They are the sixth genera-tion to farm raising alpacas since 2005. Their farm is currently home to 20 alpacas and Red, the cat and located in Northern New York close to Route 81. They take great pride in the care of our animals and welcome the opportunity to educate any who would like to know more about these curious, gentle, intelligent and entertain-ing creatures. After be-ing away from the North Country for 34 years living the last 30 in central NJ they had a desire to return to our roots. All of the hustle and bustle seemed to lose its appeal espe-cially after Sept. 11, 2001, Daryl, actually watched the second plane hit the tower from his Jersey City office on that fateful day. Short from saying, “We’re out of here!”. They started to develop a plan so that we could return to upstate NY and grow the farm that Gail grew up on. After reading an article about an alpaca farm near us in New Jersey, they visited Tuccillo farm and soon became involved learning all about the care and nurturing of

these magnificent crea-tures. They cleaned the poop piles, learned to give shots, and watched with awe as their first cria was born. They were in love and ready to start our own farm. They bought their foundation herd from this farm and brought them to New York. They have learned a lot and are excit-ed to share our knowledge with other future alpaca farms as we develop this farm. Visitors are warmly welcomed to their farm and offer tours and a farm store. They now host a lo-cal 4H club, “Fiber of Life” and have an annual open house complete with ice cream eating contest.

Stay-cation is a buzzword that has become more prevalent with today’s economy! However, from my perspective that is not necessarily a nega-tive thing since we live in one of the most beauti-ful, scenic, and historic areas!

If you were planning to drive for your vacation, you felt it at the pump. If you were planning to fly, you most certainly felt it either in air fares or reduced schedules. With the ever growing high prices of gas (and everything it effects), people are opting to find

things to do in their own hometowns. But the true stay-cation is more than that. It means becoming a tourist in or near your own home. However, experts warn that with today’s technology you run the risk of never truly getting away from the office if you are still daily checking email at home and carrying your Smart-phone.

The Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce has been collaborating with the ar-eas local tourism council and attractions to learn even more about the hidden treasures in our own backyard! As a local business here are some tips to attract the locals to your business:

Work with your key

hotels. Hotels that focus on business travel during the week often look for ways to fill rooms over the weekend. Partner with them to create an “Experience Your City Like a Tourist” package which would include your shopping and dining incentives.

Partner with your attrac-tions to include tickets. Some attractions will run off-season promotions where they will offer dis-counted tickets to locals. Promote one another!

When you develop a package, tie in specific merchants who will offer a complimentary cocktail or dessert with the pur-chase of an entrée.

Include luxury items such as a personal shopper

and limo service to and from the hotel.

Remember, we all need a break from time to time, whether we get to take a trip and an actual vaca-tion or not, but finding that relaxation and rest we need every day! If you need some ideas, stop by the Chamber of Commerce and we can help plan your STA-Vaca-tion!

The System for Award Man-agement (SAM) is combining eight federal procurement systems and the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance into one new system.

This first phase of SAM will include the capabilities of Central Contractor Registra-tion (CCR)/Federal Agency Registration (FedReg),

Online Representa-

tions and Certifications Application (ORCA), and the Excluded Parties List System (EPLS). In preparation for the launch, GSA conducted ex-tensive testing internally and in coordination with federal agencies using the data from these systems in their own contracting, grants, finance, and other departments.

SAM will reduce the burden

on those seeking to do busi-ness with the government. Vendors will be able to log into one system to manage their entity information in one record, with one expi-ration date, through one streamlined business pro-cess. Federal agencies will be able to look in one place for entity pre-award infor-mation. Everyone will have fewer passwords to remem-

ber and see the benefits of data reuse as information is entered into SAM once and reused throughout the system.

Jefferson Community Col-lege: Jefferson Community College and SUNY Cobleskill signed a memorandum of understanding to offer a bachelor of science degree in early childhood studies on the JCC campus. The degree will specialize in children from birth to age 5.

Jefferson Community College is making it easier for volun-teer and paid firefighters to

get specialized training.Starting this fall, the college will offer a certificate in fire protection technology for firefighters who do not have time for the two-year associ-ate of applied science degree. Required courses are basic firefighting, hydraulics and wa-ter supplies, fire behavior and building construction for fire protection. With these classes in addition to electives such as fire administration and oc-cupational health and safety, a student can take a state an international exam without any additional training.

River Hospital: Fort Drum soldiers may receive additional care for post-traumatic stress disorder closer to post with the announcement of in-creased services at River Hos-pital that could begin in the

next few months.The hospital will offer a partial hospitaliza-tion program for active-duty military, in partnership with Holliswood Hospital, which offers inpatient mental health care at its Queens facility. Holliswood Hospital will sup-ply River Hospital with clinical and administrative assistance, quality control and assistance in recruiting and hiring, and will serve as project manage-ment consultant.

Roswell P. Flower Memo-rial Library: Roswell P. Flower Memorial Library is ready to roll out a redesigned website in a few months. Included will be a virtual tour of the build-ing. The video showcases the building’s high ceilings, art-work and rows of books. It will be available on the library’s website by the end of summer after the staff is trained on how to use it. Northern Regional Center for Independent Living: Brenda S. Campany’s nearly 15-year career at the Northern Regional Center for Inde-pendent Living will end Sept. 30, when she retires from the agency. Mrs. Campany’s departure falls in line with the agency’s independent living grant award through the state Education Department.

Northern New York Commu-nity Foundation: The North-ern New York Community Foundation board approved a $200,000 grant to the Ur-

ban Mission, 247 Factory St. The campaign would seek to eliminate the agency’s debt, repair the building and create an endowment. The founda-tion’s board also approved the following grants for area agencies:• $25,000 to the North Country Arts Council to help fund the group’s “Screen on the Square” project to provide a multipurpose venue for films, lectures, recitals and other presentations. This grant was made possible, in part, through the Herring College Memorial Trust.• $10,000 to the Jefferson Community College Foun-dation, Watertown, toward a fundraising partnership to conduct a feasibility study for a proposed multipurpose facility.• $10,000 to the Victims As-sistance Center of Jefferson County, Watertown, toward the construction of a new residential shelter.• $4,000 to the Watertown Family Y in startup funds for the youth life skills/employ-ment program.• $3,500 to the Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, for tree-planting efforts as part of the 100th anniversary commemo-ration, “100 Girls, 100 Trees, Celebrating 100 years.”This grant was made possible by the Carolyn Whitney Fund.

Services grant that will fund the expansion of clinic operations, including the opening of a site in Lewis County.The grant will allow the clinic’s site at 238 Ar-senal St., Watertown, and the future Lewis County location to become federally qualified health centers. Already serving children’s medical, dental and mental health needs, the clinic also will care for adults, regard-
