50th Anniversary Year

March 2019 Newsletter

1st Tuesday of the month from September until May

Springtime is approaching. A time to come out from the dreary days of winter into the warm sunny days of spring. I always look forward to enjoying the miracle of nature’s renewal.  The guild is busy with many activities in the coming months.

Laurie and her committee members are hard at work preparing for the 50th anniversary luncheon on May 7 at the Ormond Plantation in Destrehan. They are also working on the Children’s Art Contest/Showcase. The contest promises to be a first-class event for the children of the parish. If you are interested in any of the events, contact Laurie Abadie.

The Senior Art Activity at the Luling Council on Aging was February 27. Fun was had by all. Their work is on display at the Luling Library. We are planning a small reception at the library on Tuesday, March 12 after the meeting. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Carol Hallock workshop is near. It is currently full but Kerry has a waiting list for

possible openings. The dates are March 27 and 28. Carol is a very well-known artist

and the workshop promises to be outstanding.

Mark your calendars for the Adult Art Fair on April 9. This is very well received in the community and we always have a large participation. We are in need of several volunteers to help with setting up, helping the instructors, and taking down. There will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting. It’s always a busy but fun day for everyone.

The St. Charles Women’s Club will be having their Teacup Auction this month. This is their major fundraiser to help several organizations in the parish each year. The Women’s Club has been generous to the guild with grants to help with the cost of our activities. The guild would like to donate one or two paintings for the Women’s Club to auction. If you would like to donate a painting, please bring it to the meeting or contact Lynn Thompson and she will get it to the auction.

Remember to bring your Artist of the Month entry for the March meeting. It must be framed, or gallery wrapped canvas and ready to hang with wire. The winners will be displayed at Southern Latte Cafe in Luling and pictures placed in the newspaper.

I hope everyone had a great Mardi Gras, whether you paraded, went out of town or stayed home and watched parades on TV!Mardi Gras may be over, but our art guild is just gearing up for some wonderful Spring activities. This month, we will enjoy the long-awaited oil painting workshop given by Carol Hallock. The dates are March 27th and 28th, so if you registered, get your supplies ready. The supply list is on Carol’s website at www.carolhallock.com, click on the ‘Workshops’ tab, and then click on Supply List. Carol also has a description of what to expect when attending her workshops. Remember, the workshop will be held at the ARC of St. Charles, 13771 Old Spanish Trail, Boutte, LA. If you have questions, you can always contact me. Shortly after the workshop, we will hold our annual Adult Art Fair on April 9, 2019, from 9 AM to 3 PM, at the St. Charles Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, as usual. Ann Clement will instruct the groups in the use of watercolor paints, how to mix and blend colors, and some helpful color theory. Kerry Allen will instruct in the use of black and white charcoal pencils on toned paper to depict reflective and transparent objects. All supplies will be provided, the fee is $15, seating is limited and registration is under way. Contact me for details and to register for the art fair.

Of course, to make the Art Fair and Carol’s workshop successful, we will need some assistance. There will be a sign-up sheet for members to volunteer to help at the art fair, and to provide refreshments and snacks for both events. Please sign up at the meeting on March 12th to lend your support.

I received an email from Bill Crowell, who recently presented a wonderful demo to our guild. Bill is participating in a Mardi Gras themed exhibition at Gallery 600 Julia, 600 Julia St., New Orleans, from March 1st – 31st. If you are in New Orleans, drop by and enjoy the exhibition. Bill has several pieces in this show.

The demo artist for our March 12th meeting is Michele Benson Huck, a pottery artist from New Orleans. She will have samples of her work, and is even bringing a pottery wheel. You won’t want to miss it!

Finally, I recently began researching and studying about paint pigments. I was not well informed about the subject, and wanted to understand the differences between natural and synthetic pigments, toxicity, lightfast properties, opacity, and the overall effect of these properties on my artwork. Wow…there is a whole lot I didn’t know. Since almost all of you work with paint of some type, whether it is watercolor, acrylic or oil, you may enjoy becoming familiar with the properties of the paints you are using. I found an online Color Index database that can provide information: www.artiscreation.com/Color_index_names.There is quite a lot of information on this database, so start by looking up the colors you most often use and learning about their properties, if this is a subject you have ever been curious about.

Happy painting!

Community Outreach

1. Thanks to all our volunteers for the Senior Art Project at Luling’s Council on Aging site. We created “pulled string” paintings under the direction of Carolyn Clausing and Kay Johnson, and they are now on display at the W. Regional Library in Luling. The reception is tentatively scheduled for March 12 after our meeting.

2. I will have a sign-up sheet for the Destrehan heritage Festival which is April 30, 2019. We always need volunteers for this project because we work with so many children! Morning and evening slots are available. It is a great way to see Destrehan Plantation and help the children learn about art.
