Verbs:
Be- am, is ,are, was, were, be, being, been, has, have, had
Linking- appear, became, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, turn
Diagramming
We have completed patterns 7 and 8
We are going to focus on patterns 2,3,4,5,9,and 10 today
We should start by focusing on the verb- be/linking or transitive
The last word in a verb phrase decides whether the entire verb is acting like an action or linking verb
Ex.We have to go to the store.
If the noun in the predicate is the same as the subject of the sentence it is a subjective compliment/ predicate noun
Ex. The giant is a large man.
Ex. The giant is the ruler.
If the adjective in the predicate is describing the subject it is a subjective compliment/predicate adjective
Ex. The lion is big.
Ex. The lion seems dangerous.
If the two nouns in the object are the same thing the second noun is usually an objective compliment
Ex. She named her brown puppy Fido.
If the adjective in the predicate is describing the direct object it is an objective compliment
Ex. The audience found the play boring.
All of these compliments are diagrammed with a slanted line (pointing back to the word they are modifying)
Identify the subject and the verb type first. If the verb is an action verb the sentence must be either pattern 9 or 10. If the verb is linking or a form of be the sentence must be either pattern 2,3,4,5.
Before diagramming the examples write the sentence pattern of the sentence and draw a
line from the compliment to the word it is complimenting.

14. The Trojans thought the giant horse a gift.
15. They found the town deserted.
16. He painted the car red.
17. The team elected the twins co-captains.
18. The explorers found the old building empty.

apartment clean
Mix/ HomeworkDirections: Write the sentence pattern of each of the following sentences on a separate sheet of paper. After identify the sentence pattern, draw a line from the compliment to the word it is complimenting. Once that is complete, diagram the sentence.
20. Her brother is a good writer.
21. The little girl looked upset.
22. The jury found him guilty.
23. Dr. Couchworthy is acting president of the university.
24. She used to be the tallest girl on the team.
25. The tiger is fierce.
