like valley is caused by the tension pulling the plates apart, causing

normal faulting to occur a number of times in the divergent boundary.

It is these normal faults that are the cause and therefore the origin of earthquakes

at divergent boundaries. When the tension pulling apart the two plates becomes

too much then the oceanic crust will fracture. This fracturing is caused by many

normal faults happening as shown in the diagram. The normal faults happen

because the crust is been extended. When the tension becomes too much the

faults slip vertically. They move a large distance in a relatively short space of

time, this is the cause of the earthquakes at divergent boundaries.

Page 7: Writing final

Divergent boundaries mostly occur on the sea floor and therefore the earthquakes

that happen at these boundaries are distributed along the boundary. This means

that the distributions of earthquakes at divergent boundaries are at shallow

depths, where the crust is been pulled apart. The earthquakes happen at shallow

depths because the normal faulting occurs near the sea floor, as a result of the

tension. The normal faults are the cause of the earthquakes at these divergent

boundaries.

The seafloor sees the most intense tectonic activity in the world, meaning that at

the sites of mid-ocean ridges the frequency of earthquakes is very high.

An example of a mid-ocean ridge is the Mid-Atlantic ridge, there the seafloor is

spreading at a rate of about 3cm per year. The frequency of earthquakes at a

mid-ocean ridge will depend on how much tension is happening at that point. The

more tension means the more seafloor spreading, resulting in a higher frequency

of earthquakes at a particular mid-ocean ridge.

Four major oceans make up most of the water in the world, The Atlantic (north &

south), The Pacific, The Antarctic and The Indian Ocean. Within the basins of

these oceans earthquakes can happen without been caused at Mid-ocean ridges,

or a Subduction Zones.

When the earth¡¦s crust is under tensional forces the crust will become much

thinner than normal, if there is no fault. This means that the crust becomes

weaker as it is thinner than normal. This can happen to the oceanic crust in the

ocean basins, but will only cause an earthquake with a hot spot. A hot spot is an

abnormal hot rising area of the mantle that supplies the lava for volcanoes. If at

the same time a hot spot is directly below a thinned crust then the magma in the

hot spot may hold too much pressure to be held by the thinner weakened crust. If

this is the case then the magma can penetrate the lithosphere, and eventually

erupt on the surface. The action of the magma forcing its way up can trigger

earthquakes as it breaks through the crust. When its breaks through the crust at

the sea bed eventually a volcanic island will be formed in the middle of the ocean.

Due to plate movements this can lead to the creation of mid-plate chains of

basaltic volcanic islands, e.g. Hawaii.

Page 8: Writing final

The creation of these islands around the world has happened in other places.

Frequent large earthquakes do not happen along the Hawaiian chain, it is an

essentially an asesimic ridge. Therefore the frequency of earthquakes caused in

ocean basins by hot spots is very low.

The distributions of these earthquakes that do occur happen at shallow depths.

This is because the origin is in the crust, which has been thinned because of

tension.

A subduction zone is where two plates collide and one is forced below the other,

they occur at convergent boundaries. They collide because of compression

forces, pushing them into each other. One plate is sub ducted below the other into

the mantle, where it will be recycled. An example of this is shown below with the

Pacific plate sub ducting under the Eurasian plate.

The two plates want to travel in opposite directions, they want to go straight into

each other. This causes the pressure to build up over a long period of time, as the

two plates push at each other. As time progresses one of the plates will start to be

bent downward under the other one because of the extreme force, however does

not slip, just bends. This is because of the friction between the two plates is

enough to allow them to bend, without slipping. This is a very slow but continuous

movement, maybe only a few millimetres every year. Every fraction moved by the

plates increases the build-up of elastic strain energy within the rock. The rock

continues to store this energy from a few decades to a few thousand years. An

earthquake will happen when the strain in the rocks exceeds that of the limit of

the rocks. The fault then ruptures, moving a large distance in a short space of

time. The plates then snap back into a new position, forcing the already

undercutting plate to dive down even further under the other. The collisions of two

plates generally produce large forces in the plates. These forces result in the

triggering of the earthquakes within the subduction zones.

