What is Web 2.0• Phrase coined by O’Reilly Media in

2004• “refers to a perceived second

generation of web-based services—such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies—that emphasize online collaboration and sharing among users” *

• AKA the “read/write web”

Why Web 2.0

These technologies have transformed the way our students use the Internet. They are no longer just reading content on the Web, but creating, contributing, and collaborating.

RSS Feeds RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or

Real Simple Syndication Readers "subscribe" to the content

using RSS so they don’t have to visit the site itself to get the information they want.

To view the information you use an “aggregator.” The aggregator checks the sites you subscribe to, and it sends the new content to a folder so that you can read it when you want.

Eden Hall UES

M. E. Shenefiel 25

Aggregators

• A piece of software that allows you to view new information that is posted to a website.

• An aggregator could be a website designed specifically for this purpose, or a personalized homepage

• Many other programs now incorporate a feature to display rss feeds

Page 28: Web 2.0: Cool Tools For Your Classroom Eden Hall Upper Elementary School January 19, 2009 Presented by Beth Shenefiel.

Widgets• A web widget is a portable chunk of

code that can be installed and run within any separate HTML-based web page by an end user without requiring additional compilation.

• Widgets often take the form of on-screen tools (clocks, event countdowns, auction-tickers, stock market tickers, flight arrival information, daily weather etc)

Widgets

• Widgets are “embedded” into webpages.

• Many embedded widgets require a live internet connection in order to work.

• Many widgets cannot be downloaded or saved.

• Personalized homepages (i.e. pageflakes and iGoogle) are basically webpages that are embedded with many widgets
