SERVING JESUS AS ONE BODY WITH MANY GIFTS
Exactly three years ago I started serving here at Beth Eden UMC and I remember that my first “speech” was “Serving Jesus as one body with many gifts” …I think, once again, that it is time to stop and say some words in benefit of those who have been working hard. Those who, during this summer, will be busy helping our congregation to put in practice our mis-sion statement, “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”’.
It is not good for any organization to keep doing and doing without taking time to evaluate. Still more necessary it is for a Christian organiza-tion. I remember Jesus Christ asking his disciples, after he sent them to go and spread the Good News of salvation with people in their neighborhood by visiting them in their homes, talking in the street or perhaps in any given public place:
“…Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the coming of the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick… So they began their circuit of the villages, preaching the Good News and healing the sick…When the apos-tles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done…”
Luke 9: 2, 6, 10
In this small portion of the Bible, there is a lesson that we have to re-ceive. We need to come back before the Lord Jesus to present “our report”
We have to remember that on March 18, 1951 forty-five people at-tended the first service here at BEUMC and throughout all these years we have been serving our Lord Jesus’ purpose to redeem and reconcile the “whole world” by serving people in this neighborhood.
Now, if we want to evaluate our job today, we have to consider different factors:
We have to consider our history inheritance, because we are not the
Page 2
first ones that are doing an honest and permanent effort to accomplish our call. We have to begin considering how important people’s effort were when they came to this area and there wasn’t a sanctuary or a parsonage for a preacher and his family. Consider what a big challenge it was for them to start building a comfortable place that we enjoy today.
We consider other Christian groups’ effort. Because we are not alone, we are not the only ones that are trying to obey Jesus’ call, and we are not the only ones that decided to take His call seriously and to go “…and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28: 19
To “gain” new members for our congregation is a big challenge and we have to work together, beginning with the leaders’ examples. Our mis-sion is the only valid one before Jesus, is to work together as members in the same Body, in the same Family.
We have to consider all clergy and laity efforts. What we have today and what we enjoy today, is a fruit of our predecessor’s passionate job. I am always thinking in that direction when I am seated in our nice, beautiful sanctuary, when we enjoy having our meetings or Sunday school classes in the educational building. I think it is absolutely necessary to think the many leaders that have offered their time and talents, their energies, and econom-ical contributions to have what we do today. Certainly, we have to recognize them and to appreciate their efforts. We have to count the many leaders that have been building into the many kids’ minds and hearts a Christian charac-ter while they were teaching their classes or while they were leading a Sum-mer VBS.
We do need to count also the hundreds, perhaps thousand of peoples that have been serving in all the different committees for years and years, adding thousands and thousands of hours with only one goal: to be part of Jesus Christ’s Body and to serve his missionary purpose that is to redeem the whole creation.
Page 3
We have to consider that in doing our part we are not alone. Yes, once in a while I heard people murmuring or complaining because they feel that they are the only ones making big efforts to accomplish local church respon-sibilities, but we have to count the help of all other anonymous workers, most of the time behind the curtains. We forget to consider that in our Methodist tradition, we used to work together with similar plans, similar goals and most of the time, with equal strategies. We have to count the many peoples working in the same time, for similar targets throughout all our world. So, yes, we are serving God’s purpose together with hundreds, thousand and millions of Christian believers and Methodist.
In my personal evaluation, I have to accept that we are still in the pro-cess to be “Serving Jesus as one body with many gifts”. Maybe we will be always in such condition because our job is not perfect…then, let us stand, join our hands and hearts and go, because the harvest is plentiful but the workers are still few…Matthew 9: 37.
Blessings! In His Name, Pastor Mario