The frequency of earthquakes in Subduction zones is about the same as that in

the mid-ocean ridges. This is because the plates cover the globe, and if they

separate in one place then in another place one-plate sinks below another. This

means that the triggering of an earthquake at a divergent boundary triggers an

Page 9: Writing final

earthquake at a convergent plate. Meaning that the frequency of earthquakes at

Subduction zones is the same as at Mid-ocean ridges, which is very high.

The earthquakes at convergent boundaries are distributed at different points. The

deep focus earthquakes occur along the already subducted plate. Shallow focus

earthquakes occur just at the point where one plate starts to be thrust under the

other. These earthquakes tend to be more common than the deeper earthquakes.

This is shown on the diagram on the left. The red dots show the distribution of

earthquakes at a convergent boundary.

Continental shields are extensively flat tectonically stable interiors of the

continents, composed of ancient rocks. Most of the stress that builds up by

tectonic movements is released in earthquakes at the plate boundaries. However

stress can also build up in the interiors of plates. Old fault lines in the plates are

weaker than the surrounding rocks, these old fault lines cover many continents,

crossing all over each other. The old faults can slip if the stress becomes too

much from recent plate movements, which will cause an unexpected earthquake.

This can be a problem as many old fault lines are not known, and many are away

from modern plate boundaries that exist today. This is potentially dangerous as

many modern settlements may be at risk from earthquakes, even though they are

not near modern day faults.

The distribution of earthquakes at continental shields is not yet known, as

scientists do not know whether these earthquakes will strike the same region

within a plate.

The strength of these inter-plate earthquakes are relatively small, compared to

boundary earthquakes. The frequency is also very small, the last major inter plate

earthquake was in Latur-India in 1993. However they can catch regions totally

unexpected because they can affect areas with no previous earthquake history.

Also the energy of the earthquake is spread out further without losing as much.

Due to the older hard rocks that transmit energy better, than the deformed broken

younger rocks. This can cause more damage to a larger region.

Earthquakes are common events and are happening all the time. They can be

caused by many different factors within the earth¡¦s interior. Depending on the

type of area that they happen in will determine the strength of the earthquake,

Page 10: Writing final

and the frequency of earthquakes within the region. The distribution of

earthquakes within an area will much depend upon

what caused the earthquake to happen in the first place. We understand today

how earthquakes are caused, and we can record where they happen every day of

the year. This has helped us to learn and understand about earthquakes in much

detail. We now only miss one important factor that we all would like to know,

when and where the next one will be. In truth it must be said that today we are still

not close to predicting earthquakes even with all the technology that is available.

ARTICLE 2 – REVIEW

The author is telling about the process of an earthquake. He explains the frequency, origin and the distribution of earthquake at mid-ocean ridges and continental shields. Earthquakes are happening almost everyday and it starts from the basis or under the sea at the divergent boundary. According to the author, many faults plays the major factor in determining where the earthquake will happen. It also related to the types of the fault too. The too plates are been pulled apart because of tension. If one of the plate spreads, then the ocean slowly becomes larger and this is a process of seafloor spreading. It will create a crack like valley at the divergent boundary and the valley actually caused by the tension from the plates apart.

When the tension becomes too much, then the oceanic crust will fracture which is caused by many faults. The earthquakes happen at shallow depths where the crust is there and as a result, normal faulting occurs near the sea floor.

Some of the scientific terms such as tectonic, faults, tension, crust, mantle, lava, magma and so many terms should be familiar with us as the readers of knowing the process of earthquakes. For example, due to plate movements, it can lead to the creation of mid-plate chains of basaltic volcanic island ( Hawaii ). Actually, frequent large earthquakes do not happen along the Hawaiian chain, but it is essentially an asesimic ridge. Therefore the hotspots is very slow.

Earthquakes process related so many stages or steps such as the movements of the plates which can lead to the fraction and produces large forces to the plates.

As the conclusion, according to the author, people nowadays can learn and know more about the earthquakes by recording the process of the earthquakes and using the technology, we can predict the earthquakes so that the readiness to face the earthquakes is there to help to do some actions towards earthquakes.

