New perspectives during medical education and trainings in ultrasound handling are possible thanks to Sonofit’s simulator.

It offers interactive ultrasound trainings in real-time including tutorials, feedback functions and also supports to develop awareness for pathologies. All of it can be done during a class-room training or alone. This kind of flexibility is possible solely with Sonofit’s ultrasound simulator.

The high quality 3D ultrasound volume can simultaneously be presented with CT or MRT images. This is globally a unique feature for an ultrasound simulator. Both data

sets are comparable with the ultrasound picture. Expert knowledge from the database on displayed images can be called at the push of a button to support autodidactic learning.

Sonofit’s simulator contains almost 1’000 real, but anonymous patient records, documented and explained by medical and engineering staff alike. Many of them resemble hospital files including additional information such as diagnostic pictures and results of examinations as well as from laboratories. These pathologies are assembled and sorted by medical areas (modules) in the library (database). The trainings are conducted on mannequins with different “ultrasound probes”.

Sonofit GmbH is a subsidiary of MedCom GmbH in Darmstadt. MedCom itself is a spin-off of the world‘s leading institute for applied research in Visual Computing, the Fraunhofer Institute IGD, based in Darmstadt. Sonofit develops and markets interactive ultrasound simulators “made in Germany” for applied trainings of medical staff.

Founded in 2000, Sonofit presented its first real-time ultrasound simulator in Germany in 2001. All functionalities and control elements corresponded to a conventional ultrasound system. From 2007 onwards, the simulator could also be used within almost all ultrasound faculties, including the usage of a dynamic colour Doppler and freehand punctures, performed with a real needle.

Authentic pathologies of real patients are virtually loaded into the patient mannequin. They deliver a genuine training experience. If necessary, additional guiding systems empower the students to a full interactive and independent training. The different imaging technologies, shown on a split screen, enable the students to compare ultrasound images simultaneously with CT or MRT. This is globally a unique feature for an ultrasound simulator.
