Learners from Zitha Primary School, in- cluding 500 community members and dignita- ries, filled the Mafatsane Community Centre to participate in the World Wetland Month ac- tivities. Twelve-year-old Neo Mogotsi received prizes courtesy of the Rand Water Foundation awareness team after she outdid herself by an- swering most of the questions. Learners were quizzed about wetlands, where the country sources its water and how scientists detect and treat disease-inducing water organisms. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Veterinary Services Chief di- rector Dr Malcolm De Bude says, “This year’s theme is relevant and rightly calls on young people to actively participate in protecting the environment.” The community, armed with gloves and masks, defied the scorching heat and cleaned the area around the wetland. The Ekhuruleni Environmental Management MMC Vuyelwa Mabena called on the commu- nity to take care of their surroundings. She said that the community should be the eyes and ears of government and report any challenges time- ously to ensure that officials resolve problems before they escalate. Other partners included the Gauteng Wet- lands Forum (GWF). A board that makes peo- ple aware of the various species dependent on the Mafatsane wetland was unveiled on the day. It is estimated that over 35 - 60% of South Africa’s wetlands have already been destroyed through bad practices and management. Most of the pristine wetlands left in the Gauteng province are in Protected areas. Wetlands also purify water and provide habitats for many dif- ferent plants and animals. Some communities make a living by harvesting fibre to make crafts to sell. There are also medicinal plants that rely on wetlands for survival. EVATON. - Unemployed young people haveembarked on an educational system to helpkids with their homework and young deve-lopment activities. On Saturday, the `EvatonWest Cling’ - the
initiative of Wits Water Rand Drop Outs andCEPD - launched a library for the Evatonwestcommunity. This library will be the first ofits kind that consists of teachers and learnersand young development.Project manager Tholakele Mbewe says
coming up with such a brilliant project wasnot easy. But the goal was to create an educa-tive environment for the kids.“Evaton has only one library, which makes
it difficult for children to access information.Life has changed today. Children need to be
informed with much information in order toface the future,” said Mbewe during thelaunch. In the morning a five-kilometre march in
which school-uniformed learners participatedwas conducted by the Evaton Cling. Themarch was for awareness of education and itsimportance to society, said Siphiwe Hlalele.Learners were given a chance to read their
favourite books to parents just to show whatthey do at the Evaton Cling every day.Mbewe says they don’t just give children
books to read but they make sure they under-stand why they need those books and helpthem with their homework. The launch wasa great success, as parents can attest. Theywould like to see the Evaton Cling grow fur-ther into other areas.

VEREENIGING. - There were lots of laughs on GeneralHertzog Road in Three Rivers as motorists realised that thepeople standing at robots were actually boys dressed up asgirls.
This was an initiative by the Dokkie Warriors, the firsthockey team of Hoërskool Dr. Malan to raise funds for theirupcoming Hockey tournament that will take place in PortShepstone on 27 April.
The boys were seen wearing colourful clothing andmake-up to impress motorists. It seems that the plan wasexecuted to the point that motorists could not stop laughingand ended up giving the boys a donation.
Motorist Teboho Mokoena says, “This was such a goodand fun initiative. We normally come across people whojust demandmoney at the robots but this is something differ-ent. It is for a good cause. The boys were raising fundsfor a sporting activity”
Team member Corné Esterhuizen says, “We are goingto carry on with this project for the next few weeks andon March 10 we also waitered at Spur in Meyerton. “Wehope that people will come through to support us.” Ester-huizen concludes.

back yards, complains that main contractors are from outside the re-gion, objects to electricity transformers that keep tripping. Other com-plaints were that the community does not have access to the ExtendedPublic Works Programme (EPWP), that contractors take ages to com-plete roads and that Zone 7 is excluded from the integrated develop-ment programme (IDP). Sewerage pipes need attention, long grassis rampant on open space, `nyaope’ addicts are troubling the commu-nity.In her response, the mayor said it is the responsibility of everyone
to report crime, vandalism and criminals. She said 30% of the contrac-tors are indeed local. The EPWP is the responsibility of the SedibengDistrict. All the wards are included in the IDP.Most of the communityis not paying rates and services. Unemployed people must registervia their ward councillor to go on the indigence policy. Cllr Hlong-wane visited the community of Zone 7B. She advised people to regis-tere for RDP houses at the Housing Department.

Emfuleni Executive Mayor Gretha Hlongwane listened as Veleminah Maduna pointed at some of the community stands not registered for RDP houses in Zone 7B.

VEREENIGING. - Building and renovationsites could be vulnerable to theft. This is ac-cording to Clive Humphrey of ADT SecurityCentral Region.
Humphrey says it is a common for criminalsto blend in with building staff on busy con-struction sites in order to commit unnoticedcrimes.
Humphrey’s advice to contractors or ownersis to assign one person to keep track of tempo-rary or day labourers so that outsiders can im-mediately be identified.
“The full identity details of each personworking on the site must be recorded; theremust be a fence around the property and securi-ty lights at night if your building work extendsover a couple of months or longer.” Humphreyadds that contractors must also keep the siteneat so that anything out of place or missingis noticed immediately.
“Plan the delivery of building materialsclose to the time of their use so that they donot stand on site for too long. Valuable or high-cost items must be delivered only if they canbe installed on the same day and secured,” addsHumphrey.
Humphrey’s last piece of advice is that peo-ple tell their security service-provider or neigh-bourhood watch that there will be building ac-tivity at a property, making sure that site man-agers have emergency contact numbers onhand. VANDERBIJLPARK.
Twee onderwysers, Marcellus Bodenstein
en Nico de Jager, was ook teenwoordig. Indaardie vroeë jare was hulle altwee jongman-
gesmee soos in hulle skooldae en beplan omdit so ver moontlik ‘n jaarlikse instelling temaak. Hierdie was die kinders wat HoërskoolDriehoek die formidabele skool gemaak hetwat dit vandag is!