The topic sentence of this article is written at the beginning of the paragraph which is stated ‘ Earthquakes are happening almost everyday all over the world’ and it supported by some details such as ‘ Most of the time earthquake is not strong enough to be felt by people but the shaking caused by the earthquake is recorded by a seismogram.’ This supporting details would be the factors to attract the readers to read more in order to know detail about the process of earthquake.

Page 12: Writing final

To me, the paragraphs are well designed and the information are very detail and specific which are good to us to get to know about earthquake. But , the choose of words and sentences are a bit tough especially to the beginner readers because this article uses many difficult words and scientific terms. Like myself also having problems to understand the information and it allowing us to use dictionary to find the definition of some scientific terms written in the article.

But generally, I do like this article because it can give many information abut the nature incident such as earthquake which is not possible to get to know about it before this.

ARTICLE 3 ( PROCESS ESSAY )

How to Bake Cheesecake, Step by Step

The key to perfect cheesecake is in the baking. This water bath method bakes the cake very gently, so it won't darken, curdle, or crack.

A springform pan works best because you can remove the cake easily, but muffin tins or any other cake pan will work fine. If you use a plain cake pan, grease it well and line the bottom with parchment paper.

1. Preheat your oven to the temperature recommended in your cheesecake recipe. To prevent water from seeping into the removable bottom of the springform pan, wrap aluminum foil completely around the bottom and halfway up the sides of the pan. Place the cheesecake into a jellyroll pan (or any baking pan with sides) and place the pans into the oven. Use a teakettle to fill the outer pan with hot water. Cheesecakes usually bake for about 1½ hours, so check the bath after the first hour and refill if necessary.

2. Because cheesecake is very soft, it can be difficult to judge when it's done baking. One way to check for doneness is to take the cake's internal temperature with an instant-read thermometer. The ideal temperature for a cheesecake is around 160 to 165 degrees F (70 to 72 degrees C). You can also insert a small knife into the center of the cake, and if it comes out clean, the cake is done. Some bakers turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake in it for an additional hour to ensure it's completely set.

3. Once the cheesecake has been removed from the oven, it needs to chill thoroughly--preferably overnight. The cake will

Page 14: Writing final

have pulled away from the edges of the pan. Carefully run a small knife around the edge of the pan to loosen any bits that might stick to the pan.

4. Unclip the clasp at the side of the pan, watching for any areas that stick. Carefully lift the outer ring over the top of the cake. If you used a plain cake pan and don't want to serve dessert in the pan, invert a plate covered with a sheet of waxed paper over the pan. Tip the cake pan over the plate, and remove the pan. Invert a serving plate over the bottom of the cheesecake, and flip it over. Remove the top plate and paper, trying not to peel off the "skin" on the surface of the cheesecake. Any imperfections can be covered by chocolate ganache, a fruit sauce, or a layer of lightly sweetened sour cream.

5. For a seamless look, you can smooth the sides of the cheesecake with a hot, wet knife. Any toppings or garnishes can be added at this point.

ARTICLE 3 – REVIEW

This article is telling about the key word of having a perfect cheese cake which is stated that in the baking process itself. And one more thing is the type of pan such as spring form also contributes to have a good cheese cake. This is because, bath method is important to bake the cake very gently and the use of spring form pan makes us easier to remove the cake easily.

Those are some tips in baking a cheese cake. It starts with looking at the heat or temperature of the oven. And then, wrapping the pan with aluminum foil around the bottom. Then, place the cheese cake into a jelly roll pan or pan with sides. The next tip to make the bath method baking is by filling in the outer pan with hot water. Next, the author tells that bath method baking is very useful to cheese cake because cheese cake is very soft. In checking the doneness of the cheese cake is by using instant read thermometer and insert it into the internal side of the cake. Other than that, we also can insert a small knife into the center of the cake and if the cake is done, it will come out clean. Once the cake has been removed from the oven, it needs to be chilled overnight to make us easy to loosen the cake from the pan. The cheese cake can be decorated with anythings such as chocolate, fruit sauce or layer of slightly sour cream.

The topic sentence of the writing is stated in the beginning of the article ( The key to perfect cheese cake is in the baking ) then it is supported with a specific detail that is ( This water bath method bakes the cake very gently, so it won’t darken, curdle or crack.)

