That Baker always sings like she is try-ing to bounce her voice off the walls of a cathedral is intentional she believes in God says she has encountered the tangible manifestation of God and says that she tries to leave space for God to enter the room whenever she opens up her throat

Outreach Ministry

Books from BirthBy Philip Ramsey Rule Outreach Liaison

Books from Birth is a 2017 Grace-St Lukersquos Outreach grantee Phillip Ramsey Rule the Outreach Liaison to Books from Birth prepared the following article on the organization

The mission of Books from Birth is to promote kindergarten readiness and strengthen family bonds in Shelby County by providing age-appropriate books for all children from birth to age five

The official mission statement of Books from Birth sums up the goals of the largest affiliated partner to Dolly Partons Imagination Library foundation But I think it is just a small sample of the insurmountable force for good Books from Birth are to the families of Shelby County

After coming together in 2005 the organization set out with one goal in mind give children under the age of 5 access to books This may not seem like much a book is just a book right But this past April Books from Birth hosted a tea in Bartlett with perhaps its most well-known volunteer the 2016 Miss Tennessee Grace Burgess I think she summed up how Books from Birth contributes to the community best

As a teenager Grace babysat two kindergarten age kids and she would read books with them When she asked what book they wanted to read they told her We only have one book Grace could not fathom a home in which children did not have books It was something she took for granted in her own life reading with her parents and her sisters From then on child literacy would be her cause as both a Miss Tennessee pageant participant and as a volunteer for Books from Birth

Every month Books from Birth mails 44000 books to children across Shelby County who would otherwise not have a chance to have access to them As I look at the dozens of books on my shelf I cant imagine growing up without my Dad reading to me as a kid Books from Birth provides the gift of literacy to so many families here in Shelby County and its something that in most of our lives we consider a givenmdashreading a book You can learn more about volunteer opportunities or sponsoring a childrsquos access to books at the Books from Births website wwwbooksfrombirthorg

St Georgersquos Independent SchoolBy Katie Savage Outreach Liaison

This year the Outreach Committee was able to give $1000 to St Georgersquos Independent Schoolrsquos (SGIS) urban campus summer adventures This gift is able to provide 7 children with the opportunity to attend 4 weeks of enriching fun The full day camp offers an academic block in the morning taught by regular classroom teachers and an afternoon block of enrichment activities Each day the campers have a time for praise prayer and reflection during the daily chapel service

Summer Adventures was designed to help students stay engaged in learning activities during the summer months Studies indicate a significant learning loss over the summer when children are not engaged in learning The activities during this camp support studentsrsquo growth in reading writing math and language arts

This is our fourth year to contribute to the SGIS summer adventures camp It has been a great gift of GSLrsquos to minister to the young students of our future The Outreach Committee is grateful for your donations and we thank you for our opportunity to support organizations within our community

ldquoBut if anyone has the worlds goods and sees his brother in need yet closes his heart against him how does Gods love abide in him Little children let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truthrdquo 1 John 317-18

Thank you to Calvary Episcopal Church By Juan Fuentes

What a blessing comes from God when we collaborate to help the poor and the needy The Grace-St Lukersquos Food Pantry received a generous donation of food collected by the parishioners at Calvary to celebrate Pentecost

We are most grateful and appreciate this effort as we were also delighted to be able to collect many bags of clothing to help the Calvary menrsquos closet and the Room in the Inn

ldquoHe said also to the man who had invited him lsquoWhen you give a dinner or a banquet do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid But when you give a feast invite the poor the crippled the lame the blind and you will be blessed because they cannot repay you For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the justrsquordquo Luke 1412-14

Our thanks and gratitude to you Christine Todd and to the parishioners of Calvary for helping the GSL Food Pantry

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT One of the innovative ways that ERD and its partners are doing the work of healing a hurting world at the community level is through our savings with education program I have recently had the opportunity to visit these programs in Zambia Sri Lanka Ghana and Colombia to see firsthand the impact theyre having

COUNTRY FOCUSndashSRI LANKA Both Hands Clapping In recent decades the country of Sri Lanka has experienced both man-made and natural disasters A 25-year civil war brought decades of violence and in its aftermath hundreds of thousands

have been displaced The devastating tsunami of 2004 battered the country killing tens of thousands of Sri Lankans and leaving more than a million homeless And in 2010 major monsoons led to widespread flooding

PROGRAM FOCUSndashEarly Childhood Development in Zambia For the past five years ERDs comprehensive Early Childhood Development (ECD) program has been strengthening childrens health and development in Zambia In partnership with the Zambia Anglican Council Outreach Programmes weve developed and refined a holistic program to engage parents and other primary caregivers in vulnerable families

UPDATE REPORTndashOpening Our Hearts to Syrian Refugees ERD continues to respond to the Syrian crisis through support to agencies in Syria in Europe and the Holy Land

We can never forget nor cease to be moved by these words If its not about LOVE its not about GOD

VBS 2017 In the BooksDespite farewells to a beloved priest scheduling challenges technical difficulties and a week-long power outage leading up to the big week VBS came together beautifully and a great time was had by all It turns out this yearrsquos theme was a fitting one Jesus and His Miracles

49 children spent their mornings learning about five of the amazing things Jesus did to show Godrsquos power and love to the world ndash changing water into wine giving sight to Bartimaeus the miraculous catch of fish walking on water and healing the ten lepers Through music scavenger hunts crafts skits and even snacks VBS kids explored each of these stories and took home

the lesson that Godrsquos love for us overcomes even the biggest of challenges and makes impossible things possible

We are so thankful for the many friends who helped make this yearrsquos VBS a success It truly does take a village to put on an event like this and our village at GSL always answers the call From the sign-in table snack prep and clean up to childrenrsquos group leaders crafts skits and recreation 9 parishioners 17 church staff members and 18 high school volunteers played a part in this yearrsquos program We appreciate each one and look forward to another wonderful week next year

Letter from Bishop Johnson to the Diocese of West TennesseeDear Friends

I met with the Standing Committee of the Diocese today to inform them of my plan to continue God willing to serve as Bishop Diocesan of West Tennessee into 2019 I have been in contact with the Presiding Bishop to ask him to set the date of the ordination of my successor in accordance with his timeframe

The Standing Committee will now begin to take the required canonical steps to lead the Diocese through the nomination and election process By Canon I am required to fully delegate this responsibility to the Standing Committee I trust that their work will lead to a smooth transition of leadership and I invite you to join with me in praying for them the Diocese and all who will be engaged in this process The Standing Committee will be in touch with you to provide information about their work in the weeks ahead

For over forty years Jeannie and I have invested our lives and that of our family in ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church We have served in various places and capacities and this continues to be our privilege Sixteen of these years have been as Bishop of West Tennessee and we cherish this time and the relationships it has allowed us to deepen and share with you Jeannie and I invite you to join us in continuing together the love work and commitment we joyfully share in Christs service in this part of Gods vineyard

God willing is the customary and insightful caveat attached to any announcement regarding Gods working in our lives beyond this present moment So it is today We will have the time to speak freely of our common hopes for the future and of the thanks-giving we continue to share as we move ahead in ministry and witness to Gods love in this present time For now let us remem-ber the words of the Psalmist who proclaims This is the day that the Lord has made Let us rejoice and be glad in it Then God willing let us look forward to the next great adventure God has in mind for West Tennessee Surely it will be good news

Blessings with a promise of more to comeThe Rt Rev Don E Johnson Copies of Letter from the Standing Committee at info center in church hallway

Christian Education

Christian Education