Generally, in my opinion, the article was written nicely and well-designed because it provides the pictures too which is good for the readers to have a better understanding towards the steps of baking a cake. In addition, the sentences used in the article are a bit easier which is can be understood even thought for the weaker readers.

Article 4 - Comparison essay

FAST FOOD VS. HOMEMADE FOODJul 18, 2011 | By Sara Ipatenco

Eating out is a luxury that many people enjoy on a regular basis. The food prepared in fast foods is convenient and tasty, but has certain drawbacks when compared to food you prepare at home. Examining the pros and cons of fast food versus homemade food will give you the information to determine what and where you want to eat.COST

Eating out regularly ends up costing more money than if you were to prepare the same foods at home. When you purchase restaurant food, you are paying for the ingredients, as well as the labor for the employees to prepare that food. MayoClinic.com notes that some foods, such as hamburgers, may end up costing similar amounts. Other foods, such as fresh salads, can save you a significant amount of money if you prepare them at home rather than paying someone else to make them for you.

FAT

Even if your homemade burger costs about the same as a fast food one, the fat content is almost always higher when you choose the restaurant sandwich. Many fast food restaurants use trans fats to cook their food, which is a dangerous type of fat that can raise your cholesterol levels and contribute to heart disease. Fast food is also high in saturated fat, which may also increase your risk of obesity and heart disease. Help Guide notes that a double Whopper with cheese, a medium order of fries and an apple pie contains more saturated fat than you should have in two days. Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients you include in your food so you end up consuming less fat.NUTRIENTS

Most of your fast food options also contain fewer vitamins and minerals than food you prepare at home. When you cook at home, you can add vegetables and other healthy ingredients to your recipes, which is not typically done at fast food restaurants. Many of your fast food options are also fried, which decreases their nutritional value significantly. The quality of the ingredients that go into your fast food meal is often lower than fresh ingredients you would use to prepare your food at home.TIPS FOR COOKING AT HOME

If you enjoy the taste of certain fast food meals, search the Internet or look through cookbooks to find recipes for those foods. You may be able to mimic the taste of your favorite fast foods at home in a much healthier, lower cost way. Get your family involved by choosing recipes and preparing your meals together. Choose the highest quality

Page 17: Writing final

ingredients you can find when preparing your recipes, and you will likely get a healthy dose of key vitamins and minerals.

ARTICLE 4 – REVIEW

This article is telling about the comparison between fast food and home made food. Some of the people like eating outside which is faster, tasty and more convenient. People normally thinking of the pros and contrasts of both of the food. There are a lot of advantages of eating outside and home made food. For example, eating out regularly more costing rather than home made food because we need to pay for the ingredients, as well as the labor for the employees to prepare that food. But, if we compare to home made food, we just need to pay for the ingredients neither nor the cost of services.

The nutritional aspect should be taken seriously too. For example, the fat content of home made food is almost lower rather than having outside food because some of the restaurants use the trans fat to cook their food which is very dangerous to us that can raise up our cholesterol levels and contribute to heart disease. Eating outside also has the percentage of lower content of vitamins because most of the food are fried and not typically done compare to home made food.

In my opinion, the topic sentence of the article can be seen in the beginning of the article which telling us that ‘Eating out is a luxury that many people enjoy on a regular basis.’ It is supported by the specific and comparison detail which telling us that ‘ The food prepared in fast food is convenient and tasty, but has certain drawback when compared to food you prepare at home.)

The choose of words and sentences are suitable for the beginner readers too because the words and sentences are a bit simple and easy to be understood by the readers.

Based on the article, I think that the author is a bit bias by stressing more on home made food . This can be seen from the comparison done by the author which are directly shown that he is bias to home made food and to me, home made food is his choice.

ASSIGNMENT 3 – ESSAY WRITING

ESSAY NO 1 (An unforgettable experience )

Upon hearing the word ‘marriage’ some would be on cloud nine. What is marriage?

Marriage is a legal union between man and woman that forms kinship. Different culture defines

marriage differently. Generally, marriage is defined as a union of two person of the opposite sex

to commit into interpersonal relationship where intimate and sexual relationships are approved.

In fact, in some culture it is mandatory to be wedded before any two people of the opposite sex

can engage into any sexual activity. This legal union is often announced to others by having a

wedding ceremony. Each culture has its own way of carrying out the wedding ceremony. In

other word, marriage is also known as wedlock or matrimony.

Marriage can involve the union of two individual of different races, age group, career,

personality etc. In our country, it is legal to be married once a person is 21 years old. Despite of

this, some prefer to marry later in life. There are some significant differences in marrying young

or later in life.

The most notable difference is between these two is breakdown of the marriage. Often

many young adults fall head over heels in love too quick. Some young adults are very immature

since they are still in the transition phase of moving from teenage phase to adult phase. In this

situation, they are yet to reach the maturity level of an adult. At this age, they are not prepared to

face the harsh reality of the world. Falling in love and marrying young force them to commit into

the reality of life. Lack of life experiences throw them into darkness where they would not be

able to handle marital problems and cope with their life. As a result, they will grow fed up and

end up divorced. Marrying young is not a bed of roses after all. Whereas, marrying later in life

would be able to secure a long lasting marriage. Often, those who intend to marry later are those

who have something to be accomplished before entering wedlock. Men normally want to make

sure he is financially stable so that he would be able to support the family as the bread winner

once he is married. On the other hand, women normally are keen on preparing herself to serve

her husband and children in the future. Women too prefer to have a stable career to support the

Page 20: Writing final

family rather than being dependent on the husband solely. The adults are mature thus are

thinking ahead of time. They are actually well prepared to enter the wedlock. Hence, often those

marrying later are better in coping with marital and family problems thus breakdown of family is

decreased.

Another different is the level of education. Those marrying young normally do not get the

opportunity to pursue their studies higher. Some young couples might even not be able to

complete their studies. They are burdened with responsibilities like household chores, child

caring, budget for groceries and paying bills. The couple is responsible in managing their own

family. In order to run the family, they have to seek for job and bid farewell to their education.

Whereas, marrying later in life secure a better education for the couple. The couple would have

completed their studies with at least a degree which promises a better career prospect. A better

career definitely promises a better salary. This mean, when the couple enter into wedlock, they

will have a secured and stable life.

Next, marrying young can be advantageous in terms of child bearing for the female.

Marrying later can be detrimental for child bearing since female loses their fertility level as they

age. The chances of getting pregnant lowers as a woman reach the age of 30. This indirectly

leads to other health problems to the woman.

Despite of all these, both marrying young or later in life expand the family kinship.

Family of both the man and women will be united as a bigger family no matter when they get

married in their life. As a whole, marriage is an institution to strengthen the family relationships.

Page 21: Writing final

ESSAY NO 2 (Choose one important event in your life, one resulting in three or more effects – changes in your living conditions, changes in your behavior or changes in your attitude.

The day which changed my whole life is still vivid in my mind. It was an important event in my

life which affected my life in many ways. It happened years ago in a month of March. On that

particular day, I woke up as early as 4.00 a.m. My eyes were wide opened staring at the ceiling

of the room. At about 6 am I get out of my bed and went to the bathroom and took my bath. Soon

after that, had my morning prayers asking for the Al-mighty’s blessing. Around 9.30 a.m, I left

home . I was on the way to my school to take my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination

result. As usual, I was riding my motorbike. Along the way, I could not stop myself from

imagining myself from getting a perfect result. Since, I was one of the top student in my school, I

was quite confident that I would get an excellent result.

As I reached the school compound, I saw many of my friends heading towards the school

hall. I saw some of my friends coming out from the hall with tears. I could just not predict the

reason. Is it tears of joy or sadness? I told myself, “I better get going in and get my result.”. I

took a deep breath and went to the hall. I queued up at the counter set by the school for the

science stream students. It was my turn. I was speechless looking at my result. I felt that my eyes

were getting heavier. I was trying not to allow my tears to flow. It was so tough. I could not stay

there any longer. I rode back home. My result was not that bad. I was disappointed with some of

the grades of the science subjects. I knew I could not obtain scholarship with this result. It is a

disgrace for me. I have disappointed my parents. I should have worked harder. Actually, I did not

complete my revision. I was too confident that I would be able to sail through since I have

always managed to do well. I failed myself.

This event changed my life especially my living condition, my behaviour and attitude.

First of all, this event is the cause of my current living condition. Although, my living condition

is not that bad, it is actually not a life I have dreamed off. Since, I could not secure a place for a

Medical Course due to my poor result; I had to shift my focus to a different field which does not

guarantee a promising living condition. Now, my salary is just an average amount any common

person will earn. This amount is just enough for me to settle my bills, getting monthly groceries,

Page 22: Writing final

children’s expenses, petrol etc. At the end of the month, I barely have any amount for my saving

Sometimes, it is just not enough to run the family till the end of the month. Hence, I have to

change my living condition. I have to sacrifice a lot. In fact, I even have to abolish the use of

television at home.

My behaviour changed drastically too. I was no longer over confident about anything. I

started changing my goals in life. I enrol myself in a teaching course. I worked hard each

semester. Some of the courses which I took were too easy. However, I did not want to repeat the

same mistake again. I worked very hard each semester. I studied very hard day and night.

My hard work was worthy. I graduated with an excellent result. I passed with distinction. I am

proud myself.

I guess that important event which happened years ago really had given me a good

lesson. It really changed my behaviour and attitude. I am a better person now. Perhaps that event

was the reason for who am I now.

ESSAY NO 4 (Write an essay of comparison and contrast on marrying young or marrying later in life.

Women too prefer to have a stable career to support the

family rather than being dependent on the husband solely. The adults are mature thus are

thinking ahead of time. They are actually well prepared to enter the wedlock. Hence, often those

Page 24: Writing final

marrying later are better in coping with marital and family problems thus breakdown of family is

ESSAY NO 5 ( Imagine that you are a travel agent and someone has asked you for suggestions for family vacation. Write an essay classifying vacations for families into three or more types.)

Nowadays, people are so busy with their hectic life style until one does not have time for

themselves. People are busy expending their wealth and forgotten that they are losing their

happiness. In many families, both parent are working and have no quality time for their children.

Often children are left by themselves with the guidance of care takers. In that case, many parents

try to make it a point to have a family vacation during the school holidays.

Many seek for suggestion from travel agents like me to plan their vacations. As a travel

agent it is my duty to suggest suitable vacation spots to my clients. Vacation for families can be

classified into three namely for relaxation, as a challenging activity and also as a form of get

together or reunion. The purpose of the vacation will indirectly determine the vacation spot.

The first type which is for relaxation is mainly for family members whom have been

working hard throughout the year. These are the people who would be looking forward for their

vacation. The best place to go for a relaxation would be cooling places like Cameron Highland.

This type of places has a suitable climate for relaxation. For example, one would not have to

participate in any fun or challenging activity to spend their time in Cameron Highland. One

could just have a visit to the tea plantation or the strawberry plantation. The hilly green

environment would definitely give a calming effect to one’s mind. Hence, one can relax their

mind without any disturbance. Indirectly, they would be able to spend their time with their

family members with a relaxed mind without thinking of their work load at the office.

The second type is vacation which includes challenging activities such as jungle trekking,

treasure hunt and many more. The most common place families look for to be involved in

challenging activities during vacation are mountains and beaches depending on the individual.

Mountains are best place for families with teenage boys. Teenage boys would love activities like

jungle trekking. Doing this activity with their other family members, will even increase their

excitement and also strengthen their family bond. The beach and the mountain are totally

different. Beaches offer challenging activities which mountains can offer. For example, activities

like beach ball. Girls prefer this activity compared to jungle trekking. In fact, some parents are

afraid to bring their daughters for jungle trekking. Besides that, people can do other activities

Page 26: Writing final

like swimming if go to the beaches. Families with young children would also be able to join their

children building sand castles by the beach. It would be a great vacation for the whole family.

Lastly, people can have a reunion or a get together type of vacation. For this, people can

go to the beach. Relations can get together and spend their time together as a whole family. They

can book chalet by the beach. At night, they can have barbecue dinner. This is a good way to

have a social gathering with family members and relations. Besides beach, can visit recreational

park. Here they can also have family activities while having fun.

Vacation is definitely a way to release stress to many. The choice of vacation spot is

totally dependent on the family type and their purpose for going on vacation.
